We have purchased the raid controller and had minor problems with
redHat 5.2 ...(you have to run a moddpt command during install before
the make boot disk section. It finally was installed, however I had
problems activating Multiprocessing, or recompiling the kernel for that
matter and have the machine boot up again.
I have not been succesful in making the 2.2.5 kernel working...I think
there is a bug...Please put pressure on DPT to relase the 2.2.5 module.
I am not so sure they are really supporting this stuff.... their tech
support is useless, they told me that "since most linux users are
programmers, we can figure this ""stuff" our selves.)
Suggestion: If you need a working machine now...by a supported mylex
card. or an older dpt card....otherwise you are in for some fun!

A few times an evening my speakers give off an incredibly loud cracking

anyone tell me what might be causing it? I have a lot of hardware on

Well, perhaps ... I have a couple of the DEC tulip cards on my machines.
1. One box is an Cyrix-based system running RedHat 5.1 with a Netgear
model FA310TX-C6
NIC. This board has a DEC 21140 chipset onboard, runs 10/100Mb. I got
this one in 1998,
and it has always run flawlessly. I liked this one so well, that I
purchased the same brand/model for my
new system (see 2)
2. The other box is an Intel Celeron system dual booting RedHat 5.2 and M$
WinNT 4.0
This box also has a Netgear model FA310TX-D1 NIC which now has a clone
of the DEC 21140
chipset, called a "LiteOn" and it didn't work as well under RHL 5.2.
I eventually downloaded
the latest driver from Donald becker's site
(http://cesdis1.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.html)
and I recall it was version 0.89Q, since the newer DEC tulip-based
clones had some subtle
differences, requiring driver changes.
Are you sure that both of your NICs have DEC 21140 chipsets and not one of
the clones
like the LiteOn or ASIX? If you have a Netgear, then you can get a
driver update from their website
at http://netgear.baynetworks.com/support/.
The Donald Becker website will probably be of more help than anything I
suggest. FWIW, he is
the author of most Linux/FreeBSD NIC drivers.

I'm considering getting a new machine. I'll be networking it with my
current (old) machine. Anyway, I ran across a Web site for The Computer
Underground. I did some preliminary pricing and a dual PIII/450Hz with
128M ram, 20Gb HD, and "the usual peripherals" costed out to around
$2,100. A similiar from Penquin Computing costs about $2,300. I looked
at VA Research's Web site, but they were much higher (they didn't seem
to have this "small" a system - SCSI HD's are EXPENSIVE!).
I looked at some other sites, but TCU seemed to be the least expensive.
Now the question. Has anyone out there actually gotten a machine from
them? What did you think? Was it as good as it seems?
Any feedback gratefully received,

I have been talking to a person at Alps. At present, there is not a
driver for the Alps printers. They use their own language (RGL).
However, he indicated that they plan to release the specs to RGL
sometime this month (July 1999). He also said that another company
was planning on releasing a commercial driver. The web address for
the other company is http://www.easysw.com . They apparently make
printer drivers for a number of UNIX systems and printers. I don't
know anything more about them.
If they do release the specs, I plan to see if I might be able to create
a filter/driver/whatever which would work. However, I don't have an
Alps printer, so I wouldn't be able to test it. Then why write one?
Because I'm impressed by what I've heard, and if I think that I can
write a driver for it, I'll go ahead and purchase one. Assuming I haven't
blown all my $$ on a new system.

I will agree strongly with "well engineered." My Inspiron 3000 has been
rugged, quiet, and perfectly reliable.
Regarding bleeding edge, that problem also exists with other laptop
manufacturers. The hardware is not built from commodity parts as are many
desktops, and worse there is considerable pressure to pack in more features,
longer battery life, lighter weight, ... thus lots of fiddling with the
internal architecture. The whole mainstream laptop industry could be called
bleeding edge. PCMCIA cards are another constant challenge to keep up with.
Nevertheless the Linux community rises to the occasion. I was recently
amazed at how little work it took to make my Inspiron run Linux RH6 with an
external SCSI hard drive holding the root directory. Didn't have to
recompile anything, and RH's auto configuration figured out all of the
hardware except for sound. (I did have to get a patched installer diskette
to get going, since the PCMCIA controller chip was not detected correctly.
Easy to find that patch, because Linux people share their tribulations and
triumphs :^) .)
Given the number of Inspirons that Dell sells, and the number of people
trying to make Linux work on them, I would not hesitate to buy one to use
with Linux. So maybe you can't run the most accelerated X server today, and
maybe the sound will require fiddling. Workarounds will appear early and in
a couple of months after a new model is around there will inevitably be
fuller support from newer kernels and drivers.

Rackmounts and racks will cost several times more than using $35 beige

Its certainly not space efficient though.

I used to have an ATAPI CD-ROM working fine on /dev/hda. Recently I
bought a Mitsumi CD writer and plugged it into the second IDE slot i.e.
/dev/hdc.
After that I couldn't access hda anymore - hdc was working fine, though
(I didn't try writing - only reading).
The same setup works *fine* under NT. I tried to swap the CD drives
(ide0<-->ide1), plugged both on only one IDE slot (yes, I minded
Master/Slave).
I never managed to make *both* drives work at the same time...
I read the CDROM-Howto, but it couldn't help me either.
Am I missing something important here?
TIA,
Sini

You can use the Rage Fury, it is based on the Mach64 chipset, as in
the Xpert 98 which I use fine. It would probably be worth getting a
TNT2 for games since the OpenGL support on the Mach64 is crummy.

salam
i got the following problem:
2 ethernetcards:
1. 3com509
2. de220 isa (NE2000comp)
Nr.1 functions as eth0 to the outside,
Nr.2 functions as eth1 to the inside.
(masquerading)
my suse detects the 3com automatically
and fixes her to io=0x300 and irq 10
the second i configure manually with io=0x320 and irq 5
and everything works fine
but: after every reboot linux searches after nr.1 and tells me something
about wrong io adress
the second works fine
more tips:
1. when i try to configure the 3com manually (with the values from the
automatic detection), always an error merssage occurs
2. both cards are in /etc/conf.modules with the alias and their io
adresses
what is the answer
bye & thankyou

Subject: Trouble with Mitsumi CD-writer
Date: 03 Jul 1999 03:06:17 +0200
I'm having difficulty with getting cdrecord to work with my Mitsumi CR-4802TE.
I have the proper SCSI emulation compiled in my kernel. I can mount the drive
and read from it. If I do a 'cdrecord -scanbus', here is the output:
[root@sparky linux]# cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord release 1.6 Copyright (C) 1995-1998 Jrg Schilling
scsibus0:
0) 'MITSUMI ' 'CR-4802TE ' '1.9D' Removable CD-ROM
1) 'LITEON ' 'CD-ROM LTN301 ' 'MP12' Removable CD-ROM
2) *
3) *
The problem comes when I try to test the drive as in the CD-Writing HOW-TO with
the following command:
[root@sparky linux]# cdrecord -eject -device /dev/scd0
Cdrecord release 1.6 Copyright (C) 1995-1998 Jrg Schilling
WARNING: device not valid, trying to use default target...
scsidev: 'ice'
scsibus: 0 target: 6 lun: 0
cdrecord: Cannot do inquiry for CD-Recorder.
cdrecord: Success. test unit ready: scsi sendcmd: fatal error
CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00
cmd finished after 0.000s timeout 40s
Does anyone have any ideas about what is happening here? I looked in Deja, and
someone who was having a similar problem solved it by upgrading their kernel from
2.0.34 to 2.0.36. That is not the problem here. I'm using cdrecord 1.6 on the
2.2.5 kernel.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks a lot,
Aaron Ginn

salam
habe folgendes problem:
2 Netwerkkarten:
1. 3com509
2. de220 isa (NE2000komp)
Nr.1 fungiert als eth0 nach draussen,
Nr.2 fungiert als eth1 nach innen.
bei der installation erkennt yast die 3com automatisch
und fixiert sie auf io=0x300 bzw. Irq 10
die zweite konfiguriere ich manuell mit io=0x320 bzw. irq 5
danach laeuft alles blendend
ciao
