OK, so I recently upgraded from rh5.2 to rh6. All well and good except for
one problem. My 8mm tape drive (scsi) doesn't want to function any more.
It is recognized at bootup at st0 and the scsi/st code is compiled into
the kernel. Whenever I try to talk to /dev/st0 it failed with a message
of "/dev/st0: Device not configured." Assuming this message means
something, how do I configure the drive? What do I have to do to get
it to work?

Thanks.

I gave you an example in one post (you can check
http://www.combatsim.com for their K6-III review.)

Here is another:

Computer Gaming World, July 1999 issue.

Page 114.

Winbench 99 FPU Mark

K6-III 450 1520
PIII-450 2280

How does that look like .55, huh? This is more like a .66 ratio at
least, and this is right on the spot of most other observations of the
K6 FPU vs. the PII FPU, which is about 33% or 1/3rd advantage for the
PII.

The 3DGameGauge (a benchmark composite of several games) has the K6-III
450 even higher:

K6-III 450 508.8
PIII 450 462.2

Subject: Travan streamer + DC390 + (Kernel > 2.0.32) = problem
Date: 6 Jul 1999 14:30:54 GMT

I've got a Tekram DC 390 SCSI-II controller in my Linux box (using
the Tekram driver for Tekram DC390/Am 53c974, v2.0d).
There's a HP Colorado T4000s Travan streamer connected to it.
Before updating from SuSE Linux 5.2 (kernel 2.0.32 I believe)
to SuSE 6.1 (kernel 2.2.5) I had no problems using that streamer
for backups (using GNU tar).

After the update it didn't work anymore (I/O error). I even could not
read the tapes I've written before the update! Arrrghh...
Writing a tape also doesn't work anymore.

Then I tried to install kernel 2.0.36 which also didn't work.
Finally I managed to read my old tapes using kernel 2.0.32.

This is of real importance for me - does anyone of you know
if there were major changes in the Tekram or SCSI tape driver?

How could I work arouind this problem? I'd really like to do backups
again. Any hints?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

You can send me an email if you got an idea: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks in advance!

Himm, this discussion inspired me to find the *critical* problem size at
which PII takes over Celeron (using CPLEX). I am going to begin with a very
small problem size and increase it until I hit the *critical* point. I will
post my results in a few days...

Subject: Advice on accessing CD-ROM changer disks from Samba?
Date: Tue, 06 Jul 1999 16:15:03 GMT

I've got a 5-disk CD-ROM changer that I'd like to access via Samba v2.0.4
on my Linux (RedHat v6.0) system. I already have Samba up and running
well, but I haven't had to deal with the CD changer until now.

The kicker, of course, is while there's 5 disks, there's only 1 read
mechanism. That means that the accessing of any given disk may mean first
selecting that disk to be under the laser.

I'm sure that someone on this ng has already addressed this problem, so
I'm writing to solicit suggestions. For example:

0. I'd prefer not to call the shares CDROM0, CDROM1, etc. Is there any way
to automatically make a volume label a share name?

1. I assume I need to run a preexec command/script when a given disk is
accessed. Is there any reason for a postexec command/script as well?

2. Recommended share parameters? I would think that "lock=no" is needed
since any given disk can be changed without warning. Anything else?

3. I'm anticipating a horror show when the Win98 clients on this LAN open a
Windows Explorer (WE) window. (For those not familiar with Win9x, WE is
the file manager.) WE wants to examine every drive available on the
system, including shared drives. My fear is that this will force the slow
change operation to be done 5 times, creating a significant delay to the
user. Is there a way around this, or I am I just being a worrywart?

I would appreciate any sharing (no pun intended!) of your experiences with
Samba and a CD-ROM changer under Linux.

Thank you.

This does tend to put the situation in a much better light Dan, Maybe I
was poking my nose into something that wasn't really my business, and if
so, my apologies are hereby tendered.

FWIW, Dartmouth hasn't been one to generate rumors in that vein, and I
was extrapolating, reading between the lines if you will, and probably
reading more than was writ. I could probably justify it by saying I was
looking at it from a distant view, many years removed, but thats a poor
excuse. You obviously have researched your options well.

Just curious, are you staying, or going home eventually, and if so,
where is home?

Classical IRQ conflict. You can not have two ISA devices (or an ISA and
a PCI device) sharing one IRQ on est. 95% of today's PC mainboards.
You'll have to assign a separate IRQ to all serial lines you want to
use.

See the Serial-HOWTO for details.

Perhaps it will take longer to get just a CPU and motherboard, but
systems with K7 should appear in about a month.

That is another issue, although with that attitude, you will never

I use an IDE CD-ROM and an IDE CDR. I use the SCSI emulation for both. You
should have two pseudo-SCSI devices : /dev/scd0 and /dev/scd1
Just mount it the way you did before (eg mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd1 /cdrom)
To enable writing, use the general SCSI driver, /dev/sg0 (or is it /dev/sr0 ?
I don't remember and I do not have access to my machine ...)

PAS16 is not a PNP device, so the above does not apply. But I really
thank you for the other hint, about the boot messages.

I think that the auto-generated option entry about the joystick was
causing the problem. After I took it out the driver started to load.
Now my PAS16 driver is loaded and working, SB part is still not.
