Subject: SCSI Jaz Drive Problem

Hi,
I've got a 2GB SCSI Jaz drive which had been working without a hitch
for a year. Now, whenever I insert a cartridge and try to do anything,
such as mount, fdisk, make a filesystem, the SCSI bus continuously
resets:
Sep 12 11:28:11 tesla kernel: ncr53c810a-1: restart (scsi reset).
Sep 12 11:28:11 tesla kernel: ncr53c810a-1-<3,*>: FAST-10 SCSI 10.0 MB/s
(100 ns, offset 8)
Sep 12 11:29:13 tesla kernel: SCSI host 1 abort (pid 15230) timed out -
resetting
Sep 12 11:29:13 tesla kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 channel
0.
Sep 12 11:29:13 tesla kernel: ncr53c8xx_reset: pid=15230 reset_flags=2
serial_number=15399 serial_number_at_timeout=15399
Sep 12 11:29:13 tesla kernel: ncr53c810a-1: restart (scsi reset).
Sep 12 11:29:13 tesla kernel: ncr53c810a-1-<3,*>: FAST-10 SCSI 10.0 MB/s

Sep 12 11:30:15 tesla kernel: SCSI host 1 abort (pid 15230) timed out -
resetting

Can anyone tell me if this is a SCSI problem, Jaz drive problem, Jaz
Cartridge problem?
Any help appreciated!

Hi,
Does anybody out there have a copy of the HP ScanJet/ScanJet Plus driver
for 2.2.x kernel? There were some pointers to
ftp://rvs.ctrl-c.liu.se/pub/wingel/hpscan/hpscan-2.2.7.tar.gz on some
mailing lists but this site refuses connections.

Doh! Do I feel stupid... that's what happens when you have to scribble down

Date: 12 Sep 2000 11:00:45 -0500
I installed Windows 2000 on the primary hard drive (IDE3) before
creating the RAID-1 array. I found the Highpoint information on
installing Windows 2000 particularly useful.
http://www.highpoint-tech.com/370faq.htm
I'd downloaded the drivers to a floppy disk and pressed F6 during
Win2k isntallation to specify the additional driver. The dialog boxes
aren't all consistent. Don't freak out if it says you're installing a
SCSI controller. Be sure to have selected booting from the appropriate
drive on the highpoint ctonroller in the highpoint bios.
In partitioning, I created a FAT partition of 500Mb (for booting) and
an NTFS partition on the rest of the primary drive. After that, I
followed the procedures for copying and mirroring the primary disk
(IDE3 fr me), to the mirror (IDE4) in the highpoint BIOS program when
I prepared the RAID-1 mirror.
It seems to work beautifully. I haven't had any of the problems I see
in the group here complaining about the kt7-RAID.
I have my first drive in IDE3, second one (mirror) on IDE4 which the
highpoint nicely hides from Windows 2000. My CDROM is on IDE1 as the
master right now.
For Linux, I plan to install it on another hard drive on one of the
other IDE controllers. I figure I should be able to boot to the
primary partition of IDE3 like I am now, and add a boot.ini entry to
point to the linux partition on that new drive. I don't plan to run
RAID with linux on these two drives, although, I don't see any reason
why it wouldn't work now that there are Linuxpatches available for all
distributions ( see http://www.highpoint-tech.com/370drivers.htm ).
Good luck...and be sure to share your results with the groups.

Well, you posted the info, and here, yes you do have something to be
sorry about, because you invented a different line ("mem=192") than the
one you were given. All I did was read it and note that you didn't do
what you said you were doing, which I presume you could have noted too!
Checking that you are really doing what you believe you are doing is a
fundamental necessity before taking any further steps .. that's
something one learns after the first 10 programs written.

Well, a kernel panic is what you'd expect under most conditions with a
messed up /. I'm not clear from your report if it panicked when it
couldn't find the disk, the file system or init (which, according to you,
you didn't install). Could you clarify which? And how did you specify
the root partition when you rebooted with a boot disk?

Ah .. now I read the subject line. No, a promise controller will
almost certainly not be supported in 66 mode by a RH 6.x boot disk.
Put it in 33 mode (or plug the disk cables into the 33MHz slots). Boot.
Recompile kernel, put on boot disk, and try again.

Nope. All you need is a floppy to boot off that'll have a driver.
All linux install disks will have such a driver.
I was using a soundcard driven CD back in '93. OS/2 back then required
the user to edit the config file and copy a driver, but that changed in
'94.
Microsoft operating systems are the only exception.

I'm not sure about this, but perhaps because SPP is the oldest (is

Subject: xcdroast and devfs
Date: 12 Sep 2000 17:28:33 GMT
I'm having a bit of trouble getting by CD burner (TEAC CD-W54E) working
under linux. I'm using xcdroast 0.96e under Linux 2.4.0-test6 running
devfs. My distribution is Debian woody.
There are really two main problems:
The first is detection of the burner. Sometimes cdrecord -scanbus
works without a problem. Other times I get warnings that "the SCSI
wants to send us more data than expected," but the output looks
ok. Other times the output is completely garbled. Finally,
sometimes cdrecord reports that it can't open the SCSI bus ("file
not found"), but I think I've tracked that down to a module
loading problem (if I depmod the correct things, this problem
goes away).
Once detection is working (and I usually have a try a few times
to get it right), I fire up xcdroast and it fails with a message
about not being able to find the generic SCSI devices. Sure enough,
`ls /dev/sg*` returns nothing, though it was my understanding
that devfsd should make this work transparently.
Previously I was not running devfs, and xcdroast started up ok, but
the data read process failed utterly (attempting to play an audio
CD would result in random pops and other noises, no actual music).
Before devfs, I would _always_ get the "SCSI wants to send us more
data" message. Now I only get it most of the time.
I decided to try devfs because the latest CD-Writing HOWTO implies
that it provides a good solution to the device creation problem.
In all other respects, devfs seems to be working fine (i.e. I can
get at my ethernet, mount a data CD, use PPP, etc.).
I've searched Deja and the various Debian lists but I can't seem
to find anyone who has quite the same problem I do. Help!
Thanks in advance.

The line is:
append="64m"
note that the append= is part of the line. Also, TRIPLE CHECK YOUR CMOS -
Make sure there are no Memory Hole settings enabled.
After all the trouble I had here in the newsgroups it turns out that this
was ENABLED after my BIOS upgrade. I don't know why, but it didn't stay
disabled the first time I changed it either.

you must make sure that the M in 64M is capital
append="mem=64M"
and then you must remember to run lilo afterwards to make the change take

I'm very sorry Leroy, but I can't understand a single thing you wrote.
Must be because you posted to an English-speaking group, don't you
think so? I'm sure there are some groups like nl.*.linux.* where you
can speak your mind in your native tongue. Or repost it in English on
the other hand.

Most, if not all externals will work. I have had good experiences w/
the Zoom 2949L. It is widely availlable. Best Buy stocks it. You can
find a list of comapatable hardware at SuSE's site. It can help you.
