I installed RedHat 6.0 Kernel Build 2.2.5-15 and the screen is so large that
I cannot do hardly anything because of it being a virtual desktop. The part
I don't understand is that linux detects it as a Diamond V770 and allows me
to set the screen resolutions I would like to have. But it always comes up
the same size.
I am running: Tyan s1590s, AMD K6/III 400, 128Mb Ram, Princeton EO40 (In Rh
monitor list) and Dual Booting w/ Win95.
Thanks,
Micah

Er, what version of Xfree86 are you running? Versions before 3.3.4 didn't
properly support the TNT2 chipset on the V770. I forget what 6.0 shipped
with; upgrade your X if it's below 3.3.4!
Anyway, Xconfigurator seems to be b0rken wrt the /etc/X11/XF86Config file
that it generates. Here's the relevant lines from my
/mnt/redhat/etc/X11/XF86Config:
Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
Device "Nvidia Corporation|Riva TNT2"
Monitor "My Monitor"
DefaultColorDepth 32
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
EndSection
It's usually useful to have the highest mode you want first on the line.
So, my X always starts in 1024x768 at 32bpp. You switch resolutions by
pressing Ctrl-Alt-(Keypad-Minus) and Ctrl-Alt-(Keypad-Plus). HTH,

Thanks to all for the help,
The ALSA drivers did the trick.
http://www.alsa-project.org/~goemon/
I now have both video and audio working on this board with Linux=20
RedHat 6.1, X-free 3.6.
I followed the instructions on the ALSA site which included backwards=20
compatibility suggestions for OSS.
Here's what ended up in my rc.local for a working solution:
modprobe snd-card-intel8x0.o
modprobe snd-pcm-oss.o
modprobe snd-mixer-oss.o
aumix -L &> /dev/null
Now everything works just fine.
Note that the default after installing ALSA drivers is all devices set=20
to mute. Don't forget to use a mixer to turn up the volume before=20
testing for sound.

I've got a 600MHz K7 running on a Gigabyte 7IX-E board with
128MB cheap PC100 RAM. What can I say, coming from a 166MHz
Pentium, this thing really flies. That doesn't keep me from
over-clocking experiments, though: it appears to be stable at
110MHz system clock, which makes the CPU run at 660MHz.
At the moment I'm running stock standard RH6.1, I only built my
own GNOME and enlightenment from current sources.
I'm using an 8GB Seagate disk on the built-in UDMA33/66
controller, hdparm -t gives me about 20MB/s (after setting -c 3
-m 32 -u 1 -d 1).
The graphics card is a 16MB TNT2 Vanta, which appears to work
alright with the supplied XF86_SVGA server. Haven't tried sound
yet because I couldn't make up my mind yet as to which sound
card to get.
My NIC is a no-name Intel eepro10/100, so problems whatsoever.
Hope this helps.
Steffen.

My Micron Millenia Pro2 Plus system (PPro/200) uses an OEM variant of
the Micronics W6Li motherboard (it has no SCSI controller), and I've
installed several Linux flavors on it without problems (as well as
Windows 95 and OS/2).
I only have a single processor in this box, however, and as it had no
built-in SCSI controller I use an Adaptec AHA-2940U instead.

That's the same thing as a SEGV signal. It means you tried to access
memory that wasn't in your process's space; when it happens in a Linux
compile it means you had a memory fault (there is some statistical
chance that there is a wild pointer in GCC, but it's extremely
unlikely).

Look for memtest86 on freshmeat. It's an outstanding memory checker
(most memory checkers do an extremely superficial test; memtest
*really* exercises the memory.

Don't know, Marc.
I get similar reports at boot time from my Xircom CE2. I have found that
cardmgr does not seem to be detecting the card properly at boot. I don't
think this is a problem with kernel 2.2.14, so much as one in card
services. I did change the startup order in /etc/rc.d/rc.5 so that
networking is set up AFTER PCMCIA, but it does not seem to have made any
difference.
Do you have the latest release of card services? Check the PCMCIA HOWTO.
Doing a "cardctl eject 1" followed by a "cardctl insert 1" as root seems
to make it happy, though. I am yet to figure out how to do this
automagically.

I am using an APC SmartUPS 620 powering 2 Linux boxes and 1 Windows NT.
It is working reliable since 1 year and withstands 10 min power down. I
had only 1 shut down.
I wote my own Software in Perl providing:
- One Linux box is connected to the ups. The others are connected vi
TCP/IP.
- The system is reliable even if the network connection or the serial
connection
to the ups is broken (and reconneced).
- There is a http interface viewing the actual state of the ups. It
includes bar charts

Subject: BT-930: tape backup hangs system
Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 01:59:43 -0500
I have used a Micron Millennia LXA system for the last year without a
problem. Last week I
installed the tape drive, and since then the system hangs whenever large
(several tens of megs of data) transfers are performed between the tape
drive and hard disk drive. The system must be hard-reset to recover. It
is configures as:
Intel Pentium 166
64MB RAM
BusLogic BT-930 SCSI controller
Seagate STD224000N SCSI-2 tape drive (internal)
Western Digital Enterprise 2.17GB SCSI-3 hard drive (internal)
Linux 2.2.13
When I boot the system from a DOS 6.22 (yuk) diskette and run Seagate's
tape diagnostic utility, the tape drive passes all tests. The hard disk
works fine too. The system hanging almost always occurs when the tape
drive and hard disk drive have to share the SCSI bus. The system never
hung before the tape drive was added to the SCSI bus.
I have tried many combinations of BT-930 options - including slowing the
transfer rates for both the tape drive and hard disk drive to 5M/sec,
and toggling disconnect settings - as well as changing the location of
the drives on the SCSI chain, and termination methods (active only). No
combination of options has corrected the problem. However, when the tape
drive and hard disk drive are not on the two connectors nearest one end
of the SCSI chain, the system sometimes hangs immediately following the
loading of the Linux BusLogic Flashpoint device driver, so it is clear
that at least part if the problem is an marginally-stable SCSI bus.
There are no external devices on the SCSI chain, and the BT-930 is the
only SCSI controller. The SCSI cable connecting the BT-930 and the tape
drive and hard disk drive is 4 ft. long and has five 50-pin connectors
(4 connectors near one end of the cable, and 1 connector near the other
end of the cable). The drive at the one end of the cable is actively
terminated, and the BT-930 termination is set to AUTO. I tried BT-930
ROM versions 1.31 and 1.41i, but the system hanging problem persists
regardless of the ROM version. Again, this points to an unstable SCSI
bus. However, since setting the transfer rates to only 5M/sec did not
mask the problem, I suspect that another factor is involved (if slowing
transfer rates down would have made a difference, then I would simply
trim two connectors off one end of the SCSI cable for a quick fix).
Comments and/or suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks!
- Bernard

That's not much to go on. What model of laptop? What model of PCMCIA
modem?
Your problem could be:
1: kernel does not have the PCMCIA support installed
2: your PCMCIA configuration files are not correct
3: you have an unsupported modem card
4: you have an unsupported WinModem card (yes, they make them for PCMCIA,
too)
5: all of the above are OK and you simply haven't configured your
application and/or daemon properly
