I'd like to echo the opinions expressed by others, if your machine is
not prone to hang/crash etc at present then it probably does not require
extra cooling. However, a few points to note:

When setting up the 1st few early Pentium machines for customers, we had
tremendous cooling problems, having to carefully source cases to allow
air flow over the processor etc...we even ended up with some tower cases
with two fans drawing air in (one pointing at the processor, one at the
then brand new 4Gb SCSI drives which ran frighteningly hot and died in 6
months until we started using the extra fan), a fan on the processor,
and two fans drawing air out....ok, the extra extractor fan was
overkill, but we got fed up of the damn things crashing after being on a
few hours we just went into fan frenzy!

These machines had problems all through the next few years, from the
hard drives failing (running at 60-80 degrees C is NOT good for them,
which is the sort of temps we monitored on the drives themselves without
that extra fan), to RAM chips needing re-seating (heating/cooling cycles
and all that)....even with all the fans in, we ended up having to make
call-outs (they'd got us on a 2 hour response contract too!) to replace
fans with bearings getting noisy....one ended up sounding like an
aeroplane starting up as the fan made the whole case vibrate with the
harmonics.

Anyway...my point?...erm....yes, fans can be essential, but they are not
a good solution. The point someone made about keeping the inside of the
case clean is a good one, but please, not a domestic vacuum cleaner!
They tend to generate a large amount of static around the nozzle, and if
there is one thing you don't want, its static zapped components...or
even, static stressed components (liable to fail sooner). So, my
advice, if the machine is a vital one, get a good case with a good
airflow to start with without extra fans. Monitor the temp (get a multi
meter with a thermo couple input calibrated to read temp straight off)
of various components and plan your airflow accordingly. Keep the
inside of the case clean (use filtered fans, but be aware they have less
airflow) by regular and careful professional cleaning equipment, and
whatever you don, don't start frying eggs on the hot bits! :-)

I remember a comment by one of the designers of the Cray super computers
many years ago, that they were not so much computer designers as
plumbers, (I can't remember the exact wording, but I believe this was
the gist of the comment) a reference to how heat dissipation was more of
a problem than anything else....:-)

If anyone has comments to make on this rambling post, please CC my
e-mail too, as I don't get to check the news groups too often....

The only way I've found is to upgrade to 2.2.10 -- works fine for me.

Best regards,

will this work with RH 5.2 ? I tried it and still get the 320X ?? screen.
It seems to ignore the fact that there is 8 mb of vram available, and
defaults to no vram available. What am I doing wrong?

Subject: psaux device
Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 16:11:36 GMT

I have two PS/2 ports on the back of my computer. One of the ports is
used by the keyboard. I have tried to use the other port for my mouse,
without success.

I have enabled psaux support in the kernel, and, on bootup, the kernel
reports that a PS/2 mouse port is available. I then specified the PS/2
mouse on /dev/psaux in my XF86Config file. If I attach a mouse to the
open PS/2 port, though, the two devices start fighting with each other.

Maybe they are using the same interrupt? If so, how to set the IRQ? I
assume that setserial won't work with /dev/psaux.

Thanks,
Tom Ed White

After installing bttv, xawtv and following all the directions, trouble
shooting guides, etc, I am still unable to get this tv card to
function. When running the xawtv I get the following output:

 This is xawtv-2.46, running on Linux/ppc (2.2.11)
wmhooks: gnome
x11: 1280x1024, 32 bit/pixel, 5120 byte/scanline, DGA, VidMode
open /dev/video: No such device
can't open /dev/video: No such device
waitpid: No child processes
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
open /dev/video: No such device
no video grabber device available

According to my /var/log/messages file I am successfully installing the
modules. I have run xawtv as root and otherwise without change in
output. The permissions on the /dev/video0 are :
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 81, 0 Aug 22 10:44 /dev/video0

/dev/video is a link to /dev/video0 and I have tried linking to
/dev/video1-3, /dev/bttv0-3 to no avail. What in the world am I missing
here?? Please someone give me some advice on this problem. John

Hi, there,

I have a question on the wall papers for RH6.0.

I have some JPEG files, can I make them wallpapers for my RH6.0? My
favorate windows managers are Fvwm and Afterstep. But anyway, if you know
how to make my JPEG files as wall papers in other managers, such as GNOME
or KDE, please give me your suggestion. Thanks a lot.

I understand that the SB PCI128 is supported; I remember seeing
something to that effect on one of the newsgroups recently. (I'm
usually too lazy to get sound working, myself.)

I have a MAG monitor of some sort, but in general there's no problem
with monitors. One suggestion: track down your monitor's specifications
before trying to configure X. You'll want to know the horizontal and
vertical frequency limits so that X can set timings that don't fry the
monitor (it's happened to me). If you don't have the information,
specifying your monitor as a "generic multisync" usually works with
anything that's not too old.

I too, am a newbie at this...and I am having
almost the exact same problem you are. I'm using
a Conexant SoftK56 Data-fax-speakerphone PCI
modem, and a Creative/Ensoniq Audio PCI card. In
KDE, Kppp setup always gives me a modem is busy
message...even if I reset it in terminal mode
(which doesn't allow me to type anything
either). Snd Config will detect my sound card
successfully...but it cannot install it
correctly...I get an error that says "sox:..."
and lists what seem to be a large number of audio
card commands? I know both of these cards are
PnP, and that may be the prob...but I haven'ta
clue as to how to turn that off...and yes..I do
have Win98 also installed..Looking forward to
help...

When sendmail hangs for a long time during boot it is often because
there is something wrong in /etc/hosts. It is probably unable to
determine its own hostname.

For your OS/2 support, you might want to look at SciTech Display Doctor.
You can download the latest beta from their website for free to give
it a try. I've been waiting for their Rage 128 support to go production
(at which point I intend to buy a Rage 128 based card); but several
other OS/2 users have told me via email they have gotten good results
running the Beta. SciTech also produces a Linux verision; but, so far it
only supports Mach64/Rage64.
