OK, here's the relevant lines from dmesg output:
...
tpqic02: Runtime config, $Revision: 0.4.1.5 $, $Date: 1994/10/29 02:46:13 $

I *guess* I have DMA enabled?

I had the same problem. An S3-Trio64/DX in a PII/LX setup.
At the time I was using XFree86 V3.2.n, Once v3.3.3.1 came out I was
able
to use the XF86_SVGA driver instead of the XF86_S3 driver and it all
worked.
I also have an S3-Trio64 at home in an older Pentuim motherboard. When I
upgraded KDE to 1.0 from an old 0.9 version the PC would hang when I
logged out of KDE, and went back to KDM (The KDE version of xdm). After
a lot of searching around I found someone saying that the S3 support
in the XF86_S3 driver was a bit suspect and KDM highlighted a bug. I
then cnanged over to using the XF86_SVGA (3.3.3.1) and the problem
was fixed.
So it depends upon a few things as to whether you use the XF86_S3 or
XF86_SVGA server with XFree86.

Every time I start up X Windows, it doesn't respond. I've looked into some
FAQs and found out that because I have a Microsoft Wheel Mouse (2 button
mouse with the scrolling wheel in the middle) I need to type the following
before starting X Windows:
mouseconfig --kickstart --device cua0
However, when I type that, X Windows still doesn't respond. Am I supposed to
install or configure my mouse a certain way?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry for not being specific. The blinking was slow and was due to the printer
recieving data. I did wait for the warmup cycle to be completed before
attempting to print. My printer works fine under win 98 (both as an okipage 6e
and as an hp 4).
I tried the above settings, it
still won't print.

I cannot get my SoundBlaster AWE64 PCI Soundcard to detect within
Mandrake Linux 6.0. When I run 'sndconfig' from the CLI, it correctly
asserts that I have an AWE64. However, it cannot probe the settings.
When I enter the correct settings manually (as reported by Win98), it
gives me an 'isapnp' message stating that it cannot allocate 8 bits of
IO at 02F8.
Here are my settings as reported by Win98:
AWE 64 - I/O 0220-022F IRQ 5 DMA 5, 1 MPU 0330-0331
Motorola Internal 56K ModemSurfer - I/O 02F8-02FF IRQ 3 COM2
Obviously, the problem is the modem. I cannot set up PPP services
either as a result.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do I set up an internal PNP modem that's NOT a winmodem in Linux? It

There is a log file that is created in /var/spool/fax for each job
received by lpd. Set your debugging really high in the fax script and
watch the log file with 'tail -f'.
Also, using /dev/null might create problems. If you create a bogus device
such as "/dev/efax" by 'touch /dev/efax', you can use that instead. (The
locking that occurs may cause problems when /dev/null is used).

In the Precision Insight instructions, it tells you to install the new
"xf86config" (note lack of capitals) which you should run as root. The
instructions also tell how to answer certain questions presented in
xf86config. After you do all that, you still might need to hand edit your
XF86Config (note capitals) file in /etc/X11. See some previous messages I
posted (search for "740" in this newsgroup).

I am having troubles getting efax going with lpr.
'fax test' talks to the modem (I 'm using internal USR on ttyS2 with
group 1 configuration)
'fax send' starts up the modem, dials and sends ok
I set up the spool directory with RedHat print tool to /dev/null
/var/spool/fax /usr/bin/faxlpr
I set a symbolic link from /usr/bin/faxlpr to /usr/bin/fax
I believe I have set up the spool directory with proper permissions
/var/spool/fax 777
when I try to print a fax 'lpr -Pfax -J<phone number> <file>' I don't
get any modem activity, and nothing shows when I do 'lpq'
'lpc' recognizes the fax queue (it reports status, can enable disable)
'lpr' works fine with my default DeskJet500 on lp0
Any ideas?

Try the X Server from Precision Insight ( http://www.precisioninsight.com ).
The file you want is named XFCom-i740-glibc-1.1.0-1.i386 located here:
ftp://ftp.precisioninsight.com/pub/pi/XFCom/XFCom-i740-glibc-1.1.0-1.i386.rpm
also get:
ftp://ftp.precisioninsight.com/pub/pi/XFCom/xf86config-glibc-1.1.0.i386.tgz
Follow the instructions after decompressing the .tgz file. The .rpm file
should install correctly. I had marginal success with the "automatic"
XF86Config created, and had to hand-edit some modelines.

It's easy to say this: RTFM
If you can't get a prompt try to boot from cdrom or something else.
Load your scsi driver and edit your lilo config file an switch the
linear mode on/off. LILO linear mode boots faster but doesn't run on
many systems. Read the LILO manual. Proceed in similar way to low level
configure the disk (fdisk) if you'll need to). Try to install LILO to a
floppy disk.
