I have been having extreme difficulties getting my MAD16 Pro sound card
to work on my 486DX 33. I have read through many of the help files,
READMEs, and HOW-TOs at the Linux Documentation Project, but nothing
seems to work for me.
DOS reports the specs of the sound card to be as follows:
I/O: 220 IRQ: 5 DMA: 1
MPU Interface:
I/O: 330 IRQ: 9
CD-ROM Interface:
Port Address: 170 IRQ: 15 DRQ: disabled.
I am mostly concerned about getting the CD-ROM interface working, but
the
isp16.o module seems to be ineffective.
Any Ideas?
Replies can be posted on the newsgroup or reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Colin

Realistically, this shouldn't be an issue. You really shouldn't change
disks unless you unmount them first. That way, you don't have to worry
about the disk change line.

Yes. (if you mean "Ports on ISA-Cards")

No. Linux works with shared IRQs on serial Boards since ages; I tried
it since Version 0.99pl6 with the following circuit:
Use one simple Diode per IRQ-Source with a common pull-DOWN-Resistor

Those diodes should have a small voltage-drop. perhaps use germanium or
shottky. I used 1N4005 (1 Amp, 400 V).

I personally use a Soyo 5Y-EHM (has an Eteq chipset, which is actually a VIA
chipset, I don't remember off the top of my head which one) and an AMD K6-2
333 with 64Meg of PC100 RAM, 3.2 GB (I assume you did mean "GB") WD Caviar,
and it works just fine. My NIC is the 3Com Etherlink XL (3c905), and it's
hooked up to my cable modem for IP masquerading as well. Everything works
like a charm; I have run RH 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0 with this setup.

If you have a problem with X it is usually possible to exit X by
pressing ctrl-alt-backspace. You could also try to switch to another
virtual console with ctrl-alt-f1 - ctrl-alt-f6.

Avoid that, your file system doesn't like it.

One more thing, where did you tell X to find the mouse? If X expects the
mouse to be on /dev/mouse, make sure that the symbolic link /dev/mouse
points to /dev/cua0 or even better, make it point to /dev/ttyS0 as
/dev/cua* will be removed some day.

Is this card plug & play? If its not, make sure the jumper points to an IRQ
and base IO not being used, and you probably have to pass an argument to the
kernel at boot time,
eg,
append = "ava1505,9,0x140"
or similar.
Have you recompiled the kernel w/ support for that card?
Also, check out the ZIP Drive mini-HOWTO

I checked it. I couldn't find any place to change the IRQs' setting. But
there is one place to select audio device's mode: disable, enable(where
audio's setting can be changed) and auto(comfigured by BIOS or OS). I
don't know the case of desktop. Maybe it's different to laptop. :-(

I have a old server in a at-case. whenever the circuit breaks the server
reboots automatically when the power comes back.
but now Ive a new atx-board with a atx-case and softboot and much more
and when the power is cut off and comes back again the machine doesnt
poweron by itself !! you have to press the power-button again. this is no
good for a machine that should run without any local administration for
weeks.

i have the same problem with my parallel zip and my printer. Both
modules cannot be loaded at teh same time. For some reason they can't
share the parallel port so if my zip is loaded i have to remmove the
module and then load the one for the printer. Its a bit of a hassle but
at least they both work.

They probably are, since we got one in our Unisys Aquanta QS server - 4x

I tried:

and from xv:
lpr -Pstc740p.upp
but for both of the calls I get this (when I check with lpc status):
stc740p.upp-ascii:

stc740p.upp:

The printer says nothing. No reaction. Only the green power LED is on.

This is what I did:
I downloaded the kernel source 2.2.5 in tar.gz format from the internet.
Make sure it is just 2.2.5 and not 2.2.5-15 or anything like that
Compiled the kernel with the following options (besides whatever you need,
maybe you need to read up on compiling kernels in HOW-TOs or a good book)
1.non-SMP
2. sound card (modular)
I configured lilo with the new kernel as my default boot option, booted into
linux kernel 2.2.5 and then installed the sblive driver as directed in the
installation direction that came with the driver.
My SBLive seems to be working fine, not with any surround sound frills like
you get in Windoze though. But what the heck, I am just glad that I can
listen to my CD in Linux.
So, happy compiling kernel.
write to me if you have any questions.

I'm getting a an error on a clean RedHat 6.0 install. My cdrom works
fine for the install, as it did on a earlier RedHat 5.2 install.
However, everytime I try to mount the cdrom, I get the error:
# mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/hdc as a block device
(maybe `insmod driver'?)
I believe the cdrom should be 'hdc' but it isn't even detected during

Does anyone have any ideas?

if i remember correctly from my old 16 assembly days:
counts for shift operations are in the C? register (ECX, CX, CL &c).
counts for the LOOP instruction are in ECX.
multiply results are in EDX,EAX.
dividends are also in EDX,EAX.
only EBX, EBP, ESI, EDI and ESP can be pointers.
has any of this changed?
