Hello,
maybe you can try XF86Setup to configure your system, including the
mouse., it worked for me.

Hello Jim,
Go to DOS and just type 'fdisk /mbr' and the master boot record should be
restored.

Corel's been heavily into Wine. Drunk perhaps? (joke)

Linux does have a long way util it can pass the "mother" test, i.e. "but
can my mother use it?"

I believe that it'll take some time before it'll become a rival desktop
OS, but I'm sure it will happen.

I don't think that linux (or any other system) supports SMP on
X86 non-Intel systems. Intel concurrents created their own
SMP standard (supposedly more open) but no MB maker implemented
it :-(

Recently picked up a Digital Celebris 590 at a used parts sale. It appears
to have on board SCSI and definitely can accommodate dual processors
(previous owner had a single pentium 90 installed). I'd like to put dual
P90s or 100s on board and fire up Linux, but I don't have any doco about the
box/jumper settings. Don't want to frag the box if I can help it. Can
anyone help point me in the right direction?

If you think that you had privacy before this, boy you live in a
bubble. Look at cell phones, ISPs, Credit card companies, Banks.

Cell phone companies can tell what block you are standing on and what
you are saying. This info is accessible by police.

ISP companies can log every email that you send out and where you
visit on the net.

Credit card companies have logs of what you buy and where you buy it.
They can sell this to other companies

Banks are in the same situation as credit card companies, especially
if you have debit card access.
Privacy is a nonissue. It is more of can you accept that this is
there.

most likely you'll find your answer there.
Now, again (for the last time I hope) most graphics card problems, will be
resolved using the newest XFree86 (from www.xfree86.org). the SiS 6326
(which I have too - AGP) is supported in XFree86 3.3.3.1 . RedHat 5.2 comes
with 3.2 .
that's all.

Well, not everybody. I'm pretty new to Linux (7 months), but my first
distribution was/is Slackware, and I love it. After I began to know
somewhat my ways around, I also tested other distributions, i.e. RedHat
and Debian - and I've come back to Slackware every time. Yes, it's still
Linux, but nonetheless it doesn't feel the same!
Then again, I was the 'tweak-it' kind even before having Linux.

Subject: Re: Modem and PPP config???
Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 13:26:45 +0000

Generic info for RH 5.2. Assumption: you installed PPP.
===================================================================
RH puts ppp scripts in /usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5
Copy ppp-on, ppp-on-dialer, options to /etc/ppp.
BTW:I have copied /dev/null to options.
These need to be made execuitable. Execute chmod 755 on ppp-on
and ppp-on-dialer
===================================================================
Modify ppp-on by editing the following:
TELEPHONE, ACCOUNT, PASSWORD
==================================================================
For exec command. put in correct device probably
cua1 (for RH5.2) and modem speed
===================================================================
Edit /etc/resolv.conf and put in ISP nameserver given you by your
ISP.
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
You usually get two from your isp.
====================================================================
execute ppp-on & and monitor logs with
tail -f /var/log/messages.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OR:
Control Pannel: Modem configuration.  Select
correct device. (used in ppp-on script)
===================================================================
Control Pannel: Network Configurator: Routing: Defaults blank
PPP0 will use this so needs a blank here.
===================================================================
Network Configurator: Names: insert ISP
nameserver addresses.
===================================================================
System Configurator: PPP/SLIP/PLIP:  Configurations, Add
Fill in Hardware, Communication. Assumes PAP not
required - If things do not work check with ISP.
==================================================================
Save quit. Verify /etc/resolv.conf has your ISP
addresses.
==================================================================
The linuxconf sets up most things but does not
setup the ppp-on script - that must be done by hand.
==================================================================
Testing:
cd /etc/ppp
execute ppp-on
Ping locally between your network machines to insure your ok.
Ping some net address by ip number like 10.220.10.120. Once ppp
is connected.
Verify your name server working, ping boston.com or do an
nslookup microsoft.com
When not dialed in ping someother box locally by name
to insure yor local resolution is working say if
done by the /etc/hosts and /etc/lmhosts.
=============================================================
If things do not work turn on debugging or up the level of
debugging. Edit the scripts and put debug 7 in there.
For LCP errors two common causes are the ISP is not responding
to you - he's down or you and the ISP are out of sync on PAP.

  Yes, I have 486DX 33, 8M RAM 200 MB HD running RH 4.0 for 2+ years
with X/fvwm/xdm running. It runs Netscape 3.XX over 28K modem with somewhat
good performance (sometimes much faster than through my corporate firewall
;-)).
I've used it for some light programming C++/Tcl/Tk, but the disk space really
limits.
It takes about 1 hour to rebuild kernell.. So it deppends what are you going
to use it
for.

Using a FS on a tape is not that new. It is mainly used to create a bootable
FS though (Unix workstations) since you can, for instance, not just delete
a file on a tape like on a harddisk, so as a backup solution ... no.

I wrote something that finally calls cpio; cannot tell what taper uses but
personally I would stay away from anything that is not readable by tar or
cpio. In case of an catastrophe you might have some problem else since the
backup programme will be gone too of course.

Cheers,
Juergen

Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 21:03:51 GMT

I'm trying to get a Digiboard PC/16em board to work with my system.

I'm using the 2.2.2 kernel, with the "Digiboard Intelligent Async Support"
driver enabled.

I put the line
  append="digiepca=E,PC/Xem,D,16,324,A0000"
into my /etc/lilo.conf file.

The third line from my boot.log for the subsequent reboot is:

PC/Xx: Added board 0, PC/Xem 16 ports at 0x0324 base 0x0A0000

I used the digiConfig program downloaded from ftp.dgii.com to set up the
/dev/ttyD* device entries.

But now, whenever I try something like:
  echo "Hi" > /dev/ttyD15
All I get back is
  /dev/ttyD15: No such device.

ls -l ttyD15
comes back with
crw-rw-rw-   1 root     root      23,   15 Mar 12 15:43 /dev/ttyD15

So, obviously, the device node exists.

My question is: what am I doing wrong, and how can I fix it?

Thanks!

the kernel is only one bit - redhat is the complete system, the kernel is
the program (which redhat didn't write) which talks directly to the
hardware.

as for upgrading redhat, simply insert the install disk as if you were
installing - one of the first questions asked is if you want to do an
actual install, or upgrade.
