Stop gpm before starting X. I don't know why the whole system hangs
when gpm is running, but I' having the same problems and that trick seems

I may be off base, it has been a while since I played with cdrecord. Are
you sure that you are specifying the device correctly.
IIRC, the cdrecord works off <scsihostid>:<scsiid>[:<LUN>] such as 0:4
for when the CD-R is on SCSI-id 4 on host 0.
I do not have a linux box here at the moment, but have a look at the man
for cdrecord and double check your device specification.

The Celeron 300A at 450 does very well, but the K6-III is slightly
better.

That's because your root filesystem is on the ramdisk.

RedHat5.2. I'd appreciate a rundown on what/how you're setup to get cdrecord
to RW at all.

No false information, personal experience.
The close-to-BIOS benchmark H2bench shows a interface transfer rate of
31 MB/s for my Promise Ultra 33 controller in DOS-mode.
If I use the onboard controller of my P5A, it shows "IBM DJNA 37910,
UDMA" while booting. But the measured interface transfer rate is only
14.5 MB/s, so there is *no real UDMA support* ! The Ali EIDE-controller
runs in PIO4 !

I have just installed RH5.2, no real problems... except getting the X server
to recognize my video card. I have Read the Fine Manuals, and am still
unable to find the answer (now I AM new to LINUX, and was kinda hoping it
would install abd be done...)
If this has already been covered in this news group, my appologies in

items). I presently have:
nVIDIA RIVA TNT 16MB 3D AGP Graphics Accelerator
My monitor is not on the list of supported devices (Mitsubishi). The specs
in the book say:
Horizonal scan freq range: 30-96 KHz
Vertical scan freq range: 50-160 Hz
Max Resolution: 1600x1200 @ 75Hz
If anybody can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate

You will have to get a latter version X to run that card
It has only just come out !!!

Problem is for the cost of a k6-3 you can get a celeron dual which blows past

Unrot13 this;
Reply to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Gene Heskett sends Greetings to dlyseng ;
I bought one of those too. The card has more addresses than is compiled
into aha1542.
I've heard of others using the stock compile, and not using the
available addresses of 0x330 and 0x334 that are compiled in.
However, I solved the problem here by adding 0x230 and 0x234 to the
MAXBOARDS arrays in aha1542.c, and recompiling. It now installs during
boot with a 'modprobe aha1542' in conf.modules.
Don't forget that you will now have 4 items to initialize in any array
useing MAXBOARDS as the variable, so there are about 6 or so lines of
code to diddle all told, if you choose this route. I also chose the
maximum value in the DMA_SPEED(MAXBOARDS) array, but its not a barn
burner with an 810 meg quantum attached.
It also could be that 0x130 *is* busy, and you might be able to use
0x230 without any problems.
> I have an adaptec aha1540cf with the bios disabled.
Why?
Put it back into service. It will not install itself if the attached
media is not bootable *and* there is another bootable device abvailable.

You can 'cat /proc/ioports' to see that. ISTR 0x130 was busy on my
system at one time, but isn't now. I've no idea what I changed to
affect that. Neubie here too.

it seems that the HP 1100 Laser printer is OK for Linux.
It comes with 2MB ram installed (the docs say that).
Are 2MB enough for normal (home) use ?

There are many motherboard (Do you have an VIA MVP3 chipset and an
award bios?) out there with a buggy bios.
Try to get a BIOS-upgrade, this worked for me!
(I know about EPOX- and NMC-boards with VIA MVP3, for these boards
there are new bios-versions solving the problem!)
Hope this helps...

Subject: Linking PCI to IRQ ????
Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 15:07:20 +0200
Hi,
I can see it but I cannot get to it!
I have a PCI sound card that I cannot get to work.
The problem is it cannot find anything at the stated IO-port or IRQ
Looking at '/proc/interrupts' this is logical since IRQ 5 is not there
at all.
If I do a 'lspci -vv' it clearly states the bus 0:06.0 and the name,
function, IO-base and it also points out that 'pin A is connected to IRQ
5'
Now there is just one small thing (hopefully) to activate an IRQ to that
PCI bus
The problem is I have absolutely no idea how to do this so any
suggestions, or docs would be highly appreciated.

Try recompiling your kernel, and place the Samba driver IN THE KERNEL (not
as a module). That's reputed to solve some problems like the one you're
reporting.

OS/2 was never rewritten to be MS free, I know for fact that it didn't
happen and it just doesn't make sense. It would be far cheaper to buy
the rights from MS and if you couldn't buy them then why would you
reimplement the same shortcomings in your reimplementation? Why not
modernize the parts your reimplement? It took until the current server
edition to fix HPFS (long after OS/2 doesn't even matter in the
marketplace) Then PM? If they were going to reimplement it MS free,
some design work to avoid using shared memory so much would have been
ideal, especially since that is one of the bigger reasons WPOS failed...
