this is usually a limit set by your choice SCSI controller, hard disks
and other devices.

Subject: Request for help: Booting from Promise Ultra66 controller
Date: 10 Sep 2000 01:02:19 -0400

I'd like to use a Promise Ultra66 controller as a direct replacement
for my onboard IDE. Has anyone found an easy way to do this?

I have one disk with the partitions (in the original setup):
  /dev/hda1 /boot
  /dev/hda5 (swap)
  /dev/hda6 /

Currently I'm using kernel 2.2.16 with the Hendrick's patch.

I tried the following:
1. Compile the kernel with "Boot off-board chipsets first support".
Didn't do anything! It still looked for /dev/hda (onboard controller).

2. Add the lines:
     disk=/dev/hde
       bios=0x80
to lilo.conf. This is supposed to treat /dev/hde as if it were /dev/hda.
This didn't work either! It booted, but got a kernel panic trying to
   find the root filesystem.

Thanks for any help,
  Richard

reinstall linux and i added an isa modem to my computer . after a little
work i got the modem working, but now i am completely lost as to why my
sound does not work. i ran sndconfig and there were no probs. the cdplayer
works, but i dont have any other sounds(ie. sound events). in windows the
same thing happened. i found that when i wanted to play mp3s it would say
that the device was still in use. in windows the system sounds werent
working too. i think the problem has to do with I/O space and interupts but
i have no idea how to go about solving the problem. i ran isapnp, but i
dont know what to change things in isapnp.conf to.
running cat /proc/ioports tells me:

Yes its called:

ide-floppy

This is part of the Kernel. However, it is possible that it is not
enabled in the distribution you have. I started with Red Hat 6.1 and it
did not have this enabled.

If you are building your own Kernel, you should check to see that:

CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY

is enabled.

If you have installed your drive, you can exec:

cat /proc/ide/ide1/hdd/driver

or something like that depending on where you installed your ZIP
(/proc/ide/ide?/hd?/driver)

The system should respond:

ide-floppy version x.x

if the driver is enabled.

When I tried the tpconfig (SuSE6.4/2.2.17) I noticed that it only
seems to work when using the long option names, ie "-p 0" did not
work but "--tapmode=0" did...

I also applied the "touchpad.patch" to the kernel source, found at

Subject: Will the real NIC vendor please stand up?
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 06:19:35 GMT

I recently bought a Compaq Presario 17XL2 ("build your own") laptop. It came
with what they call a Compaq MiniPCI Combo 56k modem and 10/100 ethernet
card. I'm trying to get the NIC to work in Linux (Mandrake 7.1), but it's
not recognized by the kernel. There's no mention of it during bootup or in
dmesg, and /proc/pci says:

Bus 0, device 9, function 0: Ethernet controller: Unknown vendor Unknown
device (rev 8). Vendor id=14f1. Device id=1803. Medium devsel. Fast
back-to-back capable. BIST capable. IRQ 9. Master Capable. Latency=160.
Min Gnt=20.Max Lat=40. I/O at 0x1400 [0x1401]. Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory
at 0xf4000000 [0xf4000000].

I cannot figure out exactly what this thing is because I'm getting
conflicting information.

I called Compaq technical support, and the guy I talked to said it was an
Intel product, gave me a couple of part numbers (198721-001 for the NIC,
198720-001 for the modem) and suggested I call Intel to find out what driver
to use. Intel technical support said they didn't know about the product,
it's probably an OEM so I won't find any info about it on their website, but
it might be a Pro 100 so I should try the e100 driver. Well, I downloaded
and compiled the e100 driver, but when I try to load it with insmod it just
says "Device or resource busy", just like every other driver I've tried to
load.

I can't find a single mention on the web or in the newsgroups about anyone
installing Linux on a Presario 1700 series laptop, or trying to get a Compaq
MiniPCI ethernet card to work in Linux. What I did find, though, makes me
suspcious: the vendor id (14f1) matches that reported by Conexant (formerly
Rockwell?) modems. However, I can't find any evidence that Conexant makes a
MiniPCI ethernet card, only modems. So what type of beast is this?

I put in another call to Compaq, but I don't expect an answer for a while.
Is there anyone out there who has gotten ethernet working on a Presario 1700
laptop and/or a Compaq MiniPCI combo card?

Thanks,

       Scott

Subject: BIOS setup on an old 386
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 17:51:14 +1100

Hi,

I'm trying to ressurect a 386 machine, a 'Reply Model 32/386-33MHz'. I
want to stick Linux on it, probably Small Linux or something similar.
Problem is, it won't boot up at all, ie, on boot it gives me the
messages:

Invalid Configuration
Invalid Chipset Parameters
Please run the setup program

Press <F1> to resume ...

(hitting F1 at this point gives me);

Reply Model 32/386-33MHz
Diskette error - correct problem and press any key to retry

I get this message when there's either no disk, or a non-bootable disk
in the drive. I've tried various DOS boot disks, they get rid of the
'Diskette error' message, but the machine still hangs. Using a Linux
Boot disk, I've got to the 'L' of LILO, and no more. I think this means
that the machine has bad disk parameters set in the BIOS. So,

a) has anybody heard of the Reply Corporation who apparently made this
machine, and are they still around at all?

b) how do you get into BIOS setup on the things? (I've tried all the
usual keys, unplugged the keyboard, held the space bar down etc)

c) anybody have any ideas as regards to bootable BIOS setup disks that
might be useful here?

TIA,
Tom

Subject: Zip 100 Parallel Port Drive

I am running RedHat 6.2 on one machine and 6.0 on another. Both machines
have Zip 100 parallel port drives connected. The RH 6.2 machine has Win
98 on another partition and the RH 6.0 machine has NT 4.0 Workstation on
the other partition.

My problem is that the Zip drives work fine with Win 98, NT 4.0 and
RedHat 6.0, and I have tried swapping the drives from one machine to the
other and the result is the same. Module imm refuses to load on RedHat
6.2 ( Linux Kernel 2.2.14-5.0). I get the same error message whether I
use insmod or modprobe, i.e.:-

"imm: Version 2.03 (for Linux 2.0.0)
 scsi: 0 hosts
 /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/scsi/imm.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy"

This is all strange territory to me, but does it mean that the wrong
version of imm.o is provided with RedHat 6.2? If so, how do I obtain the
correct version?

Then maybe I have got hold of the wrong end of the stick altogether.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Are you sure that you need imm.o? There are two different kinds of
ZIP-drives (from the software's point of view), so two different
modules as well.
The other module is called ppa.o

Thanks for your interest.

Yes, according to the documentation I have seen, I need to use imm. However,
I have tried to load ppa also, with the same result.

Maybe I should have said "typical" instead. Clarification; By
"normal" I was referring to everyday home computer activities
like browsing the web, wordprocessing, playing games. Stuff that
wouldn't require any extraordinary performance from the hard

I'm a SCSI (only) user myself, but I know that when someone
*asks* if he needs SCSI, it usually means he doesn't really need
it. It's not decent to recommend an overkill solution to someone
who's just a bit in the dark at the moment.

You *can* use a Jaguar for transporting groceries, but a light
