Thanks. It seems to me ASUS P2B series is the way to go, judging from
all the replies. I'll be running Linux and FreeBSD on it.

Please excuse my profanity, but what the hell are you trying to get

Well I got both working, although the 'native' channel sometimes causes a

I wish I could be of more help, but your experience is the same
as mine. The setting that munged my filesystem was hdparm -m(x).
I've had some success with kernel 2.3.5 too, and like you haven't
any plans to risk repeating my recent misery (it did get me to
upgrade to Slack4.0 however).

I'm using one of those flaky Taiwanese boards (SP-A586B) and
finally have everything running nicely, except UDMA, for whatever
that's worth. It won't work with Win98 or NT either.

BTW, anyone having problems with kernel 2.3.7 baling out at

You can use /dev/ht0 or the non-rewinding version /dev/nht0
Use the mt command (have not seen format and I don't think you need it)
If you define TAPE=/dev/nht0:

mt rewind
mt erase
mt eod
mt status
mt tell
etc.
see man mt

Yep, but the problem is /dev/lp0 is used by my fine-working laser

That is certainly good news. I note that there are quite a few of us who

Dear Peter:
    Sorry for ask in advance.

    1. I mean I want to write a hardware driver to support SMP kernel (in
single Processor, it works fine), but I heard in kernel 2.2.X, we can
ignore -D__SMP__, so I ask this question.
    2. BTW, I guess SMP driver coding method is like following, but I don't
know it's true or not, could you give me an advance. Thanks for your help.

*use spinlock() and spin_unlock in driver.c to protect critical section
*compile it with additional option than in Single Processor -D__SMP__
*use insmod to load it into kernel

    3. do you have any information(Web Site) about how to write SMP driver
in linux?

I would have just mailed this, but I figure the issue with
Compaq computers might bite someone where it hurts when partitioning,
so here it is:

Our Dell Dimension P200v also uses this.

> the screen during boot-up

Don't forget that on all but very old Compaq computers, you
have to have their BIOS setup partition on the hard disk for this to
work. Otherwise, you have to boot from a BIOS setup floppy. Ackph.
Warning when partitioning your disk (not just Linux, but any OS): you
have to leave room for this partition. I'm not sure if it has to be
at the beginning of the disk, but that's where Compaq's BIOS setup
program installer puts it. You had best run their BIOS setup program
on a new or wiped hard disk BEFORE creating any other partitions, or
it might not work. Also, although the BIOS setup and diagnostic
programs in this partition seem to be DOS programs, the partition
itself does not show up as a DOS partition in DOS FDISK (I haven't yet
tried looking at one under Linux).

> Dell: Ctrl-Alt-Enter

I have seen this on very old Dell computers.

> (I'm interested in receiving information on other BIOSes to add them
> to this list.)

In addition to the above, fairly new Micron and HP computers,
and also IBM Aptivas and PC300GL's: press F1 or F2 during POST. I
always forget which one and have to find out during boot of the actual
computer. Some different models from the same manufacturer are
different. Some older IBM Pentium computers (PC340?) would only allow
BIOS setup after power-on (not reboot).

Hey, I=B4ve found what was wrong!!!
As I said: cat /etc/hosts > /dev/lp1
I got an error message that the device is not installed.
And really: I forgot to load the 2. parallel device driver.

I fixed that and now everything works fine on Linux.

Thanks!!!

But the NEXT PROBLEM:
I want to make my Epson printer available for all the WindowsNT4.0
workstations in the LAN. Using SAMBA this is in most of all cases no
problem. But it is with the Epson Stylus Color 740.
That Epson is visible in the Windows' network neighborhood and I can
install it as network printer using the appropriate driver-CD. But
whenever I want to print anything, I only get an error message box:
"Cannot print. Wrong parameter!".
I don=B4t have a clue what that parameter could be. :-(.
I tried to install the Epson Color ESC/2 printer driver and that works
fine (means: I can print well) but this driver only provides 360dpi
resolution. That=B4s why it doesn=B4t satisfy me.

Do anyone have similar problems?

Thanks for your answer. I did that and was able to find the irq this way, but no
io addresses, just two areas of memories (FAC00000 - FAFFFFFF and FDA00000 -

Is it possible that this card do not use any io address ? Or the same one than the

Hi,

I assembled a computer with some old parts just to give it a try with
Linux. I had used Unix at school so I am familiar with the most common
"line commands".

I run an old 8bit ALogic 1Mb graphic card. I checked that it is is
specified in card's docs that it supports 16 bit colors mode. However
there is no way I can get more than 16 colours (8 bit mode) for a
640x400 resolution !(?) I tried to change the 8 bit to 16 bit in
XF86config but I get an error:

"16 bit SVGA not supported for this chip"
and
"no screens found".

I also tried probing with Xconfigurator but I only get the 8 bit mode
supported. What am I missing here ? I have put the monitor as Generic
SVGA supporting 640x400 (and it is actually the highest resolution it
supports, but I have seen that monitor displaying 16 bit colours under
Win 95)

I Then decided to add a PowerVR graphic accelarator with 4Mb hoping
that this could help (could it ?). As there is (of course) no Linux
driver with the PowerVR I wonder how can I declare it to the system and
make it to change the display of KDE from 8 bit colors to 16bit (if this
is possible ?).

thanks,
Erwin
