Try setting blksize to 0 for variable block size. Some OS's do not write
the same block size through a write session.

I recently donwloaded a 140MB file and had some one copy it to a CD for me
under Win95. When I look at the CD under Linux I can see 68MB of the file
but when I look at it under a Win95 macine I can see the whole thing.

What's up with this and how can I see the whole file. I don't have access
to a CD-RW under Linux or another UNIX OS.

Thanks

Hardly anything complicated about that, is there?

The setup correctly picked up imps2. Yes, I also tried to use generic ps/2
setting, but that also didn't work (that is, it works, but it is

Subject: Partitioning for new computer?
Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 09:32:24 -0600

I am having a new computer built on which I would like to try out Linux as
well as Win 98.
Untill I can get a second hard drive can I partition my present hard drive
to run both?
If so could I then remove all traces of Linux and move it to the new hard
drive when I get it?
If someone could direct me to the proper How-To's it would be a great help.
The hard drive I have is a Maxtor Diamond max plus 5120 10.2Gb.
Thanks in advance.

IDE and ATAPI CDROM are fine. You don't need a postscript printer, most of
printers, if not all, works under Linux. Linux uses filtering drivers that
translates postscript to the printer format.
Before buy anything check, and recheck, and the check again ;), the
hardware compatibility list available in any linux distribution. I mean
check
everything: motherboard, video card, modem (especially modem !), mouse,
ethernet card, etc.

If you like Red Hat distributions, (what is not to like?) look at:
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/hardware/index.html
Make sure your hardware shows up in the list. use a recent distribution
like RH6.0 ( very cheap at www.cheapbytes.com, few bucks but no support or
printed manuals), then we'll get recent drivers for most videos/sound and
some nice tool for sound configuration.

Most good hardware works fine under linux, some just dont' work yet, like
some latest video cards, winmodems (controllerless), most paralell port
scanners, usb interface based. Some other hardware needs workaround to
make it work, avoid them unless you like to waste time ;).

I have revision A3 of the manual. It says you can use an AMD K6-2 400
with the memory speed at 66 and the FSB at 100. So I did use that
combo, successfully for a couple of months until I got some PC-100

I think FIC got tired of listening to people who couldn't figure out
the jumper settings for non-PC100 Ram and changed their manual to
'suggest' that you need PC-100 with the 100 Mhz FSB.

Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 17:23:28 -0400

I had this same problem with Win 98 and RedHat 5.2, but had been
mucking around with the partition tables with both Partition Magic 4.0
and Linux fdisk so can't say I know what actually caused the problem.
I could read the partition tables with Linux fdisk or PM 4.0, but FDISK.EXE
would just hang the system.

When I installed RedHat 6.0 I wanted to change my partition table layout
so backed up my user files, deleted all the Linux partitions, and started
from scratch. The Disk Druid in RH 6.0 worked OK (the one in RH 5.2
didn't) on my 10 Gb HDD so I used it. I can now at least read the DOS
partition with the DOS FDISK.EXE.

Alex;

Probally the best deal goning these days if you want a P2 capable board
with a BX chipset is the ASUS P2B series. Yes this board is liked by
overclockers but you don't have to use it that way. I think its fair
to say that there are very few boards on the market, if any, as stable
as this one. The board also has a fairly nice BIOS.

Its just to bad that intels product line is wavering all over the
place. It would be nice to know that we will have an upgrade to slip
in the SLOT-1 slot a year or two down the road.

The only thing you might want to consider is a board based on the GX
series chipsets. But you will have to evaluate weather they are worth
the money. Personally I would look at a Alpha systems if a dual P2
machine is not going to be enough.

Best of luck

Subject: Auto-init DMA on SB16?
Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 15:38:26 +0100

Hi folks,

I and another guy developed an application 2 years ago (to play back seismic
data as audio) that uses the SoundBlaster16 under DOS. We require very
precise timing (to know exactly what the sound card is actually playing at
the moment when somebody presses a key), and the way in which we implemented
this was to set the SB16 up in Auto-initialise DMA mode (see the SBHWPG on
www.soundblaster.com).

In auto-init DMA mode, a DMA buffer is used, the card reading through the
buffer constantly (looping through it), and sending an interrupt each time
it finishes half of the buffer. What you do when it finishes reading the
'bottom' half is you refill the 'bottom' half while it continues ... playing
the 'top' half... and when it sends the next interrupt, it means it's
finished the 'top' half, so you refill that while it plays the 'bottom'
half. This works well because all that is required is to count the
interrupts and to make the buffer sufficiently small to suit our resolution
requirements.

It has been suggested that I port the software to Linux (well, to Windows
was suggested before, but that's a horrible idea). This sounds nice, until I
read up on sound programming in Linux... As a user-level program, it looks
like there is no access to such low-level stuff. /dev/dsp just supports you
writing data to it and reading data from it. I assume that what happens is
that the /dev/dsp driver keeps a large buffer of what you've written to it,
and uses something like Auto-init DMA (or one of the other modes) to feed it
to the soundcard. The problem is that this buffering will mean that I won't
be able to be certain of what is playing _right now_.

Do any of you have any idea how I might be able to do this in some other way
(I'm not about to write a replacement driver for the card, which ... if I
understand correctly ... is probably what would be required to gain "access"
to the interrupts).

Any help would be most welcome! If you can give me any useful information,
please either e-mail me [sj (at) cp (dot) dias (dot) ie] or follow-up my
article. :)

Regards,
sj
