How can I, in linux, manually make a scsi drive spindown and/or power
off? I know IDE drives do this after a certain amount of time.
If I'm going to hot-swap a drive, can't I make it spindown?
Thanks!

Has anyone used an EIDE (not SCSI) dvd-ram on linux? If so, are there
every problems with buffer underruns (ala cdr)? What file system did
you use ext2 or udf?
Thanks.

It shouldn't be that hot! Are you sure you have nothing running?
Kill X and it's pesky brats, and nearly all daemons. Your `ps`
output should be very clean.
Check that your kernel dmesg shows the HLT instruction testing line,
and try not to use any APM, ACPI or other alphabet soup particularly
not in the BIOS.

I downloaded a rh iso via ncftp, and burned it to a disk via cdrecord. I
can mount it. But all I see is the one iso file, and not a directory
listing. Anyone know how to use md5sum? Any other ideas?

Hi,
i've been using an ICN ISDN card since several years. Now started
using the 2.4.x kernels and the iomem region is used by something
called "000cd000-000d17ff : Extension ROM" 0xd0000 is exactly what I
need to feed the card with it's firmware. ;(( How can I get rid of
this "Extension ROM" in that area??
Any help is welcome

Help, I have the subject motherboard and I can't install Mandrake Linux 7.2.
The system
just hangs at the beginning of the install. I can't find any info on the
board other than Red
Hat says it's not a goodness. Has anyone successfully installed any Linux
on this system?

Definitely seconded on the Mozilla recommendation. It's intolerably
slow on a dual PPro-200/256 with 64MB RAM.
Memory is dirt cheap. Get up to between 64MB and 128MB, inclusive,
and you'll be very happy. 32MB is usable, but with the low prices of
RAM nowadays ($54 for 128MB)...

That reminds me of a `fortune' joke. It went something like this, for
those who haven't seen it:
The QWERTY keyboard layout is designed for both hands to be used
equally when typing. Yet the word "database" is typed using only the
left hand. This suggests that writing about databases is not only
unnatural, but a lot harder than it looks.
I don't know who it was attributed to, if anyone.

This is way outside my field of expertiese. The last time I checked, the
only time you can enable full duplex is if everything in your network and
support full duplex. I had an older 3C509 card, and a vortex card (can't
remember the card number), in both cases, the number of collisions/errors
almost disappeared when I disables full duplex mode, and the throughput
almost doubled, don't know why, but it worked for me.

X-posted to find help.
Sorry about using Win box to post - NMC (not my computer).
network is sneakernet (until I get the PCMCIA ethernet card going)
Hello Everybody!
I have a KDS Valiant 6480 laptop and a copy of RH6.2. The laptop is
supposed to do (and did under WinME) 16.7 million colors at 1024x768. I
would be happy with X running at 800x600 @ 8bpp, elated at 1024x768 @
16bpp.
Vid card is claimed to be a Trident Cyberblade. The Wme driver was a
Trident Cyberblade A1i AGP with 8MB video shared from RAM (128MB).
Startx messages identify the chipset as TGUI 9420DGI and TGUI9430DGI.
This confuses me.
XF86Setup, Xconfigurator and setup selected XF_SVGA as the Xserver. I
can't get it to run at even 640x480 8bpp. If I choose XF_VGA16 as the
server, I get a really junk screen at 640x480 8bpp, but it does function
properly (like using a microscope to read a billboard).
Here are the startx messages:
XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
Release Date: January 8 2000
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than
the above date, look for
a newer version before reporting problems.

Strange, IIRC the xfree86 website lists that they support 3d accelleration
on the Radeon cards, but I've also read that the TV out is not supported,
nor is there likely to be support in the near/far future.

It'll spindown when power is removed.

Heyz,
Archisman is right, create a little partition at the beginning of your disk,
that has a maximum of 1024 cylinders. Make it mountpoint /boot, and install
your kernel there (some (or all?) distributions install the default kernel
there during installation too). Install LILO in the MBR, and you'll have no
problems. If you intend to install Windows NT, or Windows 2000 on the same
machine read the NT/Linux mini-HOWTO... It has a very clear explanation on
how to make this a good working dual boot. It involves creating an image of
the bootsector of your linux-partition, and using that as a bootfile with
your NT bootmanager.... It's so easy that even I could do it ;-)
FYI: I had exactly the same problem on my machine here at work (SuSE 6.4 /
Win2K AS). I used these two solutions and I'm running with zero downtime
(except for the reboot's offcourse) since october last year.... I'd love to
work with just linux, but since I'm an Oracle consultant I need windows for
my tools to work..
HTH,
Bastiaan Schaap
