Burn red hat. Call it fried slop.
I had Red Hat 5.1 (!!!) and had similar problems, except I had what quickly
became more permanent damage after a few uses and I read up on installation
procedures before doing anything.
Go SuSE! You get a LOT more for the same amount of money and SuSE doesn't
rely on a popular name to sell itself. I have 5.3 and will be buying 6.1
fairly soon, believe it or not.

Since each 8-bit byte transferred via RS232 serial also entails a start bit
and a stop bit, shouldn't the factor be 10 instead of 8 ?

SuSE also has a component database. Try http://www.suse.com/index_us.html and
look for "Support" on the left of the screen.

Hi all. I have some doubt what the information from Dmesg means:
Memory: 64108k/66496k available (732k kernel code, 384k reserved, 1272k
data)
1.What's this means? I have 128M memory.
2.Ramdisk driver initialized : 16 ramdisks of 4096K size
???
3.hda: WDC AC28400R, 8063MB w/512kB Cache, CHS=1024/255/63, UDMA
what's 'UDMA' means? Is it Ultra DMA?
4.eth0: RealTek RTL8139 at 0xb000, IRQ 9, 00:48:54:3a:98:1e.
what's this means : '00:48:54:3a:98:1e'
5.why there are so many lines here? Does it mean it keep on testing this
protocol?

It's all controlled by the BIOS. Sometimes you can set the IRQ manually
(slot-by-slot), but I prefer not to. Remember this rule: The lower the PCI slot
(slot 0 is next to the keyboard connector on an AT/ATX board), the higher the
IRQ.

at your boot prom prompt you can also type
module-info
and you'll get a list of the details about your cpu modules - speed, cache
size, bus speed etc. I _think_ the RT625 runs at 100MHz - mine do.

I am currently running an old Trident TVGA 8900c video card and it is
working, but it isn't up to my standards video wise! If you figure it out

Subject: Modem Trouble - strange stuff
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 09:29:45 -0500
Hi everybody,
Ever since upgrading to the 2.2.x Kernel, I have had strange things
happening with my modem. It is a NewComm 33.6Kbps ISA PnP Fax/Modem (now
that's a mouth full).
I have isapnp set up correctly to initialize the modem, and I know it
works as the modem still dials out and connects.
The problem I am having is the first time I try to dial out, I usually
get a 'NO CARRIER' signal. The second time will dial and connect
succesfully. After the connection is terminated, the NO CARRIER problem
recurs for the next try.
Does anybody have a clue what is going on here?
Thanx in advance,

ident I see that the card is recognized, but minicom won't work on any

an internal winmodem that is interfering. Is this true? How can I
disable the winmodem, other than with wire cutters?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I think I may, but I dont remember the exact syntax:
in this section: (or whichever one you are using)
# The Colour SVGA server
Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
Device "Generic VGA"
#Device "My Video Card"
Monitor "Dell Ultrascan 21FS"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "800x600" ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection
I think you add a virtual key in the Display Subsection:
Virtual 800 600
try it, i think there are NO quotes in that one.

The SM in SM56 is soft modem ie. "Winmodedem"

You didn't mention what your NIC card was, how are you connecting to
the 3com modem? I'm Running RH 5.1 with an intel etherexpress PRO/10+
ethernet card connected to a hybrid cable modem. I did have to edit
the /etc/config.modules file, also you have to be careful if it's a
duel boot system, P&P causes conflicts if enabled on the Win9x side.
Hope this helps

I'm experiencing complete lockups (even Alt-SysRq.. keys don't work)
when I startup a CD writer program called krabber

repeatable to some extent (will happen maybe 50% of the time).
This is the output from the system log just before the crash:

Of course there is no CD in the drive, and I don't know why krabber is
trying to load one at startup (but I can fix this, I think). I just
concerened that this can cause a complete lockup.
I also experienced a complete lockup when I tried to mount the CD
drive (scd0) with a blank CD in it.
I just purchased the CD writer, and I've been experiencing these
lockups since.
My system is as follows:
Dual PentiumPro 200MHz
All SCSI setup as indicated by the bootup messages below.
Linux 2.2.10 (same problem with 2.2.5),Egcs-1.1.2 compiled
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

uh, you normally don't want to do that.
however, GFS (search at freshmeat.net) should allow you to do that.

The only solution that I've heard right now that will work is using the
console ATI framebuffer support and the "fb" XFree86 server. You won't
get any acceleration, but at least the card will work.
Chances are this card will be properly supported by XFree86 4.0 when it's
released later this year.
