The most likely problem is lack of memory - I think the docs suggest
16M is needed, although you should get away with 8M.

Unless you've a good reason for using SW7.0, I'd go with an older
distribution. Try a libc5/2.0.x setup and it will seem a lot faster.
If you need a 2.2 kernel then consider SW4.0.

Hi!
I'm in trouble trying to manage the sound settings on isapnp.conf for
this Crystal sound chipset embedded in my Intel SE440BX motherboard.
I also have Win98 in the same machine, and even there I had problems,
because it has incompatibility issues with my modem, a common Motorola
VoiceSurf 56k.
I did put them to work on Windows, but the settings I got from the
system properties won't work with Linux.
I also have tried to put the BIOS to "non PnP aware OS", but this messed
a lot with Windows and also did not help anything in Linux.
Now I have my modem working with different settings (IRQ9 on Win and
IRQ5 or 6 or 7 in Linux) but no sound.
Thanks

Thomas,

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. My audio cd player isn't working either in
RedHat 6.1. Like yours, it comes up and says "no disk". The player itself
is working fine, as I'm listening to it now in Windows 98. The sound card
is a plain-jane SB16 PCI. It configured in RedHat straightaway, and even
played the Linus Torvalds sound clip at the end of the configuration. The
other pressing issue I had was with a Linksys LNE100TX ethernet card, but I
finally got that puppy working after I downloaded a newer version of the
Tulip driver from Linksys's website.

In my case, the computer is an Athlon 600 mhz with a Gigabyte 71-X
motherboard and 256 megs of RAM.

Any hints anyone would have on getting the audio CD players working would be
appreciated.

Cheers,

Bob Dwiggins

I don't know *how* it could happen, but I know the problem. I made a CD
(not a 1:1 copy, just files from the HDD) on my Creative 2224 (IDE)
writer (under Win98 though), and that same drive reported the CD as
empty afterwards. When I started up the CD writing software again, it
said there was an open session on the disk that had to be closed, tried
to close it and failed. A 6x Creative IDE drive, on the other hand, read
the CD just fine. But the 24x drive in my father's Compaq 1230 laptop
didn't. I eventually gave it up. None of the other CDs in that pack
worked at all, except one onto which I could burn some audio.

Also, it depends on the distribution you have. I got into Linux a month
and a half ago, with SuSE 6.3. It came with 6 CDs and a 550 page manual.
Sadly, the graphical setup tool didn't work on my PC, but I got X (with
KDE), my SB16 and my ISDN card working within just one weekend. The
manual describes all the basics and first steps quite nicely, with
step-by-step instructions for the important stuff like graphics (X) and
internet access, and the system comes with the very convenient Open
Sound System for sound support.

I don't quite agree. It would be a lot easier for developers and users
if there was one unified OS, for example everyone running Unix-type
systems. Then they wouldn't have to write, for example, one version of
their network card's driver for Win users who want to play multiplayer
games and one for Unix administrators who want to configure a server,
but just the Unix version for everyone. Also, I use my computer for
Internet access, games and general experimenting - no programming yet
:-( - and I'd like to do it all under Linux, and not boot into Win98
every time I want to play a game. And that's just the advantage of Linux
- not that it's a stable, reliable, powerful system for server
applications, but that it's so flexible. It's already like that with a
lot of current distributions - ordinary mortals use an easy, comfortable
graphical setup to get a standard system running smoothly, and if you
want you can use a text-based setup utility that gives you a lot more
options.

What model is your Pavilion... is it a new one? I have a Pavilion 8565C,
and had no problem installing RH 6.0 on it (haven't tried 6.1). But mine
(and I thought all the 8xxx series) has Riva Nvidia TNT video, which was
recognized during setup and works fine with X (I'm running X 4.0 right
now, but 3.3.5 worked just as well).

Also, the ethernet card was recognized, and works fine using the realtek
driver. The funky Riptide winmodem/sound combo is not supported, of
course, and probably never will be. I put my old USR 56K modem in the
one ISA slot, and picked up an el-cheapo Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI for
$25, which is adequate for my needs. BTW, the 8565C is based on the VIA
chipset. I recompiled my kernel 2.2.14 to support it.

I bought my Pavilion because I needed a computer immediately, and it was
the only one at Staples with 128M RAM and a big HD (20G). I had my
doubts, but it's really turned out to be a decent linux box.

In my case, the software modem in my Compaq 1200-XL106 was easy to
configure under Mandrake 7.0. I just ran the setup script from the zip
file I got. That script installed the driver (which griped about a
mis-matched kernel version but still worked) and set up the device files
-- /dev/ttyS14, I believe (I'm not typing this from the same computer, so
I can't check it quickly). I don't recall if the script set up a link from
/dev/ttyS14 to /dev/modem. The initialization strings I used by default in
X-ISP seemed to give the modem some fits, but KPPP worked better (I did
have to remove the volume-setting commands, though).

My main concern with this modem is that the driver doesn't work with the
2.3.x development kernels. As the driver is *NOT* open source, that means
it might be impossible to get working with the 2.4.x kernels when they're
released, if Lucent loses interest in supporting the thing under Linux.
With any luck, though, the open source project for developing Lucent
drivers will have gotten something a little more usable than they've now
got. (From the descriptions, the open source driver works, but runs as a
user level program requiring root access, so it's really not a driver at
this point.)

For more details, check the Linux software modem web site,
http://www.linmodems.org. I've written up my experiences with the Compaq,
including its modem, at http://www.rodsbooks.com/presario/.

Hi all,

I have a 550 MHz Athlon on a K7M mobo, running RH6.1. The system seems a
bit flaky. Compilations tend to die from random 'Signal 11', and long,
floating-point intensive calculations sometimes hang the machine to the
extent that I have to switch it off. Does anybody have similar
experiences? What does 'Signal 11' mean?

There seems to be some traffic in the linux newsgroups about this mobo,
but it all sounds rather vague. I downloaded a (Windows) memory test
program from somewhere on the web, and it reports no errors.

I tried to recompile the kernel, with MTRR disabled and the processor
set to P5. Not sure if it was successful. Does the following do the job:

make xconfig
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make install

RedHat has several files lying around that look like kernels
(vmlinux-2.2.12-20, vmlinuz-2.2.12-20, vmlinux-2.2.12-20BOOT, ...). How
can I find out which one it is actually using? I don't see any
difference in behaviour after the recompile.

Thanks in advance for any help,

  Herbert

Depends on which IDE interface the drive is attached to. Probably the
2nd, as you usually want the hard drives on the first one... So, try:

# mkdir /mnt/cdrom2
and then edit /etc/fstab to include the line:

/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0

After that, you should be able to mount CDs by just typing "mount
/mnt/cdrom2". Why 2 CD-ROMs, anyway? I can see a CD-ROM and a CD-RW, but
having 2 CD-ROMs seems like a waste for most applications. Ah well. HTH,

Read the messages at boot or search them later with the command "dmesg".
Search for line which says something about psaux and/or
irq 12.

Did you try that? Did it help? However, if you are a newbie it might be
hard to compile and install a custom kernel.

What kind of messages do you get when the modules are loaded at boot?
Does it say anything about ttyS* and uart or psaux?

Are you sure that you are using a 32 bit color depth? Check with
xdpyinfo! If xdpyinfo only lists screens with depths of 8 bits you will
have to force X to use more colors. This can be done with startx like
this:

startx -- -bpp 16

Or by modifying XF86Config, add

     DefaultColorDepth 16

To the "Screen" section of your XF86Config.

When you get "L 01 01 01..." the "01" is an error code from the bios
which means 'invalid command'. In this case it's because the bios can
not access above cylinder 1024 (~8gb). You can boot with a floppy until
you get the problem fixed.
Solutions:
(1) re-organize the partitions to get at least one partition completely
below cyl 1024 for linux (or just the /boot directory of linux).
(2) If you can't repartition, you could use the nuni boot loader. nuni
does not use the bios, so it can boot linux from any location up to
137gb on any IDE drive (hda-hdk). Find nuni by searching on
freshmeat.net.

The 'fdisk /mbr' command is used with the dos/windows fdisk. Of course
you need an msdos floppy that has fdisk on it. The installation boot
floppy for win98 should work.

bios. PC's have a very archaic bios due to the fact that it remains
adequate for the singular task of booting windows from hda1. One could
also say that lilo is at fault for depending on the bios.

I can get gnome running through the following trick;

xinit
typing exec gnome-session into the command window

If anyone knows a better way... I'd be happy to hear it.

TJ

PS. I also have the color corruption bug
PPS. I'm running SMP RH6.1 on a Tyan Thunder DLUA1696.

Another alternative is to get a video card with hardware assist, while it
hasn't made it into any software that I'm aware of for Linux, the Rage 128
does have the support and the API is available...

Hi.
I think this doesn't help you much, but I have a bt848 with MSP3400
decoder. This one doesn't work neither. The chip isn't even detected...

Hi!
I just read on Linuxgames.com that nVidia is releasing their OpenGL

That's about time :-)

Hi.
Creative is now using a new chip on their SB PCI128 boards (something like a
ES1373 or so). That isn't supported yet. I suggest that you swap the board for
a 1370 one.
