I have some of the similar components as you. To me, the key is that
you MUST read the hardware compatibility before purchasing your
components.
Seems as if the video card is the stickiest point. I have an ATI
Xper128 (Rage chipset) and it was not fun setting it up. I finally
did, but had to use the frame buffer support driver. I was
disappointed they didn't have a driver in 3.3.5.
However, Xi has a great driver. But, it also costs $99. Seems like a
lot for a X Window manager.

What goes wrong is that I get the following message :
SCSI detected : 0
VFS cannot open root device 08:21
Kernel Panic : VFS : Unable to mount root on 08:21
and that this message makes the installation procedure exit on error.

Try this...
Boot up using a MS boot floppy with the fdisk and sys programs on it.
Then type:

Are you running the default 225 kernel? Try the 2210 kernel. We had
periodic problems with the 225 kernel and these devices. All cleared up at
2210.

Any external modem should work fine. It is the internal modems,
specifically winmodems or software modems, that linux does not like.
Don't get me wrong, there are some good internal modems, but if you
are unsure which one to get, you are better off getting the external.

Subject: 3c509B Issues
Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 06:56:37 GMT
Hi all
Yup I'm a newbie, and here is the current situation.
1-3c509B (not 905)
1-33.6 jumpered USR internal modem
1-Ess1869-68 soundcard
So, at the begining I fough t and finaly got the modem to let me go
online (dhcp). All was good in the learning land of linux. Then I went
for the ess. The kernel detected ess, but wouldn't initialize the
second part of the audiodrive, so I started playing with sndconfig.
Well......kinda mucked that up by setting an irq that conflicted with
something else so bdly that with my tiny knowledge of Linux, I had to
reinstall. So reinstall worked fine, went back to exactly as before.
So decided to put sndcrd on back burner and go fo networking. So I
could ping and watch my hub lights blink, but no response. So read
through some HOWTO and newspostings and turned PNP off on the nic card.
Now when I boot the card isnt listed and if I try to add it manualy, it
still fails. So i'm thinking that I am setting my ioports wrong.
Problem is that I don't know what the default settings are for ANY of my
cards. Now eth0 isnt working (ppp0 is though). So i'm gonna have to go
to Windoze and put my card in and set the properties back to PNP and
then go back to linux and try it again. What a pain..if any one know
how to make RH 6 rescan for PNP devices at boot let me now. The only
way I know how is to do a reinstall, which has got to be bassackwards.
I've seen some comment about at LILO; to do some eth0........., but how
could you put that in to be permanent? is it making a new kernel? or is
it removing a mod then re-adding the mod? Oh, and please excuse the
noise, it's just me banging my head against the keyboard... :) .. but
I AM COMMITED TO SEEING THIS THROUGH ITS COMPLETION. I will learn how
to configure devices in linux, or i will learn how to configure things
in linux. Never surrender, never quit...just find a different way of
looking at things..

I'm writing this on a Dell Inspiron 3500 which is _very_ happily
running RH 6.0. When it arrived I just booted from a RH 6.0 boot
floppy and did a network OS install. I'm fond of Linux, but even I
was impressed with how easily it loaded - no tweaking or fiddling.
As an aside, I'm using a Linksys Etherfast 10/100+56K PCCard. It was
autorecognized by the install procedure quite happily (both Ethernet
and modem).

Sorry, no - didn't get a cd player (but zip and floppy work fine, so
I have no reason to believe the cd player would give trouble).

Subject: Assessing performance bottlenecks in a server?
Date: 06 Sep 1999 03:04:16 -0400
I'm looking for pointers on assessing bottlenecks in a Linux server
(Dell 2200 - non-raid). It's serving as a departmental support box,
running Cyrus IMAP, Apache, IMP webmail frontend, sendmail, DHCP,
cacheing-only DNS, Samba, and maybe a couple of other things that
slip my mind at the moment...
It's doing quite impressively well, but I'd like to be reasonably
intelligent about upgrading it. I'm not sure how to assess whether
I'd be better off (for instance) getting a second CPU or shifting to
some sort of raid disk system. Or even how to assess whether one or
more applications are sucking an unreasonably large amount of CPU or
disk usage (other than just staring at ps and top listings). For
example, I have this creepy feeling that either sendmail or Cyrus's
deliver are grossly inefficiently thrashing the disk (this based on
eardrum instrumentation...).
I'd appreciate pointers to relevant FAQs, HOWTOs, or other documents
that people have found useful.
Thanks!

Yes they do: Compaq has a beta version of a fortran compiler
for Linux AXP. It's a port of DEC's own compiler for their
Unix for Alpha.
I tried it on a 1 MB source analog circuit simulator
and the binary was a factor of 2 faster than g77's
(from gcc-2.95.1).
This speedup seems to be quite stable with all progs i tried.
I'm looking forward to a corresponding C compiler.

Martin.
