Currently PCI Cards can *share* the same IRQ, using masks.
My RH 5.2 use Ethernet and Video with the same IRQ 12.

Hi,
I have a Shuttle Technology PCMCIA HDD of 2 GB(4 partitions).
After configuring card services, my linux (RH6.0, 2.2.9) sees it as
"hdl". I have no devices listed as such, so have used mknod to create
it. But when I try to mount the device, it says that hdl is not
recognised as a block device. Anyone has any ideas, especially on the
major and minor numbers required for mknod, or any suggestions most
appreciated.
Thanks.

Subject: Re: Floppies for installing?

Here's what to do:
Get a FTP client such as cuteFTP or FTP voyager and go to ftp.redhat.com.
Download the entire I386 directory to your hard disk somewhere (make sure
that you duplicate the directory structure on the FTP site.) This can take
a very long time as there are about 600Mb worth of stuff to download. Once
you have downloaded all the files, run autoboot.bat from the /dosutils
subdirectory. You must be in dos mode for this to work properly. This
should start the install. You will be asked to give the partition where the
files you downloaded are located (something like /dev/hda2/i386)
Another easier option: go to www.cheapbytes.com and order the distribution
you want and you should receive your CDs in about a week or so. I just got
RedHat 6.0 with application archives (4 CDs) for $11. That included shipping
and handling.
Good luck

I use ripenc, cdparanoia, xmcd, and bladeenc. The only step which is a
problem is encoding. I tried a different encoder (encode 1.0) and still had
the same problem so it's not limited to bladeenc.

The monitor remembers one set of settings per graphics mode. If you
can record the exact graphics mode (horiz. and vert. refresh), then
maybe, just maybe, you can set up exactly this mode in Windows,
configure the trapezoid etc., and go back to Linux. Then maybe
xdvitune will be able to help you work out just the horiz/vert size.
Another possibility is to try to run this damn CustoMax program using
Wine.

I don't think you really care for much higher resolutions on this
screen. 1152x8xx may be usable, 1280x1024 is pushing the limits, both
of the monitor and of your eyes.

Board is an ABIT BH6 with an XPert98 video card and ATI_Mach64 X kernel.
I'm running RedHat 5.2 with KDE 1.1.1 on top. As far as I can tell there
are four different screen blankers:
1. In the BIOS
2. In the kernel
3. In X
4. In KDE
I've done everything humanly possible, fiddling the BIOS settings, "setterm"
before starting X, parameters to the X kernel, and the KDE display settings to
turn all this crap off, and guess what the same thing still happens:
After about 1/2 hour the screen blanks and the monitor's power-save light comes
on and sometime after that, it goes nuts. Every minute or two the relays in
the monitor click, it powers up and depowers again. This is the computer's
doing, because if I touch the mouse it unblanks.
Who knows, maybe the monitor's power save circuitry has problems. But at least
I should be able to disable the screen blanking. Right? What on earth am
I missing? Surely lots of people are running this exact same configuration.

I've often run into that problem myself...doing things which can't be
done and running things which don't exist. :)
But seriously, It's good to hear that Voodoo 3 will do what I want it
to do; however, a little further research on this has me leaning
towards a TNT2 Ultra based card. The reason is that it seems to have
support from the SGI open source initiative, GLX. Whether that means
it's any better or not, I don't know, however, having support from the
"makers of openGL" would seem to be a feather in the TNT2's cap. TNT2
does not appear to be currently hardware accelerated; however, there
is the promise of that down the road. It is, of course, attractive
that Voodoo has hardware acceleration.
Decisions, decisions....
Thanks you for your reply!

Subject: 3c905C-TX installation failure

Hi,
I have a brand-new dual-PIII dual-boot (NT/Linux) system. Its network
card is identified by NT as "3c905C-TX". When configuring Redhat 6.0
(CD-ROM), it fails to autodetect my card (I select 3c905 at install time
or 3c59x later with "netconf", but neither seems to work). The card is
working fine under NT.
RedHat says that because of these trailing letters "C-TX" the card is
not supported, although this sounds pretty bogus to me.
In any case, do others have experience with this card? Any suggestions
with diagnosing a potential IRQ conflict, etc.?
Alternatively, I have another system currently running Win95 which I
will shortly upgrade to NT, but don't plan to install Linux. This
system's network card is identified by Win95 as "3Com Fast EtherLink XL
10/100Mb Ethernet Adapter (3C905-TX)". Note that there is no "C" in its
name. Since I don't need to run Linux on this system, I'm thinking of
swapping the two network cards. Do people have more positive experience
on Redhat with this 3C905-TX card?
TIA,
- Jonathan

It should just be a matter of reformatting the partitions you're using for
linux and running the new setup program from boot-disk? or CDROM?..
If you were getting rid of it in order to reinstall windross, then you'd
have to just format the partitions used for linux, and in DOS type in
fdisk /mbr (which would remove LILO from the master boot record.)

There is an ipchains-HOWTO, for much older kernels it was called
IP_masquerading, there are kernel config options that need to be
enabled.
CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL=y
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE=y
#
# Protocol-specific masquerading support will be built as modules.
#
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_ICMP=y
#
# Protocol-specific masquerading support will be built as modules.
#
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_MOD=y
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPAUTOFW=m
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPPORTFW=m
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_MFW=m
Your default route must point to your router of course. My guess is
that you are quite familiar with that issue on which the NET-3-HOWTO is
very helpful.
There is also a script about that automates the process for you, though
I can't find it, I'm probably trying to locate the wrong filename.

I did it many moons ago, but ran into one brick wall, Compuserve who
our company uses as a gateway does not support syncPPP, it took me 3
months to find out from this crummy outfit that a router wouldn't work
and we had to buy the TA I'm using now. The router would dial out OK,
but was not being answered.
Now I have FreeNet as an ISP, I hope to try it again when I get some
time, using the router on this ISP and the TA on Compu_crud.
I can telnet into the router from Linux, but it needs a serial
interface to program it fully, for this I'll hook it up to the Win 95
laptop, reconfigure it together with a code update and I should be
working.
If your ISP is not sending you streams of routing information, then the
constant dialling up problem is solved, i.e if it's OK now, it should
carry right on as is.
http://www.tux.org should point you to the ISDN mailing list where you
can follow questions and answers as well as email your own questions. My
router BTW is the Shiva AccessPort.

Ok, I solve the problem at last. It can be accomplished by two ways. One
way is that I add several commands in the file /etc/rc.d/rc.local to
"rmmod" sound modules and then "modprobe" them again. And another way is
that I move the part of loading sound modules in the file
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit into the file 'rc.local'. Both ways can work. But
for the later one, 'modprobe midi' seems not to work. However, even I
have no midi module loaded, I can still listen midi's. I am little
puzzled.
The problem is solved, but I still didn't find where the problem exactly
happens. :-(
