I have a Linksys LNE100TX card installed in an Amptron PM8600C MB using a
Cyrix P166+. The driver disk that came with the card has a file ("tulip.c")
to be compiled in order to replace the current tulip driver on my system.
The tech support people gave the following advice:

>1. Mount Diskette 2 included in the original package
>a. Log in as root, admin or superuser, and type the following at terminal
prompt:

>mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /floppy

Quit, then accept and activate the changes. Now type the following command
at the prompt:
>ifconfig
> You should see the "eth0" as one of the interfaces, meaning the card
is successfully installed under Linux.

Pretty good instructions except, when I followed them, I received multiple
"file not found" error messages. I'm certain this is a path problem, since
I found all of the files noted in the tulip.c file.

I am a total newbie to Linux but not a total newbie to computers. How do I
set up my system to successfully implement this compile?

Thanks in advance...

Has anyone tried to look at support for this motherboard and its onboard
160/m scsi? It uses the aic-7892 onboard chip which technically is
supported under the aic-789x driver. I have heard people have had no
luck getting it to work at 160 Mb/s, but can you still use drives at 80
Mb/s? Can you even mount scsi drives with the motherboard and it onboard
aic-7892?

Whe I originally got the scanner, I didn't have SCSI cable handy, so
I used the USB backport and got it working.

I have since decided to go through the SCSI interface. I recompiled
the kernel with the USB backport, just to be sure.

When I load the SCSI module (dc395x_trm) /proc/scsi/dc395_trm/0 lists
both my SCSI devices.

Shouldn't the scanner show there as well?

SANE does not find the scanner. I have all the scsi modules loaded.

Hi all,

I recently installed an ati xpert98 graphics card (rage pro chipset);
now my tv card (Pinnacle studio pctv) no longer works. The tv card
was working fine under my old graphics card (a generic S3), but now
when I try to start xawtv or kwintv I get the following:

can't open /dev/video: No such device
Warning: kwintv: kv4lsetup had some trouble, trying to continue anyway.

Fatal: v4lx: Error opening v4lx device /dev/video: No such device in ::v4lxif

The only thing I did as far installing the graphic card was to remove
the old one an put the new one in its slot. I'm really not sure how to
proceed. Is this possibly an irq conflict??

Any suggestions as far as what to look into would be appreciated.

Thanks,

A coupla things.
First make sure your add-on controller can handle ATAPI devices.
I have a Promise Ultra/33 which cannot. If this is the case you
must juggle a bit and make room for it on the onboard controller.
The only place you will see if it works is during bootup. Watch the
messages (or replay them using dmesg) and look to see if the
second drive is mentioned. If it is picked up it should be /dev/hde
or /dev/hdf or /dev/hdg or /dev/hdh. If it is not you must install
it on the main controller, as far as I know. Another indication is
if Windows recognizes it (if you have Windows on the machine).

Second, /dev/cdrom (notice direction of slashes - you are not in
Redmond anymore) is not a real device file but a symbolic link to
the actual device. Type "file /dev/cdrom" and you should get
"/dev/cdrom: symbolic link to /dev/hdc" or some such. If your second
drive is picked up on boot you can (as root) enter
"ln -s /dev/hd<whatever-letter the drive is> /dev/cdrom2" or whatever
you want to call it.

/etc/mtab only lists the filesystems that are currently mounted. If you
can not detect the drive it is obviously not mounted and won't show up.

/etc/fstab is a file that you write. Once you get the drive recognized you

can enter a line in it (similar to whatever is in there for the current
cdrom drive), e.g. like "/dev/hd<something> /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660
ro,usr,noauto 0 0"
and this will tell mount that this drive is to be mounted in directory
/mnt/cdrom2 (a directory which you will create as root), that its
filesystems
are of type iso9660 (default CDROM filesystem), it is read-only, can be
mounted
by anyone, and is not automounted on boot-up. Thenceforth you can just
mount
the drive by typing "mount /mnt/cdrom2" or "mount /dev/cdrom2" (if you did
the symlink)
and all will be well.

Subject: PCMCIA Chipset detection failure (Compaq)
Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 10:53:18 -0500

Hello,

I'm having problems setting up my Webgear Aviator 2.4 on my Compaq
Deskpro 4000-5166. I have the Webgear set up fine on my AMD 300 based -
bastardized computer and my Toshiba 410 CDT Laptop using
pcmcia-cs-3.1.5. I then decided to get a cheap computer to use as a
gateway so I got this Compaq. BTW the Webgear Aviator 2.4 is the same
product as the Raylink from Raytheon.

I think the problem lies with the Compaq and the PCMCIA to ISA adapter
card supplied by Webgear. I have two such cards (RayCom RIS100) and they
both work in my AMD based system. 'probe' from cardmgr recognizes them
as : Intel PCIC probe: i82365sl B step found, 1 sockets. The only chip
on the adapter card is a Ricoh RF5C296. If I run probe on my Compaq, I
get "not found" for all three types. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Please?

The card does not show up in the "Bios" setup. The Bios allows me to
create a new "resource". Is there a reason I would have to do this? Does
Compaq do screwy things with the interrupts? The machine has 4 PCI slots
and 3 ISA slots (1 is a shared PCI/ISA). I have placed the PCMCIA
adapter card in every ISA slot and I have the same results (These being
no results). I've also placed my Expert Color ISA sound card in every
ISA slot and it works in every ISA slot. The remaining slots are empty.
The computer does have a built in graphics adapter and a network card
that seem to be on the PCI bus. After trying pcmcia-cs-3.1.5 I got
pcmcia-cs-3.1.5.13 and I get the same results. Suggestions on what to
try next? I've thought about throwing the Compaq out the window but then
I'd have to find a new cheap computer... so I'd like to get this to
work. If you think you might want any dumps from /proc/... let me know.
Any help would be appreciated.

You may reply to the newsgroup or directly to me by removing the anti-spam

Umm, right. As I said, it sounds like I'll be fine with 60ns chips -- that
wasn't what the exchange between William and myself was about, though. The
question is, does it matter whether those 60ns SIMMs are 2K or 4K
refresh/cache/whatever-the-right-term-is?

As I said in my original post, more than one RAM retailer told me that only
computers made within the last year-and-a-half would take 4K EDO SIMMs.
They said I needed the older-tech. 2K SIMMs, which are unfortunately quite a
bit more expensive. Are they full of crap, or not?

I did a bit of research and learned that 2K refresh SIMMs use "symmetrical
(11x11) addressing", and 4K SIMMs use "asymmetrical (12x10) addressing". I
have no idea what those terms actually mean, but it sounds quite likely that
4K SIMMs would not work in a device that wasn't expecting them.

I know some people are saying, "Use whatever you want," but has anyone
actually used 4K SIMMs in an Optra?

As far as the desktop is concerned I get the message of Tx RingBuffer
Full and the same problem. Both systems don't connect to the internet
using linux anymore, which makes me wonder if TWC did something? I now
I am running windows 98 on the laptop and 95 on the desktop and they
connect just fine, any help would GREATLY be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm trying to use the emu10k1 module at
        http://opensource.creative.com
Unfortunately, whenever I try to load the module (which compiles fine), I
get
emu10k1.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
I disabled PnP OS in the BIOS, but my kernel is compiled with PnP
support. Do I need to get rid of that, or is there some other problem?

Thanks,
Janet
