I just installed suse 6.4 on my PC and I didn't find any working
configuration for my video card
I 'm using XF86config.
I tryed all possibilities ( with XF86_SVGA & XF86VGA16 ) each time i start X
I got a Black screen
I tryed also XF_86_S3 but it is not recognised .

Does anyone have any experience with this card ?
Are their many models of such card ?
Should I buy another video card to use linux ?

Thanks.

According to linux.com, it is usable under 2.2.14 and will burn
cd pretty fast.

Let me ask you this, I was looking at the plextor, Sony Spressa 8/4/32, and
the Yamaha 8/4/24, why did you choose the plextor? The three seem to be
pretty good.

Subject: ZIP drive partition problem
Date: 11 Apr 2000 21:13:11 GMT

I just installed a ZIP drive, 100MB internal ATAPI, in a system, and
I'm having an interesting problem. After I booted, I couldn't find the
partition table on any of my existing ZIP media.

My first thought was that the media might be bad. I wrote a new
partition table on a spare media, made a file system, write to it,
unmounted, pulled it out, put it back, mounted it... and it worked fine.
So that seems to let the hardware out. I took a disk which had been used
as a 100MB tape, with a backup just written as root to /dev/hdd. I was
able to read that just fine.

I was getting pretty sure that I really had erased my existing disks,
so I put them in another ZIP drive on another system. I have another
100MB internal ATAPI, a parallel 100, and an external SCSI 100. Lo and
behold the disks I wrote on old drives were all okay, the disk with a
partition table written on the new drive was not readable, and the disk
with the backup was perfectly readable on any drive. Since the backup
was a cpio with CRC on each file, I'm sure the data was read correctly.,
and I printed a table of contents which was correct.

Is there some magic which tells the system where to find the partition
table or some such? Any ideas at all? If it helps, the unit is now made
under license by Panasonic, and it's hdb on the new system, due to cable
problems, this is an 11 bay tower, and the only free cable drop was
there, until I get another cable made up.

I checked master and slave settings, and the hda drive is okay, the
physical end to end read was okay, so I think the hardware is fine. I
also tried a 2.2.14, 2.2.15pre14, 2.3.48 and 2.3.99pre3kernel boot to
see if that made any difference. It didn't, all worked the same. Since
my kernels work on other systems, and read the physical sectors
correctly, I suspect a setup trick on this drive.

I am now sort of out of ideas, unless someone has a clear idea of
what's happening.

OK then try using "pump" to initialize the card. That worked for
me once when nothing else would. 6.2 should already have it
installed.

>Pump fails. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup uses pump and
that's what fails on DHCP.
If I set a fixed IP for my workstation, the network comes up.

This works fine with kernel 2.0.36. It fails on kernel 2.2.x. It
seems that something is fundamentally different in the handling
of DHCP with kernel 2.2.x. It just won't come up on DHCP.

Any other ideas?

I guess I would try recompiling the kernel with the card's module
and some added network options and hope they somehow help <shrug>

read www.slashdot.org :) there's an announcement of some kind about
this very thing today.

there's a company deliviring cross platform driver development kits.
the main problem is : speed.
also maybe the fact that it's so simple, a newbie can write a driver
using the thing. would you want drivers written by newbies ? :)

anyways, for your idea .. these drivers would have to be emulated
somehow ... i think the overhead this would cause would be
enormous. because you would have to first emulate the binary
code from the driver, and translate it into linuxlike system calls.

it would definately be a lot slower than drivers you are experiencing
today in linux.

After receviving a few responses and making another attempt to ocnfigure XFree
4.0 I found the problem I was having. After starting the X my mouse failed to
move at all, just this little cursor in the middle of the screen.

So I jumped back to the screen I started X with (CTRL+ALT+F1) and read the info
there, which I had checked before but not carefully enough. It said I was using
a Logitech 2 button mouse. With was correct. But every time I checked it the
same thing showed. It never changed. I found this weird, and I knew that I was
pointing (at the time) to some non Logitech procotol.

When I took a look through the 'man XF86Config; page the first thing you go
through is a list of all the XF86Config files, or rather where the server checks
for those files. So I ran 'find | grep XF86Confi*' I choose that instead of
locate to properly search the files, in case locate wasn't updated. It came back
with a XF86Config file in another location where the server checks, my /root. I
renamed that file, so the only XF86Config file my server could look at was the
one I was editing in /etc/X11 and then tried to start up the X server.

It crashed pointing to some parse errors, which was a good sign. Is was now
reading a different XF86Config. I went in and fixed the errors. One I had
forgotten quotations and the other was a spelling error. After fixing those my X
server started jsut fine and my mouse works. I still have to get the scroll to
work, but all three buttons work.

But the thing that threw, and had keep me from looking at the existence of other
XF86Config files was my earlier attempt to get X running. I had edited
/etc/X11/XF86Config to include the correct HorSync and VerSync options for my
monitor, and after editing those the X Server had started up, so it was reading
from that file. So what I learned last night is the XFREE 4.0 seems to read
from any XF86Config file on the machine, and my parsed and used the
/root/XF86Config file I had as a primary file and read others after it. So while
what I had been trying was right, it wasn't being read by the server, and
implemented.

Anyway, I just wanted people to know about that problem in case the same thing
was happening to someone else.

Thanks for the suggestions.

VMWare does it. You can watch DVD's through Windows running in VMWare on
Linux.

had this happen. I knew the partition numbers from a printout, but windows
would not see the disk. fdisk had the partition numbers up around 650gb,
on a 18gb disk. Fixed, wrote, and Linux would not mount it. Gave errors of
some sort. Booted to windows and window saw it. All good.

if you _need_ the partition and don't know your old partition numbers, you
can use "dd" to strip the disk at lowlevel, even if its unmounted. Then,
compare what you see with whatever the front of a vfat partition looks
like.

Make sure that in linuxconf, the correct module is being loaded by
