I have a TapeStor3200 connected to a Connor High Speed FDC at IRQ-6,
DMA-2 and I/O BASE at 0x0370. My floppy A: is on system controller at
0x03f?. No command I issue gets any response other than "/dev/xxxx" -
no such device.

How do I tell Linux the address of the secondary FDC?

Hello guys, I have just recently upgraded to RedHat 6.0, and now with
kppp, the modem dials fine, and displays the message logging on to
network, and then it does and immediate disconnect followed by a
redial.... I also have a problem using netcfg, it just hangs there, and
does nothing... Any help would greatly be appreciated....

Thanks

My Linux (RedHat v6.0 /w v2.2.10 kernel) box has 2 NICs, a PCI card and a
ISA card. I'm interested in determing the relative CPU time consumed by
each card. Is there a way to view the CPU time used in handling the
packets on a particular Ethernet interface?

Thank you.

Subject: Problem with Promise Ultra33 and Linux
Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 00:14:04 +0800

Hi all,

I face to a problem with ultra33 while installing redhat linux 6.0

My machine have following specifiaction:

2 harddisk, named HD1(master) and HD2 (slave), both are connected with
ultra33 channel 1

Andalso , 1 cdrom, connected to original motherboard, as secondary
master.

The machine is a pentium 200 mmx based

While I installing the linux, I first make a bootdisk, and then change
the boot sequence as "A, C,

SCSI", since dthe ultra33 sound as a SCSI

Then the LILO boot, follow the instruction to install.

I wish to install linux to HD2 with all space and leave HD1 as
windows98. So I use fdisk to delete

all partation in HD2.

I choose "workstation" and follow the instruction again, it is OK to
detect HD2 and use the linux

fdisk.

It is OK to set video, printer and mice. After that, the system reboot.

When the system reboot, the computer show a message:

"LI" then the system halt.

When I try to load linux with the bootdisk, created during installation,
It can load the LILO, but after

detecting the Ultra33 and harddisk, it show a error message and then
system halt.

During installation, Linux consider HD1 as "hde" and HD2 as "hdf", and
the CDROM as "hdc"

Promise claim ultra33 work with kernal of redhat 6.0

I also try to install Linux using motherboard IDE primary channel
harddisk connecting and using

above procedure without trouble, so I consider the problem is in
Ultra33. But I don't want to use

motherboard channel since I have other tapedrive and CD-R. What wrong
with that and any

possible solution?

Thank.

Anyone have any success configuring Linux (RedHat 6.0) to use an

If so, what package did you use to connect and control the UPS ?

I specifically want to be able to shut down my server when the power fails.

Subject: WDC313000 drive, only bios sees it.

Unrot13 this;
Reply to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Got a weird one here folks. I run a WDC43000 as the primary drive on a
TYAN S1590S mobo, and it works in mode 4 if its set for UDMA66, but uses
DMA when the 'wdata66.exe' utility has been run to toggle its speed
down to UDMA33.

I've had an elderly WDC-280 I've been using for swap that I figured I
could switch out for this one after setting the BIOS for the secondary
slave to LBA mode just like the 4.3 gigger is set at.

So I do a shutdown and switch the drives, fixing the bios on the reboot
for LBA on that drive port.

On reboot, the drive is seen by the bios as 'LBA,Mode 4,13,xxx,xxx,xxx
bytes', so I figure I'm home free, all I have to do is switch the drive
to UDMA33 with the dos utility, wdata66.exe. WRONG!

The drive is not findable by any of the utils on the supplied floppy,
not just by wdata66.exe.

So, the bios finds it ok. Why can't any of the other utils? I put the
WDC-280 back in without even changing the bios back, and linux didn't
complain on the reboot so I assume its fine by linux.

Suggestions tried up to and including quarter sticks of Alfreds finest
at this point, but I can't think the drive is bad if the bios can see it
just fine. Although it does vibrate quite a bit more than the 80
megger, or the 4 gigger I'm booting linux from. I could take it back
based on those 2 items I suppose, but the troubleshooter in me wants to
know whats munged.

Cheers, Gene

Each ISP have their own Domain Name and IP address
Check to see what is the Domain name and its IP address (not primary or sec
DNS)
enter it in your hosts files.....for ex. 165.21.10.1 merlion.singnet.com.sg
(for Singapore Singnet ISP)....

Jeremy,

If your sound card is PNP, try pnpdump 2>/etc/isapnp.conf (if you don't
already have a file by that name). As root, Use a text editor to
unremark the Irq's, dma's and I/O BASE from your windoze Device Manager,
or whatever other system you boot.

Then, mount the driver for your card, shutdown, and restart. Mine
worked; hope yours does also.

Or if the laptop has a PCMCIA card slot, you can find someone with a
network and a PCMCIA network card, plug in the laptop, and do an FTP
install of just about any kind of Linux you want. Since you won't
be running X, you *might* be able to fit it in 200Mb. I'm not sure -
I know I can fit an install with X into a little under 300Mb.

There are actually two different block sizes for tape drives. One, the
hardware blocking factor, is set in the driver by the 'mt setblk' command.
The other, the software blocking factor that is imposed by 'tar' and 'dump'.
Many commercial UNIX implementations use a hardware block size of
10240. Linux defaults to 1024. Try setting 'mt setblk 10240' and see if
it improves the transfer rate.

Thanks, works a treat, I had to put in in .xsession for WindowMaker, why,
I don't know, but it works.

Point taken. I didn't know that about the FPUs being the same. In that
case, I would guess the Celeron would win out in FP-intensive tasks
because of the higher clock rage (488 vs. 400), while the Pentium would
win in memory-intensive tasks (searches).

Sound reasonable, or am I way off?
