I just bought a SoundBlaster PCI64V for my linux box. The main chip on
this board is a es1373 chip. There were no drivers for es1373 but i tried
the es1371 driver and it works. But the sound quality is realy bad. When
I play sounds in Windows it is perfect but in linux it sounds terrible.
I've tried the no-hlt thing but it didnt improve the sound quality. What
to do?

One of my colleagues recently purchased a Dell Inspiron with a
15 in screen. We had a lot of trouble setting it up. First, we
could not use Fips2.0 to reduce the size of the Win 98 partition
because Dell had put some unmovable files at the end of the
partition, which could not be moved down by dfrag. (I seem
to remember there is a way around this, but I can't recall what
it is.) We used Partition Magic instead, and that worked. But
then we had a lot of trouble setting up X. My colleague had
found a web page with instructions, but I don't recall what it
was. (There are several other such web pages if you look.)
We finally got it to work, but in order to do so we had to
_downgrade_ the BIOS! We were not able to get his
PCMCIA ethernet card to work, and he had to go out of
town, so we will give it another try when he gets back.
Of course some or all of these problems might arise for
any other laptop. I've had good success with a Winbook.
When I bought it they were using a C&T video chip which
was covered by XFree. I decided to reinstall Windows 95
rather than try to use Fips, so I don't know if that would
work. But my ethernet card works fine.
Whatever you get, double check what the vendor provides
against any recommendations since the vendors change
their hardware frequently.
Of course if you get a laptop from a Linux platform provider
like VAResearch or Penguin, you won't have to worry about
these matters, but they tend to concentrate on high end
expensive machines. Still it is worth checking their
web pages.

Same questions as before:
-Which distribution?
-Kernel Version?
-Other devices attached?
-Mainboard?
-Bios-Version of Mainboard?
-Bios Version of 4416S?
I have Kernel 2.2.5, Asus P2B-DS with Bios 10.2 Beta, 4416S with 1.0g.
Runs perfectly.
At least, if I use the Suse 6.1 Setup. 6.0 doesnt recognize the 4416 on my
AHA7890. I think, the Kernel 2.2.x has great improvements in newer
SCSI-Adapter-Support. Any Kernel <2.2.x give me the same kernel-panic you
have...
So: fetch the SuSe 6.1, newest Bioses -> will work.

Not true.

True and both the Promise and on mobo EIDE controllers work that way.
>Promise cards have the the busmaster drivers for
>DOS / Win3.xx already in their BIOS...
Not true.
The efficacious use of DMA/busmastering REQUIRES the presence of a
multitasking kernel and therefore NO advantage can be accrued until W9X or
NT4 is loaded and using their respective drivers. This is true for any OS
and also any DMA/busmastering device...SCSI, NIC....
DMA/busmastering saves the CPU for doing something useful during the actual
I/O. No multitasking environment then no advantage.
There may be a small data transfer rate advantage for the Promise and some
mobo BIOSs that actually run UDMA mode in the BIOS but with no CPU usage
advantage since the processor burns a tight loop duing the I/O instead on
actually doing the I/O. The fastest current UDMA66 HDs only sustain about
21MB/sec. and PIO4 does 15MB/sec. I suspect that the difference in boot
time is negligible.

Subject: Re: best sound card
Date: 1 Jul 1999 12:22:20 GMT
Hi Jeremy,
Which soundcard seems to be best for Linux is a matter of your needs (and
your wallet, too). Any Creative Labs Soundblaster 16/32/64/128 will work fine,
but there are more, like Gravis- or Yamaha-Cards.
I own a Soundblaster AWE32 Wavetable card and I'm very happy with it, exept for
some plug-and-play troubles I had when I first installed and configured it.
But this should not scare you from buying a Creative Labs card because nowadays
plug-and-play is not so much trouble anymore (thanks to several pnp-tools).
Be careful with so-called "Soundblaster clones" or "Soundblaster compatible"
equipment, the money you save on these cards may lead you to a quite tedious
installation procedure, or the card may even fail completely to be used with
Linux...
With kernels < 2.2.x you can use the infamous rplayd for sound, with kernels
>= 2.2.x you can use the OSS support which is part of the kernel source now.
This is, of course, free of charge.
However, if you're going to use some exotic sound equipment or high end cards
you may have to purchase a more complete license of OSS (Open Sound System)
from http://www.opensound.com . You can download an evaluation copy of OSS
for free and do some testing.
Some Linux distributions (like S.u.S.E.) come with a free copy of OSS without
any shareware restrictions.

NO! The Expert sustains about 19MB/sec. and UDMA33 mode is more than fast
enough to handle that at full speed. See the Ultra66 review at

Nope.

Where exactly? I looked and couldn't find it.
The mobo's UDMA33 mode will give equivalent performance.

I am attempting to install RedHat 6.0 on my computer.
The problem is when the Install program asks for the cd,
i put the cd in, and then the install program presents me with a list of
CDROM drives. Of course, my Creative Labs CD120 8 speed drive is not on the
list.
I have tried using the "linux hdc=cdrom" at the boot prompt.
This does not work. It shouldnt, as my cdrom is on a proprietary card,
with a base of 0x180, and on interrupt 11.
Any help will be appreciated, especially if someone could tell me if i can
hook up my particular cdrom drive directly to one of the ide controllers on
my system. Else, i am going to have to buy a Linux-compatible cd rom
drive...
Thanks in advance

I'm looking for a device that will plug into a PCI slot on an intel

An example of something similar to what I'm looking for is at:

but it only connects to the parallel port, and isn't supported under

Does anyone have any ideas?
