Note: I'm not a linux guru, things that seem obvious to you may not be to me.
Here's the problem. I need onboard sound for what I am doing so I tested Linux
on an Amptron MB with a "Sound Pro" chip. Sndconfig detects the bastard as
that cs4232 or whatever (the "common onboard chip), but then I can't hear any
output when its testing the sound. So I manually configured the Sound Blaster
16 setting. I get a short blip when its playing the test sound, but nothing
with the midi. So I go back and set up the csXXXX with the correct IRQ's and
DMA's and I hear Linus, but it is totally distorted and no midi plays.
Suprisinly enough mpg123 plays mp3s fine with this set up. Unfortunately after
a reboot I have to do the same process all over again to get the sound to work.
Is there any easy fix for this or is there a way to load up the SB16, uninstall
the module and load the csXXXX module, all at boot time?
Thanks,
Tom H.

HAHA, i just propped mine up with a peice of plastic, it was the original
Maxtor so I figured it didn't really matter if it were grounded or not.

'Taint the card that determines the interrupt request on PCI slots.

When your computer is in it's memory count stage, hit whatever key or
combonation that brings up your BIOS configuration and look around in
the "Advanced Configuration" or "Adaptor Configuration" or whatever it's
called in yours.

You'll see one of the options of "PCI slots use xxxx"

The options there will probably be 'automatic' and 'manual'. If you get
them to manual, you'll be able to set the slot you're looking for to IRQ
5.

I have an SBPCI64 that I only got to work when I upgraded
the kernel from 2.0.34 to 2.2.5-15 (RH 5.1 -> 6.0).  I'm not sure if
the 64 and the 128 have similar chips, but the module I successfully
used was the es1370 module. I think this module or the es1371
should get you going.

Rings a bell but perhaps not loud enough. Might be redhat APX (alpha CPU) I'm
thinking of.

A cheap solution that I use is a data switch box like the old printer
switchers. I have one to switch between 4 computers, monitor/keyboard/mouse.
One win98 and 3 linux boxes.I paid about $25-30 I think. You could even modify
an old printer switch I would think.

Some keyboards and mice have troubles with this but it works for occational
use. I've had the mouse lock up in windows often but I use a USB mouse also. I
have had both key and mouse lock up sometimes when I shut a box off with the
switch set to it. Other than that it works fine.

check your BIOS to disable boot time errors. On the subject of BIOS, there are
serial versions of some of the BIOS's. What I mean is the setup is accessed
thru the serial port as well as console. You may want to contact your BIOS mfg
about that. That would be an expensive option most likely but rather handy.

My Gnome sound effects work (sliding bar swish, etc), but
I cannot play MP3s or use xplay to play .au files. When
I try xplay, it complains:

/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy

Any reason? My sound card is correctly compiled in, and
like I mentioned the Gnome effects work great. Is this
a hardware conflict or something fishy with esd?

Running RedHat 6.0, E, Gnome.

The folks who did lzop have done a software which allows execution of
compressed executables. I think this might be useful, since the memory
saving from having all the executables compressed should be
considerable.

You could use a drive caddy to remove the drive so it doesn't get cooked. It
will be more vulnerable to damage from dropping than tape tho. Drive caddies
I've seen as cheap as $25. I wouldn't use them long term in a caddy tho as the
cheap ones tend to trap heat. They are also not really hot swappable but some
do disable power as you unlock them for removal and I'ld look for that feature
when shopping.

Gene Heskett sends Greetings to Martin ;

The IDE version works quite well. I've been using mine on the linux box
since HR5.2. Support *may* depend on your bios, if its not seen in the
early bootup screen before lilo even starts, the chipset may not support
it on *your* board. Thats a good excuse to go looking for a bios
upgrade.

I've no knowledge about any parport versions of it however.

Subject: HELP!!! Compaq Netflex 3/p card
Date: 17 Jun 1999 00:30:52 GMT

Hello,
I'm trying to install a network card Compaq NETFLEX 3/P(tlan.o module) and
here is what I got:

1.ifconfig output:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:5F:D4:6F:84
          inet addr:192.168.0.3 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:17 Base address:0xf4f0

2. console output:

Jun 14 19:48:45 linux1 kernel: TLAN driver, v1.0, (C) 1997-8 Caldera, Inc.
Jun 14 19:48:45 linux1 kernel: TLAN: eth0 irq=17 io=f4f0, Compaq
NetFlex-3/P, Rev. 16
Jun 14 19:49:02 linux1 kernel: TLAN: eth0: Link forced.

2. message when I'm trying to use "insmod tlan irq=5 io=0xf4f0
speed=10Mbs"

/lib/modules/2.2.9/net/tlan.o: invalid parameter parm_irq
/lib/modules/2.2.9/net/tlan.o: invalid parameter parm_io
/lib/modules/2.2.9/net/tlan.o: invalid parameter parm_speed

As you can see the IRQ detected is 17.....!!!! I know(with a DOS program)
that the card is on 5 ...

I did tried kernel 2.2.6,7,8,9 with Caldera 2.2 and SUSE 6.1.
I tried to put as a parameter in conf.modules:
 "alias eth0 tlan
options tlan io=0xf4f0 irq=5"
and I got the same message: "invalid parameter parm_irq" etc...

What's strange is that after I load the module..with that strange IRQ...I
have conectivity for about 2-3 min...and then nothing...it's really weird.
I've changed 3 cards, I've changed the slot on the mainboard,I've enable
and
disable PNP in BIOS..I did everything!!!

So how can I force to use that IRQ(5)? Or am I doing something wrong here?

They are the same function. vremap() was renamed to ioremap()
sometime in the 2.1.x kernels (I think). So, 2.2 kernel users will
see ioremap() 2.0 kernel users will see vremap(). The text file you
described is in kernel 2.2, and shows how to deal with backward
compatible modules (just a simple #ifdef).

Thanks for the responses. I'd like to use something that doesn't
generate a lot of noise though. The AWE64 was quieter than it's
predecessors but still not as quiet as something like the Diamond
Monster series or the TB Montego & Montego II cards. Does there exist
any support for DSP-based soundcards in Linux?

I works just fine with FAT32 and win98. If I remember it even survived an
upgrade from win95. You may also want to set up loadlin just in case.
Also keep a boot disk on hand. There are many windoze viri that will
destroy the boot block and any lilo info. After you clean the windoze
partitions and sys the boot block with a win boot disk you'll need to boot
a linux disk and run lilo again using the lilo.conf on your linux
partition. Does it sound like I have experienced this?
