Dear Reader,

For some years now have I been running various Linux distributions on my
PC. Some months ago I bought a portable pc (Intel Tillamook 266) and
installed Redhat 6.0 on it (kernel 2.2.5). Installation was without
errors, except I had some trouble (for the first time in my life) with
the Xserver. The notebook has a Trident 9385 so I used the
SVGA -Xserver. All 640x480 resolutions gave in all the refresh rates a
strange distorted screen, but because I wanted to run in 800x600 it
wasn't a problem. The 8bit and the 16bit gave also a strange screen (it
was normal except that all the non-widget areas were blue-striped?). So
I used the slow 24-bit 800x600 reolution. All looks well except my
Mathematica, Netscape and WordPerfect Icons in de buttonbar are black
and white (and strangely dithered (see attached picture)). In the 8bit
and 16bit color-depts the buttons were ok, except for the blue lines.

So my question is: Has anybody out there experience with Linux on
Portables and can help me with possible altering the modelines of the
/etc/X11/XF86Config file, or has otherwise an explanation of the strange
things I'm seeing.
