you're not alone on the planet. RealPlayer actually don't
play
anything. It always give me the 19 or 38th errors. I also
follow
the instructions. I'm not really sure if they (RealGuys) ve
tested the

Ah, by the way i look through the error pages for 19 and 38,
they actually
are not helpfull since the real player for win works
perfectly on my second machine

I am using gqmpeg 0.4.4, it works but I find the sound jitters when I
change screens in kde, or when access harddrives, I now use xmms, the
playback is a lot smoother, apart from that, the sblive works with cds,

IIRC, the es1370 driver doesn't supply the standard OSS /proc interface --
it does, however, provide OSS-compatible sound devices, including
/dev/mixer. Aumix (for example) should be perfectly happy once the
driver is installed.

BTW, as someone else in this group has already pointed out, the ALSA
drivers should also work with this card.

Subject: Can't write to IDE zip drive
Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 21:02:38 -0500

Hi,
I have a brand-new pretty standard PC with and ATAPI zip drive. I have
no trouble reading from the drive (in either ext2 or vfat format), but I

get numerous write errors when I try to write to the drive. (Sample
errors below.) I'm running Redhat 6.0 right out of the box.

I've tried more than one disk in the drive, with the same result, and in

fact, the same thing happens on a second, identical computer. Also,
both reading and writing work fine in Windows 98. So I don't think
either the disk or the drive is defective.

The zip drive appears as hdd in linux. It is on the same ide cable as
the cdrom drive (which works fine---at least when I read from it. I
haven't tried to write to it. :-) Both devices are configured (by
jumper) to "cable select". I tried setting the cdrom to master and the
zip to slave. The result: it still didn't work under linux, and it
stopped working under Win98. In fact, Win98 couldn't find the cdrom,
and it thought the zip was an ordinary floppy drive.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Needless to say, the Dell computer
people weren't much help. And the RedHat people can't seem to solve it
either. If possible, please email me directly. ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Thanks in advance.

Cliff Bergman

In fact there is no advantage in having 2 drives.

Easily.

I would get RedHat-6.0 (eg from www.cheapbytes.com for $2)
and read the rhmanual on the subject.
Basically, when you install RedHat Linux you are asked
if you want to partition the disk,
and can use DiskDruid or fdisk for this.
(I would use fdisk.)

I have a 9GB disk with 10 partitions (I think): vis
NT (1GB), DOS (64MB), /boot (32 MB), / (1GB), /usr/share (1GB),
/usr/local (1GB), /usr/src (1GB), /opt (1GB), /usr/tmp (1GB), swap (250MB).
All except the first 2 are Linux partitions.
The last 8 are logical partitions in an extended partition.

I think it is a good idea to have a lot of partitions
though some people disagree.
It is better to have /boot (or / if there isn't a /boot partition)
near the beginning of the disk.

As to getting rid of Linux from a disk,
if you format a partition you get rid of the info on it.

Absolutely not. Linux runs Quake, Doom, and a host of other games. If
you'd bothered to read the post before you flamed it, you would have seen
the word "databases", clear as day. Linux has SQL. By contrast, Windows
users are used to a host of database front-ends (Paradox, Access,
FileMaker Pro) and would be reluctant to give them up to make a complete
Linux conversion. Similarly, there is software for things like online
banking and various ISP's, not to mention numerous search tools (MP3Find
and Express (an online search tool) are just two of these). Add to that
the driver issues mentioned earlier in this thread, and there are some
potentially strong incentives for a new user to at least dedicate part of
their hard drive to Windows.

I believe in singing the praises of Linux just as much as the next guy.
But ease of use and appropriateness for beginners are simply not
qualities that are found in Linux. A user will have a much easier time
of it if they install Windows first and move to Linux as their experience
and the complexities of their growing computer systems warrant it. It's
just silly to think that the average novice with a modem, a printer, and
maybe a scanner will gain anything with Linux. It's simply not a
casual-use OS.

You might try Phat-linux http://www.phatlinux.com they have a windows
installable umsdos/slackware based system that seems to include support for
rpm. It even includes a start menu item that will reboot from windows,
straight into linux without seeing that ugly c:\ . As long as you have
lots of disk space and some unix experience and patience you Windows files
will be fine using this method.

has nothing to do with the apg. try going to www.redhat.com and looking at
their hardware list and downloading the new rpm xserver. if that doesn't
work try to locate the exact apecs of your card and then set them manually.
rh 6 can be quite tricky, for a newbie i would also suggest trying to obtain

Slackware 4.0 is one of the best distributions as is. It's your setup
that's messed up. Run netconfig again and make sure you add entries to
/etc/rc.inet1 for eth1. The gateway should be the same as provided by
your ISP. Don't forget to edit /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts. Make
sure your cabling is right too. The cable modem goes in eth0 and eth1 is
part of the internal networks hub or lead terminiator on a coax setup.
Use 192.168.0.1 and up for the internal network. Your static ip from the
ISP is for eth0.

Subject: difference in PCMCIA controllers Rev. 0x82 and 0x83

Hi,

I wonder if anybody out here knows the difference between PCMCIA controllers
with
revision 0x83 and 0x82. Especially the one build into the AMD ELAN SC400.

Any hints to where I can find documentation on one or both of these
controllers
would be very helpful.

Thanks for bothering,

Gnter

Hi,

I have a 1962b at home, working fine. I submitted the modelines to the
database at:

http://www.netmaster.ca/LUG/monitor/search.cgi

search for '1962b' and check the 'model' box.
