The TNT's 2D is awful at those resolutions IMO. The V3's 2D is very good
though.

Or 3dfx Banshee, or Matrox G200 PCI. In fact, I recommend you the G200.

Hmm...this must be the other way around :) IMO the TNT's 2D quality isn't
good at all, but the V3's is nice, the G200's even better. The Banshee 2D
isn't too good either.

Neither I know if V3 works well with Linux, but I know that Matrox' cards
works very well.

> So, Viper or Voodoo, that's a question?

The G200 :)
I actually do recommend you the G200. Good (the best?) Linux support, the
best 2D. You what you're asking for :)Not so good 3D though.

> BTW, is Pentium 100 enough for these cards?

No, it's not.. both cards want more CPU horsepower, but okay, they do work
with a P100.

Hope this helps.

Only a single EIED/UDMA device per cable can be in operation at any one
time. There is no disconnect-reconnect as in SCSI which is currently
implemented.

    Hi All,

OK, I just got my spanking new SGI VW 540, and after perusing the
available SGI resources, I find that SCSI is not supported yet. Since
the adpater is the Qlogic 1080, I assume that is the target. I read,
however, that the 1080 is supported for linux.

    This is perplexing.

I have 2 questions to put me at ease, and to avoid the need for me to
buy an IDE drive to install Linux....

1) Is there a definitive reason why SCSI will not work, other than noone
has had a go? I am no expert(on SCSI) but a technical decscription would
be helpful, in case I can help cobble a solution together.

2) If there is a reason, how horrible is the solution likely to be?

If there is anyone from SGI reading this, some elucidation would
be nice, as I cannot *wait* to try this baby out!!

    Cheers

I have recently installed Slackware 4.0. I am aware that
the previous modem device
scheme produced two devices: /dev/cua* and /dev/ttyS* for
sending/recieving calls.
I installed slackware 4.0 from scratch, but ran a heavily
custom/upgraded slack3.4
before. I have a 33.6 PnP modem, which worked fine before,
using isapnptools, and
dialing using the /dev/cua2 device (COM3 assigned by
isapnptools). When I installed
slack4.0 /w a PnP kernel, I noticed that the kernel wasn't
recognising it, so I used
my previous isapnptools configuration. That seems to work
fine by assigning it
to 0x3E8 (COM3). I have set my com programs to use the
/dev/ttyS2 device, and it
works, and will even connect. But for some reason, the
messages are delayed about 20 seconds, which means there's a
40 second delay from when I enter a command to the modem and
get a response. This obviously makes it impossible for me
to set up a PPP
connection. I thought it might have had something to do
with shared interrupts, but have since ruled that out.
/dev/ttyS2 is the only device that will give me any response
at all.
I am clueless. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I think you might be in luck if you look at the video4linux2 pages.
Now there is some ATI BT819/829(I think, no sure) support, even a
capture
enabled program.

Hope this info was of some use for you. (If so mail me directly, 'cause
I have an ATI-TV board which is somewhere in the cellar)

I hear a lot of people suggesting to others that it will only cost $100 or
so to upgrade a Pentium or some such slower processor to a celeron.
However, that's not taking into account the fact that he'll probably need to
purchase a new case and memory as well. While it's probably a good idea to
do so, it'll definitely cost more than $100. And I know. :) I've been
thinking about upgrading my PPro 200 for some time now, but I don't want to
purchase a new computer just so I can have an AGP slot.

But, for a little over $100 a month (plus usage, and service
provider charges), ADSL can provide 7.1Mbps. A T1 is much
more expensive.

Let us go through this once again.

The V3 has the 16 bit limit in 3D.

In 2D one has the option of using 16bit, 24bit, or 32 bit.

Most of the reviews say that the V3 has 2D output on par with the
Matrox. Both are at the top.

How can I check DMAs? Not in /proc like interrupts and ioports?

I am looking for a stylus based computer and I am trying to figure out how
hard it will be to get a useable linux system running on one.

Has anyone had experience using linux on pen computers? I am mostly
worried about the interface to the X Window System: Do the touch-screens
on machines like the Fujitsu Stylistic 2300 emulate a PS/2 mouse or is
there another driver similar to the Wacom tablet? Are there virtual
keyboards for X?

Subject: Where is MAKE ???
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 19:58:13 -0000

I am trying to setup a network card on my computer, because i need it to
connect to the internet. I've tried it at first with a Mandrake 6, and then
with a RedHat 6.

I'm a begginner, and the only way to do so i've figured out with the how-to
needed to use the 'make' command. (make menuconfig).

But the bash shell tells me that it doesn't know that command, and 'man
make' gives the same result.

This file is supposed to be in usr/src/linux.

In mandrake 6, this directory doesn't even existe, and in the redhat distrib
it has a slitly differente name.

Anyway, I did a search on the hole Hard disk, with no results

Do I have to do something to install the MAKE commanfd, or is there an
utility, like XF86Setup for the video, that could help me install the
network card ?

Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 20:35:34 GMT

I'm running Redhat 5.2 on a Compaq Deskpro 350
Kernel 2.0.36 stock standard
128 Meg ram

I have a 4.3 Gig IDE drive working fine, and have just added a
AHA-2940UW SCSI adapter and a 9 Gig Seagate Barracuda drive to the
system

I did an insmod aix7xxx.o to install the scsi module it found the
controller and drive all normally.

I've managed to partition the drive and create the file systems.

My problem now comes in that after I copied about 2 gig's of data into
the partitions without any hassles I'm now getting the following
messages repeated every 30 seconds or so :

SCSI host 0 aborted (PID xxxxx) timed out - restarting
SCSI bus being reset for host 0 .....................................

Has anyone got any ideas on what is causing this?

Many thanks in advance
Warwick.

Subject: Re: Direct Install on Hardware RAID 5?
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 15:15:54 -0400

I contacted DPT about drivers for their PM2654U2 Raid controller for Red Hat
Linux 6.0. They sent me the following options:

Thank you for your recent inquiry concerning the PM2654U2 controller and
Linux. There is a driver for Red Hat 5.2 and its corresponding source code on
our Internet site. We also have a patch that will take the driver from the
Linux 2.0.36 kernel to the 2.2.5 kernel and its source code and a combined
source code for the 2.0.36 driver plus patch. In order to install Red Hat 6.0
you
would have to make your own boot disk. To do this you would have to install Red
Hat 5.2, upgrade the driver and source codes to the 2.2.5 kernel. Then you
could
make your Red hat 6.0 boot disk by reading the documentation in the /misc.src./

trees directory. The mkboot script is what you would want to look at.
Basically,
you would have to build a 2.2.5 kernel with support for the DPT controller via
the source code) and then use that to build a new boot disk. If this is too
much, we should have a bootable Red Hat 6.0 install disk available sometime
this
summer.

I'm still thinking of buying a DPT Raid controller. If anyone knows of a
hardware Raid controller card that is better, faster, and cheaper I'm open for
suggestions.

Subject: Re: sound prob (Opti 931)
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 20:10:35 GMT

Hi,

I also have the Opti931 sound card on my system. I've got it working with
the RH6.0 (2.2.5 and 2.2.7) without any problems. RH6.0 comes with a utility
sndconfig which starts the isapnp, sets the configuration parameters in
isapnp.conf, adds the entries in the conf.modules. I am not sure about the
init scripts in the slackware distribution.

Try these steps (before recompiling the kernel, make sure you have backup of
the old kernel)

1) Try recompiling the kernel with the following sound options (also install
the modules)
        sb - module
        mpu401 - modules
        mad16 - module
genering opl3 FM synthesizer - module

2) get the isapnp.conf file using the pnpdump. Uncomment the io, irq, dma
according to your windows configuration, including ACT Y
3) Add a line for isapnp in your init script before you load the module
4) Make entries for the sound modules in the /etc/conf.modules (refer
configuring the modules).

"OR"

follow the instructions in the following web page

http://www.physics.mun.ca/~jwoodfd/opti931.html

I've used these instructions with my earlier versions of RH and I had no
problems .

The only problem you would face is related to the volume (it is low).

Good luck.

While on the topic, does anyone know about Hayes Accura 56K modems
under Linux?

Since Hayes is now sold, prices are low and the quality of these modems
is very good. Anyway, they don't *appear* to be winmodems, but one
never really knows for sure.

Thanks, anyone.
