I have an HP Deskjet 1000C (or C-something-or-another) that I got
before the 1100 and 1200 series (better printers) came out, but I have
to live with it... and I want a driver for it to use under Linux. I
have searched the HP site (someone had asked the question before and
the moderator didn't know) as well as this newsgroup and have found
nothing applicable. Please notify me if I have missed something,
because I am quickly becoming desprate. Any help would be much
appreciated!

PS - Even an extremely buggy pre-pre-release would be better than
nothing!

I installed RH 6.0 on my wifes Emachine. I had to replace the onboard
video card which didn't
work with the Mach64 server (had tire trackes running up and down the
left hand side of the screen)
The "Crystal" sound chip worked fine and was identified with
sndconfig. Of course the modem was a winmodem and I replaced it with a
BestData 56SF Controller Based ISA Modem. It working fine.

The only place I have found very much information about the PCI bus was in
"Linux Device Drivers" by Alessandro Rubini published by O'Reilly. Also,
If you don't have them, download the PCI Utilities. The version I have is
pciutils-1.99.5-alpha. After you have them do a man lspci, and man
setpci. lspci and setpci let you get to the PCI bus to see what's there,
and change the registers. You should find calls to them in the source.

I was able to get a PCI parallel port set up using the above information,
and some info from the manufacturer. It only took me 7 months.

James;

I'm having some problems too with installing off of the RedHat 6.0
cdrom disk 1. It was suggested that I create a boot floppy off of
the cd, as possibly you did, along with creating a ramdisk.img
file from one downloaded from RedHat's web site. When I did this,
I had the same error message that you got. However...I downloaded
a copy of the boot32.img file from their ftp site, along with the
rawrite.exe file at that point. I then created a floppy with the
ftp'ed boot32.img file and found that I was then able to boot off
of the floppy. So, you might want to try this.

background info: I'm having fun with a SS20 that I have at home with
doing the linux install. It has 96 mb ram, (4) 1Gb drives, an internal
cdrom drive and floppy drive. Funny thing is that I was able to
install Solaris 7 off of the cdrom drive in its entirety (900 Mb).

Gee, SB Live (Value) not supported? Humm, I might get a skip/stutter
when the machine is busier than a one armed paper hanger, but the *.3b
version of the driver from their site sounds pretty good to these old
ears. My range is shot, carhart notches 120 db deep at 4khz, and come
back up to about -10 above that & go on to about 14-17khz depending on
the day, wax in them etc... Distortion I can still hear, quite
well. Mp3's sound great, as do .wavs, except for the occasional few
millisecond skip/stop.

I am having the same problem with Mandrake 6.0 (even with the new install
disks from the ftp site) it seems that this is a problem with the boot disks
and a pcmcia/ide controller combination problem. However, Slackware 4.0 will
detect and install (try it) a IDE Pcmcia cdrom from floppy, and install it's
system. However, I really, really, really want Mandrake on my laptop (too
many goodies compared to slakware) so I'm gonna fight this until I turn
purple I guess. Time to make out a bug report I guess unless someone out
there know how to get Mandrake/Redhat to work with IDE/PCMCIA cards....

Heres an interesting disk. If you have a modem in a system and want to know
if its a winmodem try this disk. Boot to it, it runs a whole mini system
off the floppy alone.
If the modem works--- it will work in Linux.

After mkisofs and cdrecord, the CDR cannot be mounted and view in

session created by CDRECORD did not closed yet.

How to close session with CDRECORD ?

After closing session in Windows, I can view the file burnt with
CDRECORD in Windows. But the CD can still not be mounted in
Linux, it said it is not ISO9660 format ... Why does this happen?

I have a problem similar to the one that Scott has but I think its just a
bad sector on my hard drive (2.1G WD). Got any tips (other than
replacement) for configuration (RH 6.0) so that I don't get notified of the
error every second (literally). Fsck knows there is an error but it just
wants to continue without fixing it. This thing sounds really bad so I
don't know how much longer its going to last....

I cannot get loopback device even compiled with it, do you know why?
This is the script I use to make CDR :

# Make ISO image
mkisofs -r -o /root/cdrecord/cdimage.raw /root/cdrecord/cdimage

# Check cdimage.raw file format (Requires loop device support)
mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 /root/cdrecord/cdimage.raw /cdrom

The Jet is actually an Advansys SCSI controller. You need to specify
advansys as a module or built in.

/usr/src/linux/.config' needs either
        CONFIG_SCSI_ADVANSYS=m
or
        CONFIG_SCSI_ADVANSYS=y
along with the usual SCSI stuff.

Assuming that my brain has not completely deserted me, I am fairly sure that
the HP1120C is a PCL/3e printer. That means that the standard Ghostscript
should work just fine. You have your application output PostScript (which
most Linux apps do). You then run the PostScript file into Ghostscript
which produces the PCL/3e data stream. You then direct this to your printer.

I know that there is a way to do this automatically using the "printcap"
file and "filters" (APSFILTER? MagicFilter?). But I haven't done it myself
because I was a fool and bought a WinPrinter (before I was a Linux user) and
I can't print under Linux.

I hope this is of some use to you,
John

No, no messages at all, other than it asks for the next tape. I have not
tried to format the tape in Winblows. The machine its currently installed
in is not dual boot, its linux only. Given the next opportunity, i will try
to format the tape if possible.

I've attempted to use both dump and tar, along with another progrm I've
found on the net called perfect backup. All stop at roughly the same spot.

I recently installed Linux-Mandrake 6.0 and am having some
difficulties connecting to the internet. I have followed all the
instructions for setting up my modem and ISP connection but always
receive the same error during the connect process, "Timeout expired
while waiting for the ppp interface window to come up." My modem
initializes, dials the number and connects. It then supplies the
username and password before the connection window goes into a
"Logging onto network" process. This process sits for a while before
I get the timeout error mentioned above. I have searched all over the
internet but can't find any info to help me out in this situation.
Any ideas? Some help on this would greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

There is an HTML page that describes installing a BT based card at:

Let me know if you want it in a flat ASCII file, I'll email it.
