Thanks for the idea, Brandon. I hadn't even considered the
possibility that the RAM is bad. This machine has run well for weeks
and even months at a time with regular use, though, so I'm not sure
what to think.... That led me to believe it might be the kernel
itself.

I too encountered this problem. It all stems from the fact that
the KVM switch somehow mangles the Intellimouse data stream in a way
that the linux drivers wont deal with while windows for some reason
has NO problems with. The answer is to change your mouse type to PS/2
instead of IMPS/2 in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file in the mouse section.
You must also tell gpm that you have a mouse type of PS/2 not IMPS/2.
It incidentaly disables the operation of the wheel too. I am still looking
into this one. For now I just bypass the kvm with my mouse and have 2 mice.
One for each box.

Its possible, but in my case, it doesn't seem to make a lot of
difference. The diagnosis in my case is based on 50 years of looking at
it, smelling it, and in some cases feeling it, almost anything
electronic. When I see what looks like a loss of hscan power in the
middle of a vertical scan, and it comes back to normal hsize 1/4" down
the tube on the same vertical scan, thats got to be an arcing connection
in the hscan. Having looked it over, and resoldered any and all
connections around it that even look suspicious, leaving only a bank of
smallish relays near the front of the pcb that are the preset switchers
in this monitor, thats all thats left. Ergo, thats (until proved
otherwise) it.
Most modern monitors have a group of 'preset' memories, so that once
their stored with the current settings according to the scan mode its
running in, a mode change simply calls up the settings for that scan
rate. In my case, the switching is done by relays.
I'm like you, I wish it would quit for good, then I could fix it.
Cheers, Gene

Almost any Slot 1 Dual motherboard should work provided you use the
appropriate dual capable slotkets such as I-Will or MSI. (unless you want
to mod some non dual capable slotkets). A current favorite a later revision
Tyan Tiger 100 based on the BX chipset.

You need something like lm_sensors for the kernel drivers and
optionally a gui program lime gnomesensors or wmsensors for a pretty
looking interface. I happen to have a Abit BH6 motherboard also and
know that the above worked on it although I haven't really used those
programs for a while now.

I got a Conner 1.7GB QIC tape drive (uses $30 QIC 3020 tapes) on a
dedicated CTC-2MB floppy tape controller. It works pretty well on my old
machine, but the tapes are too expensive and do not hold enough
(850MB uncompressed (normal mode) and 1.7GB compressed (but current
floppy tape drivers do not write compressed mode any more). It is kind-of
slow.
On this machine, I have an HP C1599A DDS-2 SCSI DAT Drive. It is on a
dedicated LSILogic Symbios 810 Narrow SCSI controller (i.e., no big
deal). It holds about 8GB on a cheap DDS-2 tape (about $8.00) and is a
lot faster than floppy tapes. The drive is about $800 retail, but you may
be able to find a better price.

I have installed Linux Red HAt 6.2 Toshiba Satellite 4100XDVD laptop. I
wish to use Xircom Realport 10/100 CE3 card. From reading David Hinds
PCMCIA-Howto it suggests card is compatible with Linux. I have loaded
xirc2ps_cs module, and this module appears when I type in lsmod. When I
type in cardctl ident it identifies card. however when I insert or remove
card it gives a high beep then a low beep which I believe indicates card is
not configured properly.
The problem I have is when I use the Kernel Daemon Configuration from teh
ControlPanel it asks me to select type and module. I select type as "eth",
but when I go to select module there appears to be no driver for xircom
card. Does anyone know what name of module should be, and whether I need
to copy anything into lib/modules/2.2.14-12/net/ directory. I am relatively
new to Linux so fairly simple instructions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

I have the same CPU with Asus P5A motherboard. Do you know what is the
temperature reading of your CPU and motherboard?
If I keep my machine running full load for a while and reboot (check the
BIOS), the temp of my CPU is about 58~61 C... I know it's quite high.
However, my machine is running very smooth.
I have install the lm_sensor. The temp reading is about 10 C less then
the BIOS reading. My kernel version is 2.2.14-50...
Just a side note, I have three case fans running... And, I am still think
about getting a *really* good CPU fan.
I leave my machine on 24 hours a day and run setiathome and some other
stuff... It seems to be ok.
Alex.

Subject: confused which Adaptec SCSI card works with Red Hat Linux
Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 08:31:51 GMT
Can anyone tell me which Adaptec SCSI card for PCI slot works with Red Hat
Linux 6.2 as I'm building an all SCSI based system for the first time & have
been researching this project for the last 4 months in every spare moment of
time I have. I've been to Red Hat's Hardware Compatibility List & Adaptec's
Knowledge Base which refers back to Red Hat and it's getting more confusing
all the time. I compare specific model numbers given by Red Hat to those
currently being sold at Adaptec and there's 3 different AHA 2940uw and
what's the difference between the 3 SCSI 2940uw cards or are these the same.
I just want my Linux install to go as smooth as it can without wasting a few
hundred dollars on hardware not supported & hours of precious time. If
anyone happens to know which Linux driver goes with the specific card
suggested, please let me know. I'm wanting to use a Plextor SCSI Internal
CD-RW and either two 10 GB IBM UltraStar or Seagate Cheetah 10K rpm hard
disk drives. I know very little about Linux even though I've programmed in
PERL.

Lots of money.
The DVDRAM drive is expensive, but apparently so are the blank DVDs.
Last I heard the blank DVDs were worth more than a new release original
movie DVD.
Is this still true ?
