I'm using a zoom 56k voice faxmodem. I have pnp disabled. It dials out
fine and connects fine. After logon and pass, I recieve a line of
characters and then NO CARRIER. I asume the charaters are some type of line
noise. I can connect fine through win98.
I've disabled Kflex and V.90 with init strings and still NO CARRIER. I've
tried connecting through Xwindows and it doesn't even dial out. I followed
all of the How-To's and viewed screenshots of how to configure Xwindows and
minicom. So I've been at this for a few days now and need some help.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? Please post here.
Thanks in advance,
jp

Glich, Red Hat 6.0 (kernel 2.2.5 and greater I suppose) can share the parallel
port and the between printer and Zip ... I think it's strange that can't share two
scsi cards!

I'm sure there are mini-faqs out there to help you, but since I have a
similar setup, I can give you the basics.
To enable DHCP, first try using linuxconf. under
Config->Networking->Client tasks->Basic host information, click on the
tab labelled "Adaptor 1." You can click on DHCP there. Linuxconf isn't
the best program in the world, but it'll make this a lot easier on you.
For the X-windows problem, try pressing ctrl+alt+"plus key on numpad".
That toggles through the resolutions you have set up. If you still
don't get the resolution you want, you'll have to alter the file
/etc/X11/XF86Config. Scroll down to the accelerated driver (should be
at the end of the file) and alter your "Modes" so that the resolution
you want appears. Be careful with this though, because if you dont'
have your monitor and video card settings entered properly (and possibly
if you do), you could have problems.
As with anything in Linux, tinker at your own risk (and enjoyment!).

I would like to start by apologizing for posting this again. I know I
have seen someone else post this problem, but I can't seem to find it.
Anyway, I have finally got my system up and running on RH6. Last night I
got my ppp connection working with my ISP. I am using pppd and a PAP
authentication. Everything works fine except it is really slow. It
averages about 1k/sec and stalls quite often. I have a 3com 56k int. ISA
PnP modem. I was hoping some one could tell me how to correct the
connection speed. I did notice in the log file that on connection it
gives an error that the module 'compress-21' 'compress-22' and one other
can not be found. Would this have anything to do with my speed drop? If
so, how can I correct it? Thank you in advance for any help you can
provide.

Yeah, I was using that too! I wasn't sure if it was -m16 or -c3 that did it,
but it seems these should definitely be avoided for this mobo. Strangely,
using those parameters brought my laptop (cmd640 chipset) to life. Before I
put those in, it was taking nearly TEN minutes to open Star office! Now its
under 1 min!!!
Anyway, thanks for the hints. Hopefully it will prevent anyone else reading

Try? It is dead easy, install a 2.2.x kernel (2.2.10 is out) and
use the ensonic 1370 driver (not the creative one). Works sweet. Later.

This is a feature not only of Matrox but all cards have that feature in
XFree86. Change resolution with ctrl-alt-+ and ctrl-alt-- or edit
/etc/XF86Config (make a backup copy first) to change the default
resolution.

The installation instructions should work just fine. Linux IS a Unix. If they
don't, all they might need is a little tweaking to get it set up and going.

perhaps try:
tar xvf /dev/st0 | tar xpf - > /dev/st1
'p' is the 'receive from pipe, which is how you're sending the data to the 2nd tar.
then send the output of that tar with device redirection (>) to the 2nd device.
or just use dd:
dd if=/dev/st0 of=/dev/st1
and make sure the blocksize on both devices are the same.

Unfortunately my CMI 8330 is on the motherboard. That means that its default
settings are set by the bios during boot up. All I had to do was look those
settings up, and apply them - as detailed in the howto. It worked instantly,
even without isapnp. The only way you may be able to discover the settings
on your sound card is via Windoze, if you have it installed. Didn't it come
with any documentation?
If you have a driver disk for it, you may be able to initialize it to known
settings using a dos config utility, and a bootable dos floppy. However, if
you haven't got a dos config utility for it, I don't know what to advise
next. I can assure you that it does work, and very well, under Linux.

Whoops, I still use Slackware 96 also known as Slackware 3.1 so I
suppose you already have my file then...
I don't know which would be the best way to find a workaround for your
missing disk change line. If you are familiar with the kernel source it
will probably be easiest to patch the kernel. If you are familiar with a
soldering iron you might find it easier to do a hardware hack. A
hardware hack will also be reuasable if you upgrade your kernel.

Are you able to ping out from the server? Are you able to do something
like "lynx http://localhost" on the server?

I'm not familiar with redhat, but maybe it would help to install
in.identd in /usr/sbin? The file lives there on my Slackware installtion
and it is called from /etc/inetd.conf just as it seems to be called from
your inetd.conf.
