I've used a 300a overclocked to 450 on an Abit BX6-R2 running

I am thinking about installing Linux on a new computer.
It will have the below listed hardware.
AMDK6-3 400
128M PC100
FIC-2013a MB
8.4G HD
44X CDROM
Ricoh CDRW
Adaptec-SSCII 1569??? Cant remember number
SB value 64 sound card
STB TV adapter card
ATI Rage Pro AGP or New AGP card.
Cardinal Connecta 3440 modem V.90 ISA
NE2000 PCI net card
I went to CompUSA to buy a copy of Linux for $29.95, but the sales
Staff told me I would have problems with the OS and my hardware. They
said that Linux had no support for CDs (The program was on a CD) or CD
Writers and that I would have a problem setting up my sound card and
Modem and most of the hardware.
I wanted to get the REAL scoop on this.
Will I be able to use my CD writer? MOST IMPORTANT!
I thought this was a good OS with support for most hardware. I read the
package, but it did not say anything about compatible hardware so I put
it down and did not buy.
Please help! I want to try the OS but do not want to give up the CD
writer or net card. The other items such, as the TV card isn't so
Important. Can anyone lead me into the right direction, a Web page or
something to study up on the hardware compatibility.
Also I heard that the OS is free on the Internet. How do you download
and install it? I have a T1 line here and should be able to get it
fairly fast. Which directories do I copy from the FTP sites? I also
heard Corel was giving away WordPerfect for Linux.
Thanks in advance for the information!

I have the same problem with my parallel port LS-120.
The whole system comes to a hault until access to the
LS-120 is complete. It also takes forever to copy files
to the LS-120. One 56MB file took 28 minutes to copy !!
I have tried both SuSE 6.1 and Mandrake 6.0 and both do
the same exact thing.

Hello. I've been using the same floppy disk for the past two
months, popping it in and out of my drives several times a day
and transporting nearly everyday.
Yesterday, I couldn't mount the disk because of some bad sector.
(don't remember the error.) So my guess is the diskette just wore out.
Fortunately, I still have my stuff on my hard drive.
Now my question is:
1. how long do floppy 1.2MB diskettes last?
2. Are zip drives more robust?
3. If a disk has a few bad sectors, is there anyway to recover what
might be left on the good sectors? (Perhaps none of my data fell
on the bad sectors) That is, is there some sort of Norton's
Utilities for Linux?
Thanks.

Or purchase Xi Graphics' server, which supports it. http://www.xig.com.
Their price is $100, including free updates.
I don't know how well it works, but if you don't want to use VESA and
you don't want to wait for the XFree86 people to release a driver, this
may be a good alternative. Someone else who posted here said it worked
well.

<p>If you plan on transporting files on zip disks, you either need to do

Here's RedHat's list:
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/hardware/intel/60/rh6.0-hcl-i.ld.html
I've experience with NE-2000 clones and some 3Com cards.
NE-2000 cards are well supported, although you might have to manually
provide IRQ and port settings with some cards. You may also have to
configure the card's hardware with a DOS program, depending on what kind
you get.
At work, I use 3Com 3C905 and 3C905B cards. The 905C isn't yet
supported by RedHat, although someone posted a reference to a driver you
can download.

Again, see the RedHat list. I have used these cards with XFree86:
- JAX 8241 - a generic S3 801/805 card. Worked OK with the S3 server,
but setup took a bit of playing around. X can't probe this card for
anything or it crashes.
- Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 - uses the S3 ViRGE chipset. Worked well with
both the SVGA and S3V servers. Can't achieve high-resolution and
high-refresh rates at 16-bit color.
- ATI Xpert98 - uses the RAGE-Pro chipset. Works perfectly with the
MACH64 server.
- ATI All-in-Wonder - uses the RAGE-II chipset. Works perfectly with
the MACH64 server.
- STB Velocity 128 - uses the N-Vidia RIVA-128 chipset. Works perfectly
with the SVGA server.
- Creative Graphics Blaster-TNT - uses the N-Vidia RIVA-TNT chipset.
Works perfectly with the SVGA server.

Any modern multisync monitor should be able to lock on to any frequency
XFree86 puts out. Just get the horizontal and vertical frequency limits
(from the monitor's manual, hopefully) and plug them into the
/etc/X11/XF86config file. The xf86config program (I don't know about
XConfigurator) provides modelines for nearly every resolution you're
likely to want to use. Not every refresh rate you may want is in there,
however, so you may want to play with modelines, but that's not
necessary.)
Most monitors have extensive controls for sizing and positioning the
image, so you shouldn't have to tweak modelines for that, either.
Choose your monitor, just like you would do for any other OS. Check the
dot-pitch, multisync limits, and price. And ask your dealer to
demonstrate it at the resolution you plan on using. And go with a
reliable brand. (I have a thing for Sony monitors, but there are plenty
of other good brands out there.)

You could always run scandisk to hopefully repair the bad sectors. Zip
disks will eventually have the same problems. After all, they are nothing
but big floppy disks. I suggest you only copy those files you want to put
onto floppy/zip disks. Both disks have a shelf life of approximately 5
years. But of course, the more you use them, the shorter the life span.
Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn't use either for long term data
storage/back-ups. The best way to store data and/or transport data is to
burn it onto a cd-rom (if you have that capability).

First of all, if you want to use your IDE CD-Writer under Linux, you
need to recompile the kernel so that Linux _thinks_ your CD-RW is a
SCSI drive and not an IDE drive. Read the CD-Writing HOWTO for more
info. After this, your drives will probably be known as /dev/scd0
and /dev/scd1.

This really should work right out of the box with no hassles. I know
you said that Windows can use both drives, but are you _sure_ that you
have the jumpers set correctly on the drives? I have this exact setup with
my CDRW as the master and my CDROM as the slave on the secondary controller
and Linux has never had a problem recognizing the drives. Does your BIOS
recognize the drives properly?

My advice to you is to check the cdrecord-compatible hardware list to be
sure that your drive is listed, and then rebuild your kernel to emulate
SCSI CD support. Hopefully, your problem will be resolved. If not, check
your BIOS and jumper settings. The hardware list is at
