If you are lucky, the printer will take a long time to render the
picture. If not, it will have a postscript error. I did some minor
postscript with 4 mbytes and it would take 30 minutes to render. After
a 64 Mbyte, memory it would only take a minute or so before it would
start.

If number-crunching means week-long jobs where you'll lose money if it
crashes on day 6, I'd imagine you should take every precaution you can
think of, including an UPS and ECC-memory.

If it means running seti@home in your spare time, why bother?

It all depends on what you lose if it crashes. I don't have ecc memory
at home - but I do at work. There is a difference between a reboot for
me and 30 people staring at me for 4 hours doing nothing while I restore
the latest backup...

Hello :))

I have successfully upgraded from RH6.1 to RH6.2.
Upgrade was clean and painless. All my settings
remained untouched... but ... unfortunately
after upgrade one minor problem appeared.

I am using KDE as my desktop. Part of the
KDE desktop is 'kppp' modem dialer. I am not able
to start 'kppp' dialer from the KDE.

It does not start. .... but... if I type 'xhost +'
in the xterm then the 'kppp' starts. So my question is:

Where should I insert 'xhost +' to make the whole
boot process automatic. In order to execute 'xhost +'
X11 must already run.

Or, perhaps, I amsearching for the solutions in the
wrong place.

OLD RH6.1 did not have this problem.

Any ideas ?

Igor

P.S: output from 'console':

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
kppp: cannot connect to X server :0

Hello,

when I partition my second harddisk with cfdisk as one large Linux
partition I get the following results:

cfdisk reports one partition "sdb5".
fdisk reports two partitions: "sdb1: Extended", "sdb5: Linux", both
occupy the same disk area

Why do I get two partitions?
Why aren't the partitions numbered incrementally?
What's the difference between "primary" and "logical" partition?

Thanks, Markus

I'm not looking at this right now so forgive any stupid
explanations: Kde has a startup folder where you can run a
sort of 'autoexec' file or files. I put one in there called
fixkbd with my favorite kbd mapping in there and it runs
after kde has started. I also do my xset commands of various
types there too. Do the help from kde on startup and you'll
see it. Very easy. By the way , if xhost + works (for one
x-session only, Ithink) , then it just means that your
hostname isn't correct or resolved in /etc/hosts. If you fix
up your hostname you shouldn't need to use that command. (or
that's my understanding of it).

Can anybody help me with this one: I have a PC with 128 MD RAM and I am

lots of RAM.

My configuration: AMD Athlon 600 Mhz.

I could tell you that you shouldnt use the MegaCom xyz SuperIOConnector

Have a look at SuSEs website www.suse.de. Theres a hardware

I thought of that, but didn't really pursue it for two reasons:
1) ttyS3 was the port in question, using IRQ 10
2) the serial HOWTO gives examples using IRQ 9(2), and implies that
it is a good one to use.
-
After some further tests, it looks like ttyS2 works normally, so my
problem is really limited to the ttyS3 not functioning.
If all else fails, I will try it eventually, but it means opening
up the *&^!$# computer again to move the jumper, something I prefer
to avoid if I can.

Hi,

suppose I wish to increase the amount of shared memory (32 -> 128 MB),
normally done through /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax ... but before any of
the startup processes take off. Is it required that the setting is
performed before a process (= database server) that uses it is launched
?

The thing is - where do I specify this so that it is done automatically
at startup :

* in /etc/lilo.conf ? (If so, how ?)
* rc.local (is it sufficient, since this is run after the startup
  processes ?)

My environment is RH 6.0 with kernel 2.2.5-15

You're confused ? Think about me ... ;-)

I have a new piece to my puzzle. Armed with a null-modem
cable, I conducted several tests using "cat" to read and write
characters to and from the ports. I connected "ttyS2" and
"ttyS3" with the null-modem cable.
-
If I boot without starting X-Windows (to runlevel 3), then
I can freely dump characters to either port, which are transmitted to,
received by, and read at the destination port.
-
When I start X, I can only transmit characters from "ttyS2" to
be read at "ttyS3". If I dump characters into "ttyS3", they are not
transmitted from "ttyS3", (according to information in
"/proc/tty/driver/serial") and consequently not received by "ttyS2".
-
Therefore, I think I have narrowed my search to some conflict with
X-windows, or perhaps the graphics card. I have a Creative Labs
3D Graphics Blaster PCI based on the Rendition Verite 1000 chipset.
-
I am still looking, because I only want to use these ports with
graphical applications which require X.

Subject: printing problems with ye old Epson740
Date: Mon, 03 Apr 2000 05:51:06 -0400

Hi, I'm having a small problem with my Epson 740 as far as getting it to
print anything (it doesn't even make the regular grring sounds Epsons
are so great at). I had it working previously under Redhat 6.1 using the
easyprint program (the company that makes CUPS) demo version allowing
for a 45 day trial. It was working great until a day or two ago. As far
as I know, I did nothing to change my configuration that should make it
not work. I know everything is plugged in correctly because in prints
under windoze without any problems.

Thinking perhaps the 45 day trial ran out (I don't think it did, but you
never know..), I tried installing the demo over again. I'm not sure how
well they track users, I was also wary about it perhaps just not working
anyways. Well, after I installed it, it still didn't work. So, close to
giving up hope, I uninstall proprint (the easyprint program), and I
install RedHat6.2, which seems to have a UNIPRINT driver for the
Epson740 [plus I would rather use an opensource alternative -- I tried
xw_print, and could never get it to work]. Using printtool, I set up the
printer to what I thought were correct parameters (mostly I just set it
to 360x360, and tried every other option (basically the two for fast
printing, and sending the eof.. I never tried the fast stepping, I but
don't think that should be checked..).

When I try to print, I don't get anything. The jobs just sit there in
the queue. I try to print out a test page with printtool, and I still
(as expected) get the non-result. I'm a little worried that installing
all these different print drivers might have messed up an important
configuration file some place.. yet another reason I installed 6.2... I
checked my BIOS, its set to ECP+EPP, with EPP 1.7 (I think thats EPP,
and not EPC).. I'm not entirely sure what these mean, but this is the
setting I had it on when it worked before...

Aware of the Redhat problems (although I'm sure this got fixed with
6.2), here is my altered /etc/conf.modules:
alias scd0 sr_mod # load sr_mod upon access of of scd0
alias scsi_hostadaptor ide-scsi # SCSI hostadaptor emulation
alias eth0 tulip
alias sound sb
pre-install sound /sbin/insmod sound dmabuf=1
options opl3 io=0x388
alias midi awe_wave
post-install awe_wave /bin/sfxload /etc/midi/GU11-ROM.SF2
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
options ide-cd ignore=hdd
# alias /dev/printers lp
# alias /dev/lp* lp
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

If anyone has any clue, I would eternally grateful. I'm in dire need of
printing under Linux, as doing LaTeX under windows is a major pain.

Thank you for your time,
abes
