Given a Millenium-II is two video card generations old, yeah prices should be
reasonable assuming you can find it anywhere (like a flea market). It was an
ok video card.

Well stated. From my experience with both onboard Intel PIIX4 and
Promise U/33 controllers, neither was stable even at +12% over spec
(75MHz). "Unstable" in my case was not catastrophic corruption as the
original poster, but rather infrequent retry timeouts for linux, and
random registry/system file corruption on w9x. There were never memory,
graphics or network issues so my assumption is that EIDE is the most
intolerant PCI-attached subsystem (Maxtor & IBM DMA2 drives).

Subject: corrupted partition table
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 20:52:25 GMT
Help! I recently installed a large 17Gb disk, installed Win98 and Linux
onto it and all was well. Until I decided to redo the partitioning. I
deleted the Linux partition from Linux's fdisk (booted up from another
disk), and then created new logical partitions in an extended partition.
The mke2fs went well in the new logical partitions as did all the file
copies into the new file systems. But at the end, I got an error message
that there was no room. Anyway, now I can not view the partition table
with Linux's fdisk at all. I can still boot into the Win98 installation
for some reason (it is the first partition on the disk), but the DOS
fdisk can not view the partition table either. Partition Magic says its
corrupted. I know that Win98 uses cyls 0->636. Is there any way I can
rebuild the partition table without losing the Win98 installation? Is
there any way I can repartition the disk at all? I need some utility
that can open the partition table, in whatever state its in.

Subject: Problems: Iomega Ditto EZ 3200
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 14:16:30 -0700
All,
I did a search of the newsgroup at Dejanews re. this problem without
finding a post with any useful info. I am submitting my problem here in
hopes of getting some useful info.
I have dual boot Win95 & Caldera OpenLinux (kernel 2.2.5) box with an
Iomega Ditto EZ 3200 tape drive connected to a Ditto Dash accelerator
card installed. The card is addressed to the following params (I used
them because they were suggested in the ftape HOWTO for this tape unit):
I/O base=370H
IRQ=6
DMA=2
The tape drive runs great under Win 95; I cannot get it to run under
Linux. I am using the ftape 3.04d module that came with the Linux
distribution CD. I tried updating to ftape 4.02 but ran into multiple
errors when trying to compile (something I also would like to get fixed,
but we digress).
The ftape modules load at boot just fine. So I tried to test the tape
drive using the cmd "tar -cvf /dev/qft0 /root" and I got an I/O error. I
am appending the dump from /var/log/messages that I got as a result:

You do realize that you are supposed to pay the sales tax, in Illinois
there is a form on your state taxes where you itemize all the stuff you
bought and then pay the tax on it. The fact that people are NOT doing this
is what is leading the gubbiment to create a net tax.

Subject: More or fewer drives better for RAID
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 22:39:10 GMT
Hello,
I am about to build a server for my website. I need plenty of disk
space. I want to implement the best disk array I can within budget.
I am planning on getting the DPT SmartRAID V Decade PM1554U2 SCSI RAID
controller.
I was planning on getting 3 36.4gb Quantum Atlas IV hard drives.
Would getting 6 18gb drives be better?
What kind of performance impact would this have?
With three drives I was planning on doing raid 5.
With 6 drives I could two sets of three mirrored?
Would on be better than the other? I am only learning about RAID now.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

You might want to try "imm" this is the driver I use on my Redhat 6.0
system which is installed on my laptop. You may also be missing a SCSI
module, not being familiar with Mandrake this is just a guess. Even
though you are using a parrallel port the disk is seen by the system as a
SCSI device. I'm not at my laptop at the moment but I seem to remember
loading something prior to imm myself.
Apparently you are already aware of the need to look for the fourth
partition on the Mdos disks so thats not your problem.
Best of luck
