I've got Linux 2.4.3 installed on an AMD760 motherboard in my main box.
Works like a champ.
Most (all?) AMD760 motherboards out there are hybrid motherboards--an
AMD761 Northbridge paired with a VIA 686B Southbridge. You'll need to
enable AGP support for the Irongate chipset, and you'll probably have to
load the AGP driver with agp_try_unsupported=1. No worries though, it's
quite stable.
The rest of the setup is VIA-centric. Just get the system BIOS patched
up to get rid of the VIA 686B IDE DMA bug, and enable VIA IDE support.
Also, if you are using an aic7000 family SCSI controller, make sure you
pass "aic7xxx=no_probe" to the aic7xxx driver--otherwise, the aic7xxx
driver is liable to lock the system hard scanning for EISA/VLB SCSI
controllers. This gave me major headaches for a while.

I've been using xine 0.37 from http://xine.sourceforge.net and adding in
a CSS decryption plugin from http://members.nbci.com/captain_css/
xine has considerably better playback quality than the current
OMS (linuxvideo.org) player, mainly because it has better mpeg2 sync.
The OMS player is usable but suffers from jerky stop-n-go video
playback.

Kind of off subject, but I'd consider getting a newer version of RH if
at all possible. IIRC, one of the older versions (maybe it was 6.1) had
some security flaws in the stock kernel that was shipped. Of course, if
you roll your own bleeding edge kernel, this won't necessarily apply.

Hi,
I have a Pcmcia NIC based on the AX88190 chipset - it's branded Sitecom, but
uses the same chipset as the Billionton Lna100, Unex MD011, and others.
This chip is currently unsupported by pcnet_cs, but a driver exists from the
manufacturer that works with the 2.2.x kernels.
Unfortunately, it doesn't compile with a 2.4.x kernel (RH 7.1 or SuSE 7.1
for what I tried).
I am looking for some help on this matter - I really need a 2.4 kernel, and
a network card !
Thanks.

Hello all,
I'm having trouble getting kernel support for my new soundcard labeled

Run XConfigurator and select the resolution(s) you wish to use.

Is there anyway to bind two network cards together under Linux to
create a redundant connection to a switch? If one of the cards fails
the other one takes over, reducing the link from 200Mb to 100Mb.
I am trying to keep this as simple as possible. I understand the ideal
solution would be by using a cluster but I am only interested in doing
this on a single machine. I know for a fact this can be done under NT.
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks

What is the VIA 686B IDE DMA bug? I have this chipset and it enables

That's total nonsense. You've either been mistaken by the fact that
Rockwell manufactures winmodem chipsets as well, or you just don't
know what you're talking about.
Rockwell chipsets have been used on a
huge variety of modems, and only _one_ of these chipsets is a winmodem.
I've been running modems with a fully functional Rockwell chipset
for years under Linux. Most of the cheaper hardware modems are based
on some flavour of the Rockwell chipset.

Argh. No. 8 MHz are more than enough to keep up with modem-to-modem
communications. And there are _plenty_ of ISA Winmodems out there.
But that's not the point here. If it works in DOS, it's not a winmodem.

I have the same kernal and Suse version 7.1 as yourself, so I should be
able to help. I also have an Abit 6BE II (mine is revision 2). You
shouldnt have to compile the alsa sound drivers, SuSe installation
configured the card correctly and my CD, MP3 and wav files played correctly.
I had a problem with midi, but solution was to load package awesfx and a
soundfont.
Back to your problem, what volume levels have you configured the card with?
I have 70% set with yast2, it is possible you may be overdriving your
amplifier and causing distortion or feedback. You can email me direct if
you like

All of latest kernels since approximatelly januar 2001 ( including
redhat kernels ) run my disk at 35 MB/s ATA/100.
No custom setting needed at all.
I have a VIA KT133 + 686B southbridge.
Needed kernel options :
CONFIG_??AUTO??IDE?????DMA??? YES
VIA IDE DRIVER YES ( read the help text, it tell you you MUST turn on the
CONFIG*IDE*DMA option
otherwise DMA won't work. You can turn it on with
hdparm either in that case )
compile , install , reboot , enjoy DMA.

No special configuration is needed.
With the VIA IDE driver you don't even need to run hdparm -d1,
because it starts up in DMA mode.

What does minicom report?
You can try to start
# minicom
on console and then "setup" your modem on
the appropriate serial port. Perhaps you have to install this tool first.

There is no TV-out support for ant ATI card and never will be.

The only way to get TV-out working is to boot up with no monitor connected but a TV,
so that the BIOS screen appears on TV. Then in linux you must use the vesafb driver.
You can not change resolutions then.
> We need to hook the PC up to a big colour TV for teletext-like

Try connecting using the RGB lines, works with every VGA card !
( connect the R,G,B and GND + the sync ; the TV requeires a single
composyte sync line , while most VGA cards use separate horizontal
and vertical sync, some may produce a composyte sync too, otherwise
you can combine the hsync and vsync to a c-sync with a simple circuit )
Don't forget to use a TV compatible resolution ! :-)
