Hi everyone,
I have a Sony Vaio Notebook with 96 MB of RAM. Because
of the TX-Chips, only 64 MB can be addressed by the Cache.
Now my questions:
1)Is it usefull, to restrict Linux (SuSE) to only 64 MB?
(The Computer seems to be a little bit slow)
2) If I restrict it, can I do something useful with the remaining
32 MB?
Thank you!
Regards,
Georg

I'm running VMware 2.0 . Perhaps the "near future" is now?

After trying with the 3c90x driver for my 3com 3c905B-TX card, it
still locked my machine solid when running 100mbps. I am now using a
RealTek 8139 network interface which is also running 100mbps and this
card is also causing my pc to be unstable (first sign is that a reboot
occured at 6 o'clock in the morning. No indications why in the log).
I will now see if I can make rtl8139 run at 10mbps to see if it makes
it stable. I am not sure if this is related to the TNT2
card/XFree86-4.0.1/nvidia driver combo I am also using, but I think it
is and most likely not a problem of the network drivers at all.

Thanks a lot. I have found a german dealer who guaranties Win 95, NT
and Linux compatibility. Only one drive thought. I have found one
reference to a twin case, but that seems to be unavailable. It should
to be a freecom, who don't say anything about the Linux support :-( .

You probably chose a wrong mouse type.
you can change it with mouseconfig (I do not remember if there are some

My advice :
1/ try to boot on the floppy (any old MS dos system disk) : does it work
If not, check the cable.
2/ if yes, look at the messages at boot time with dmesg|more
3/ if okay, try to format a disk with mkfs /dev/fd0 (I think that you do
not need to mount to format)

No, you restricted it.
The Linux Hardware HOWTO says:
5. Memory
All memory like DRAM, EDO and SDRAM can be used with Linux.
There is one thing you have to look at: normally the kernel is
not supporting more than 64 Mb of memory. When you add more
than 64 Mb of memory you have to add the following line to
your LILO configuration file.
append="mem=<number of Mb>M"
So, when you have 96 Mb of memory this should become
append="mem=96M"
Don't type a number higher than the number Mb you really have.
This can present unpredictable crashes.
Try it.

You can of course restrict Linux to use only 64 MB by saying "linux
mem=64M" at the lilo prompt, or add the following line to all kernel-
stanzas in lilo.conf: "append="mem=64M"". However, you will likely notice a
decrease in performance, as the remaining 32Megs can be used even if it can
not be cached. My Ali chipset can only cache up to 128M, but adding
another 64 still made my system a bit faster.

Not afaik.

I can now use the tape drive if I manually load the aic7xxx and st

But even though I have the 'alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx' line in
/etc/conf.modules, the module is not automatically loaded on re-boot.
Do I have to use '/sbin/mkinitrd' to generate a new ramdisk image?

this oyt by doing a "dmesg |less"), compile yet a new one that has the
"Boot offboard chipsets first support" option enabled." What is the
dmesg |less and where do I type this? And then do I recompile my 2.4.0-
test kernel again to get the "Boot offboard chipsets first support"?

think mandrake installs the grub boot loader. Do I just use the
drakeconfig gui to add my new kernel? And how or what do I do?

Subject: MS Internet keyboard Linux support for additional keys??
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 17:05:49 +0200
I've just bought an MS Internet keyboard to replace my crappy old one. The
new keyboard is quite nice and has some flashy additional keys "to add to
the Internet experience..." as MS propaganda would surely state....
I've tried the keys under Win98, and they work fine, but I spend most of
my time working under Linux (surprise!!). So now for the trick: getting
those extra keys to work under Linux.
I've fooled around with xmodmap and loadkeys, checked showkey and xev, but
somehow I can't get the buggers to work. Anyone ever tried and succeeded??
Tnx.
Roald.
