Hi all....

I have aproblem that has me stumped... I have a celron 333,intel
board(440lx),onboard yamaha-pci sound, onboard mach64-agp. Two pci
slots, and one isa with a modem, ne2000 clone, and an aha-2930uc scsi.
My problem is that I can not auto probe or manualy insmod the scsi. I
have recompiled the kerel four times, twice with the aic7xxx driver
modular and twice as monolithic. I am also using scsi emulation for an
atapi cdrw. When you use modprobe on the modular version it gives you a
'device or resource busy' and fails. I don't think the scsi emulation
has anything to do with it since I had a pas16-scsi and scsi emulation
working in another computer with kernel 2.0.36. I am booting off of hda
so I don't think I need a new initrd. An attachment of the dmesg output
is included. Is there something simple I can't see?

kernel 2.2.6 and 2.2.10 (tried both)
pci reports
ide interface i/o at 0x1000
usb interface i/o at 0x1020
audio interface irq 11
scsi interface i/o at 0x1400 irq 10
eth interface i/0 at 0x1040 irq 5
vga interface i/o at 0x9000 irq 9

I have swapped the eth and scsi around to no avail. I have used from the
command line and as an append(modprobe aic7xxx 'aic7xxx=0x1400,10,7,1').
Without modprobe and the ''s from the append line of course.

If any of you have had any problem like this or can help in any way it
would be greatly appreciated. <not a lie.....

                                        thanks in advance,
                                                Doug

Subject: Ali Aladdin 5 chipset
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 19:53:26 +0200

Sorry, this may be a trivial question. My motherboard broke suddently,
and I had not enough money to get another VIA; so had to buy an unnamed one
with Ali Aladdin 5 chipset. It works, but I cannot enable DMA on IDE
controller, so disk drives are slow. I have 2.2.9 kernel, and it does not
support my chipset. Is there a patch or a new (also officially unstable)
version allowing me to use my disks with full performance?

  Thanks in advance.

And if you had the motherboard I had, you could set the bus
speed all the way up to 50MHz (the board had one VLB
slot, three ISA, and three PCI) and the processor at x4...
Yeah, for a little while I had a 200MHz 486-class computer.
That thing smoked when I played Duke Nukem. =) But when
I retired my Stealth 24VL for a PCI #9 videocard, the PCI
bus wasn't too impressed with being clocked at 50MHz.
40MHz it liked. So I ran a 5x86/160. That was my first
Linux box (Slackware 96). Ah, the memories...

And since when are 'baud' and 'bps' interchangeable?
(Wonder how many people realize that the 33.6 signal
of today is still riding on a 2400 baud carrier?)

I use PART (short for ranish partition manager) it is small easy to use
and works well, and its FREE . you can get a copy at
www.lester.co.uk/ranish/part
if part wont see your partition tables you can try norton utillitys
rescue disk set. if you have norton utillitys its the two yellow floppys
that came with it. just use ndd (norton disk doctor) to scan the disks
and it should find and try to rebuild your partition tables

Hi,

some distributions contains ISAPnP. You strart PnPDump and give awnsers to the
questions. The distibution SuSE 6.1 contains a light version of OSS. They
Kernel mustnt support Sound if you use this program.

That sounds likely. Whether I can find a board now is less likely. I
intend to change my computer soon, but may still do this as I know a few
people who would appreciate a computer even as old as mine. I have heard
nothing good about RedHat since I started subscribing to the Linux

just went through the same thing and I came to the conclusion that a
router/hub dedicated device is the way to go.
 It's much easier to configure;
all you need is an ethernet card in your computer. And they're cheap:
~$300 and you get a hub for free
(since a modem is just as much and there's only
one internal that I know of for linux in the US).
 The ISDN-router takes care
of dial-on-demand and setting up the connection.

There are HOWTO or other docs concerning serial consoles I
believe. You could then run the serial line to another
box which has dialup access. Using a serial terminal program
like "minicom", you should be able to do what you describe.

1. Downloaded the drivers from the manufacturer.
2. As root - Backed up the Config.in and makefile in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/sound (I also have a
/usr/src/linux-2.2.5/drivers/sound directory - not sure which I should
use)
3. Extracted the downloaded tar file in the above directory
4. cd /usr/src/linux (also tried /usr/src/linux-2.2.5)
5. here's where my real trouble starts - 'make menuconfig' (aborted
because of an error)
5. then tried 'make config' - it seems with this command that I had to
specify every single bit of h/w & s/w that my machine has - there were
defaults that were shown but I had no idea in about 75% of the questions
what I should be picking. As soon as the defaults looked wrong I
aborted the execute as I didn't want to lose everything.
6. The instructions that I have say to "select sound card
(Config_Sound=m") support & CMPCI driver (Config_sound_cmpci=m) as
modules.
I never got that far to see those prompts.

If anyone has some info that would help I would sure appreciate it.

The Red Hat distribution seems to include a sndconfig program that
simplifies the installation. Why doen't Caldera have something similar?

Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to get this card working
under linux? (Note: the SMC EZ card is NOT the SMC EtherEZ)
There is no mention of it in the ethernet howto, and whenever I
try loading the smc untra32 module to drive it, I get either a
"Device or resource busy" message, or if I provide IO= and IRQ=
options to it, I get a "symbol for parameter not found" message.

any ideas?
thanks,

There is work underway to port Linux to some of these machines,
but I doubt it is far enough along yet to be of much use right
now. My suggestion, if you are looking for an ulta-portable
Linux based machine, is to go with a Toshiba Libretto.

Currently I am running Windoooze 98, what I would like to know is:

1) I have an S3 based Savage4 32 meg video car
2) SoundBlaster live value sound card
3) Olivetti JP883 inky jet type printing thing
4) Parallel scanner

The question is, what will and what will not work. The scanner is not a
problem as I can always a SCSI one. I have run SUSE 5.3(I think) or was it
5.2 before. It ran ok on the 4 meg PCI video card, no printer, no sound. I
was happy with extreme speed of Linux and X-Windows.
