I had this problem too - although 16MB was as far as I could see. I was
advised to investigate the "cruft" mount option for the iso9660
filesystem, but didn't get around to it as my box is dual-boot, and I
used Win95 to pull it off the CD.

Hi, I am trying to install Caldera 2.2 or RH6.0.
PC is a 486dx4-100, 40mb RAM, 2.1 gb Hdd, 32x CD-ROM,
hda is connected via IDE controler on ide1, CD on ide2

Problem,
During boot frm floppy, either a RH6.0 or Caldera 2.2 boot disk, it
de-compresses or loads the kernel then fails giving the error msg
"unable to handle kernel in dereference module 000000"
Oops: 000
CPU: 0
and a whole whack of hex
*the hdd is blank, no partitions have been created. It was wiped clean
using windows fdisk.
Any ideas?????

This isn't quite correct, on my laptop (ATI LT PRO), I just need to use the
Framebuffer device to initialise the screen to the desired video mode, but
then, I use the XF86_Mach64 server, set up to use the same resolution /
depth as the framebuffer device. Viola, decently accelerated X (Assumption:
I don't think the XF86_FBDev will be as fast as the Mach64 server.)

Also, You don't need XFree86-3.3.3.1, I've used the framebuffer device of
XF68 3.3.2 compiled for Intel, which works fine.

I'd check out www.sunhelp.org and look for the FAQs or other info on the
ROSS processors. The top item on that list is likely to be some sort of

We are trying to port a driver for a PCIcard from the 2.0.x
kernel to the 2.2.x kernel.
No it turns out that the current->timeout call has been removed
from the task_struct, defined in <linux/sched.h> and <asm/current.h>

How can I write the following piece of code for the 2.2 kernel:

{
  current->TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE;
  current->timeout=jiffies + 1;
  schedule();
}

Any hints are welcome,

Thats a hardware problem, Filipe. You may be overspeeding the h scan
rate just enough to soften the high voltage. Take a look at the
X86Config file, and compare the monitor's max scan rate specs with what
in the file. Or it might need the attention of a tech type.

Cheers, Gene

Hi,

I've got a laptop that has a video in powered by an ATI card. After lots of
research, I found out that behind the video in there sits a Bt829, which
isn't yet supported by bttv.

Does anyone know if there is a bttv update that supports this chip, or where
I can find documentation for the Bt829 that would enable me to write such a
driver myself?

This is a classic linux glitch! ;-)
but you see, if you use kerneld, the modules get loaded and unloaded as
needed. I have no problem using both the printer and the zipdrive, i
just have to umount the zipdrive when i need to print. The docs you
print while the zip is mounted, gets spooled onto /var/spool, so you can
print files from the zip too!

I didn't have to do anything special to have it this way, i just run
slackware out-of-the-box.

I recommend not to use Win9x's Fdisk at all. It has more than once
corrupted my partition-table in such a way, that I had to remove all my
partitions in order to use Partition Magic on it. There were errors in
the part.table, and PQMagic just showed a big red bar, instead of my
partitions.
My recommendation: when modifying/creating linux-partitions, use
linux-fdisk. When modifying/creating Win9x/DOS partitions, use Partition
Magic.

I've used a Diamond Stealth 64 Video Vram (Video 3000) for years on
a 17" screen, 1024x768x16@106Hz with a beautiful picture. And that card
is based on the S3 968 Chipset.
So the S3 chipsets are OK, as long as they're out in cards together
with good other components (clockchip/memory/RAMDAC etc).

Oh yeah! And a mail client which can wrap lines like it should!

I have to be one of those "unlucky" people which run into problems
with Windows all the time. Karma - I guess.

I remember quite vividly how my "Windows wizzard" friend spent quite
long evening rescuing my 'doze installation because we had to switch
a graphics card for one reason or another and this was not a pretty
sight to watch. On Linux side I had to replace one server with another
one and switch one or two links. I was up and running with a full
graphics under five minutes.

The same friend had also tons of fun after my son was installing some
game from Microsoft, not some third party manufacturer, (this what these
Windows are nearly exclusively for) and hit "OK" after confronted with
a dialog "Should I update this or that .dll for you?". He confirmed,
naive and innocent, and all the hell broke loose; booting doze was
quite a challenge after that.

>From the more recent stories - after waisting tons of time an effort we
had to replace in a customer laptop a good ethernet card, Cardbus type,
with a less capable one because '98 had a disconcerting habit of locking
up totally after more that 1 MB was transferred through this interface.
This after applying some non-obvious registry tweaks suggested by
this card manufacturer; without these the card simply did not work
at all. '98 had also a nice habit of forgetting that this card is
there and "installing" it multiple times; after that things could not
be uninstalled leading to tons of Registry fun. The same card, after
initial installation challanges (pcmcia-cs package had to be updated to
the latest version) did work like a clockwork under Linux (this is a dual
boot laptop) but the customer insisted, for inscrutable reasons, that
he wants something which works under '98 as well even if it is slower.
Oh, well....

Most people do not see such horror stories because they buy machines
preinstalled. Than the installation is really easy. You want the same
ease for Linux - do the same. Buy preinstalled and with warranties.
Simple.

Does anyone have any comments about either, or any recommendations ?

I suspect that there is very little to choose between the UMAX or Mustek
or any other scanner at this price (100 - 150), am right ?

7200 rpm is transparent to the OS.

You need a supported UDMA/66 controller and the right cable to do
that mode. Upcoming motherboards will support UDMA/66 on-board.

Yes, there's a (Windows) program to put that drive in UDMA/33 mode.
It's doubtful you'll notice any performance difference, as current
drives can't sustain anywhere near 33 MB/s. This is one of those
advances that is mostly hot air.
