I have a Viking Components Compact Flash adapter and a Viking 32 MB Compact
Flash card. I am trying to mount it under Linux so that I can copy and view
pictures that I take with my digital camera. I connect it to my Toshiba
Tecra 730XCDT, which also has a Linksys Ethernet card connected through the
PCMCIA slots. The Ethernet works fine, but I am unable to figure out how to
mount the Compact Flash card. I am using Red Hat 6.0 on this system. I
need to be able to access my pictures on this machine, if I cannot figure
this out I will have to put Windows back on this machine. Can this be done
in Linux?

It's probably a Windows-only software modem. Please check the list at:

Does anyone have the P6DGU motherboard? If so, would you please tell
me what brand system memory you use? I know there are a couple brands
out there that give people trouble. I know the Supermicro Web site
list several but would rather get the info from someone using this
board. Also, is the 7890 Adaptec SCSI that comes with it capable of
running 7 devices ie, hard drives, scanners, CDRoms, and zip drives?

I've got an old hand scanner from Primax that would
like to see working under Linux. Sane does not support it, nor
the Primax Colorado project, at least until where I know.
The main thing is the little interface ISA card that it uses.
I don't know what exactly it is, and could not find what
each chip is for. I've got no problem in trying to write a
driver for it, if only I could manage myself to the card
internals, or behavior. Perhaps I could try to peek at the windoze
driver, but would need a good tutorial in softice or so and live
disassembling, since I only have debugged simple programs this
far.

Subject: Disk partitioning problem with AST Ascentia 910N
Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 13:53:59 +0200
I'm having a serious disk I/O problem on my AST Ascentia 910N
I'm trying to install linux on an old laptop. I'm using SUSE 6.1 (kernel =
2.2.7),
but that should not be the key point since I also tried Redhat 5.0, OpenL=
inux
1.3 and an old debian (kernel 2.0.31). I tried various kernel parameters,=
but
without really knowing what to do. I'm installing with an external CDROM
(driver onspec 90c26 parallel port (on26) is competible. Seems to work fi=
ne).=20
I have only 8MB Ram, but i'm not buying more until it works.
You can find the boot messages at the end of mail and some info from /pro=
c.
On internet I found nowbody had any problems with this laptop (all very h=
appy)
, so i think i maybe have a different disk or they installed some obscure
or corrupted disk manager. I accept to loose everything on the disk (back=

I inserted the following sections=20
A. Problem with fdisk
B. hdparm and cfdisk output after partitioning with dos
C. ext2 fs corruption
D. proc files and boot message
This is an old laptop and bios offers no help (there are absolutely no op=

I really hope someone could help, this is not my PC and I was hoping
to create a new linux fan (my girlfriend!). I've had various complex inst=

No. There was *no* standard C compiler in those days, in the sense
we're talking about, which is "standards-conforming", since there was
no standard to conform to. At least nothing as generic yet minute as
ANSI. And anyway, do you believe for a moment that those earlier
kernels didn't depend on *any* compiler behavior that wasn't explicitly
set down in K&R? I don't.
What they used was the *de facto* standard compiler for their
platforms. And, sure enough, the Linux kernel uses the de facto
standard C compiler for the Linux platform. GCC.

I am jumping back in to the Linux world again but I seems
I have run into a snag. Previously I had a Diamond Viper 550
it worked perfect with RH5.2 I just tried installing RH 6.0
with my new vid card the Creative TNT2 Ultra. No dice. I got the
test screen to work twice but the screen is so large you can not
do anything. I tried multi monitor selections. No dice. I do no
that Nvidia has linux drivers for the TNT and the TNT2 but
how am I to download and install them when X is not working. Any help

Subject: Modem difficulties - feedback wanted
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 13:05:41 GMT
Perhaps somebody there has had a similar problem. Here it is...
I recently purchased a Jaton Communicator (internal modem, goes on the
ISA bus, can be set up for either PnP or manual config)
The modem was recommended by that "Cheap Linux Box" page, and it works
fine under Windows 98 (I know, I know, that doesn't mean squat...but at
least the hardware functions)
When I run Linux, the isapnp stuff finds it fine, and assigns it to irq
4, on ttyS0. setserial -g /dev/ttyS* shows it there with UART 16550 (I
think...I'd need to check again to be sure)
The problem is this...it won't respond under Linux. Kppp says "Sorry,
modem is not responding) and when I open minicom, it doesn't respond to
anything I type at the terminal.
Is there something here that I've missed? I've been going through the
Modem, PnP and Serial HOWTOS, but I seem to be coming up blank. If
anybody's got some experience with this, or just some suggestions, I'd
love to hear them.
Thanks,
Kurt

Be careful about "hot" plugging in a keyboard. It may not work. So
you will need to test this out before things get hosed. Some of the
modern keyboard/video/mouse switch boxes work fine. I have good luck
with a "protec bytelan" switchbox, others should also work. This
solution may be too expensive for you.

Subject: Seagate NS20 Tape Drive - Problems
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 14:28:07 GMT
Good morning all,
I have been trying to get a Seagate NS20 tape
drive to work w/ my Linux system for over a month
now. I have run all diagnostics provided by
Seagate, and they show the drive to be in perfect
working order.
The drive is detected by the SCSI bios, and by
linux. I have no problems mounting nst0 or st0.
However, when I try to write to the tape I
experience a lockup. If I switch over to another
virtual terminal I see scsi read/write error
messages.
I have tried 3 different scsi controllers to no
avail. I am at a loss at to what to do as the
ns20 is not officially supported by seagate.
Thanks for any help you can provide,

To ALL:
I have a notebook computer configured with 2.2.12 kernel and have been
experiencing an unusual problem since I installed kernel 2.2.6.
My notebook is configured with a triple boot, 1 - NT 4.0 (SP4), 2 - WIN98,
3 - Linux ... When I boot my computer via Linux, I mount my win98 and winNT
partitions with no problem. I can access both with no problem. However, when
I backup my notebook via tar -- it either hangs hard or reboots.
If I exclude the NT partition from the backup the notebook works with no
problem. I backup just the NT volume via tar it hangs or reboots. Lately
since kernel 2.2.12 it has been rebooting more often then hanging...
Has anyone had any similar problems or can point me in the right direction
.... It also doesn't matter how long the computer is up for, what file is
being backed up or where in the directory tree it is ....
Thanks,
Carmelo
