Hi, there,
It seems my prevoius posting doesn't appear in this newsgroup. So, I post
it again. If you find another one, I am sorry for that.
I have a sound card with CMI8330 in my Red Hat 6.0 box. I have tried the
following methods:
using the configuration offered by
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/CMI8330
reading that CMI8330_Mini_HOWTO
directly using "sndconfig" offerred by RH 6.0.
But... The problem is "sndconfig" can detect my sound card but there is no
sound when it tries to play sample sounds. Then I had to configure it
manually in "sndconfig". But I don't know those parameters appearing in
sndconfig, such as the I/O port of my sound card and the DMA channel and
the I/O port of the MPU and the IRQ of the MPU. How can I figure out these
annoying numers? Can I use those tools in DOS to find them out? And, how?
Because I don't quite that mini-howto, I don't have a clear idea to figure
them out.
I miss the comfortable environment of working with sound, help please.
Davis,

The linux USB code is under development at this time. You may want to go
buy a ps2 or serial mouse for a time. You can read about the usb code at

Assuming by "RedHat 6.0 kernel" you mean "Linux 2.2.x kernel", it
depends on what you really want -- you weren't quite specific enough.
If you mean how to compile a third-party module (like Don Becker's
updated Ethernet drivers), make sure to use -D__SMP__ -D__KERNEL__
-DMODULE and maybe -DMODVERSIONS, depending. Also if you are using
egcs 1.1 or newer, make sure to add -fno-strict-aliasing to the cflags.
(The current kernel has illegal constructs that work great ... until
you do aggressive type alias analysis, as the late-model gcc's can.)
If you want to compile something that comes *with* the kernel source,
just use `make config' (or `make menuconfig' or whatever) to select the
feature you want, and whether to compile as a module or no. Then use
the standard kernel make instructions: `make dep', `make bzImage' and
`make modules'. Installation of kernel and modules is left as an
exercise (in reading README files) to the reader.
(Note: I believe a kernel is the *only* Linux software which actually
requires a reboot to upgrade. Is it true that Solaris 7 even gets
around *that*, or am I misremembering an article somewhere?)

Actually, last time I removed Linux (not for good,
just because I like to upgrade clean.. Linux Rules),
I wasn't able to delete the Linux partition using
Fdisk on Win95B. I had to use the Linux fdisk to
trash all the linux partitions, before I could
use the Windoze fdisk to rewrite the drive.

If u haven't fixed it yet this might work. Maybe your cd device is
configured wrong. type "dmesg | more" scroll down untill it talks about
your cdrom device. It will say hdc hdb etc. if it is different than the hdc
you have listed above u must change it. Go to etc/fstab
in the cdrom area change it. Then to mount u should simply just type "mount
/mnt/cdrom"

Ben:
My system, VA-503+, K6/2-350, 64MB of 60ns FPM SIMMs (16X4, running at
AGP speed, BIOS setting 'Turbo') has been working fine since I put it
together 3 months ago. The only limitation I've experienced so far, is that
I haven't been able to overclock my non-CXT core 350, even at 2.4v (haven't
been brave enough to try 2.5). It will run at 3.5X100 and 112X3 all day
long, but not 112X3.5 or 100X4. I think the FPM memory probably has
something to do with that, I'm not sure though.
The 503+ is sometimes as finicky about SIMM memory as it is with SDRAM
(IMO).

A kernel config parameter in 2.0.37:
Memory configuration
CONFIG_MEM_STD
There are three memory configurations available. The standard
configuration allows use of just under 1GB of RAM with 3GB of
virtual space per process. The enterprise configuration allows
2Gigabytes of physical memory but limits the per process address
space to 2Gigabytes. The custom option allows you to specify the
split subject to kernel constraints. If you don't know how it works
don't pick it.

You can grab a program called ShowFat from the following site:
http://www8.pair.com/dmurdoch/programs/showfat.htm
It will tell you exactly which files are taking up those parts of your
disk. You can then take whatever actions are necessary to remove them
(turning off virtual memory, disabling anti-virus programs, etc...).

I have slightly the same problem.
I downloaded xatitv and i configured it and got a Mixer setting and
realizd the reason why i wasnt gettingsound was b/c i had accidentally
plugged the Line In cord from the vido card to the wrong port on the
sound card. I changed ports and i started to get sound when i would use
the composite input to play playstation games. I switched to the tv
tuner and no sound for some odd reason. I tried to open the Mixer
setting window again and the damn thing wouldnt open. I didnt know how
idid it before so i read the readme file and did what it said to do and
still the damn Mixer woulnt open. I emailed the guy who made it and he
asked me if i had teh latest version of gatos and itk and i said i
downloaded whatever was on the ftp server, there was only one version.
I emailed him that but i dont think i got a response. So......if u ever
hear of how to get sound let me know.
THanks

P.S I can get sound in everything else but yet it wont work using the tv
tuner in xatitv

This may be a duplicate post but. . .
WE HAVE IDENTICAL KERNAL, GHOASTSCRIPT & APSFILTER.
I ran your command
lpr -Pstc740p.upp-ascii /etc/hosts
And it worked fine.
I'm guessing maybe you didn't change In /etc/printcap
the device /dev/lp1 to /dev/lp0.
Check the Suse Support Database for the printer check list.
Also you still need to load stc740ih.upp and stc740pl.upp for the high
resolution stuff.
Hang in there, I worked about a month on this : )
You will get it!
