Hi!
If anyone has been able to get Xfree86 3.9.17 working with the dual
head g400 please could they post their XF86config file. I have been
trying in vain to get the dual head set up, I get only one screen. I
cant figure out how to modify the xf86config file so that xfree86
recognises that I have a dual head card. The xf86config file shows how
to do it for two seperate matrox cards, but doesnt explain how to do it
for a dual head. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Okay I have XFree86 3.3.5, I've downloaded the two
RPM's from Intel, installed the two RPM's in my RPM
library via the RPM manager in KDE. I have the new
Xserver in the directory. How do I use the agpgart.o
file? Do I have ro recompile my kernel? The README's
say I need a new module, is this the agpgart.o file?
As you can tell I'm a newbie, and having to dive in the
deep end to get my desktop resolution above the
vga16 presets. HELP! I want to see the rest of my
desktop!

There are also various web sites that index the documentation.
And, the desktop projects both are providing unified entry points
into the installed documentation.

I had very little trouble installing RH6.1 on a Dell Latitude CPi within the
last two weeks. The fancy graphical installed froze at the end 7 out of 8
times, but the text based installer worked great. From my experience with dual
boots etc, I would recommend that you have more hard disk available. RH
installed 579MB (for KDE desktop and all 'workstation' apps). Can you put more
memory in?
Good luck,

I have an ESS 1868 isa soundcard that worked proplerly under Mandrake 6.0,
Suse 6.1, and Red Hat 6.1.
I get the same error message and device or resource busy as you.
Other users of different soundcards report the same problem with Mandrake
7.0.
I also had this problem with the Peanut distribution, which has the same
Kernel, Xfree86, as Mandrake 7.0
Is this a generic Kernel 2.2.14 problem.
Are there any success stories out there with configuring this card?
If not, what cards have worked proplerly?

Adaptec cards have always been good to me. I have three Linux boxes running with
Adaptec hardware.
With a 2940U2W and an lvd drive you can transfer up to 80 mgb/s - and they just
came out with a 160mgb/s card too.

Maybe it would work better with the ALSA drivers. If you want to try it

It's not IMPS2. It should be "IMPS/2". Change the section in
XF86Config where it references the pointing device. Run mouseconfig
and choose Intellimouse (PS/2) and it will
change the gpm setting and automatically update the /etc/rc.d/init.d
file. Solved my problems. Mouse is now working fine in console mode

My wife has an HP6535, and we set up Redhat 6.1 on it. After some
effort setting it up, it seems to run Linux just fine. Linux even uses
the builtin modem. (It could use better support for the Intel 810 video
chip than I have found so far.)
I am mostly posting this because I disagree strongly with the preference
stated above for the locally built machine. You might save a few
hundred dollars, but you don't know where the parts came from (found
sitting beside a dumpster?), and if they are to be obsolete (i.e. not
repairable) much sooner than you think. (All warrantys have that
problem right now -- what does a 2 year or 5 year warranty mean if they
stop making the parts in 6 months? -- but the big companies have to do
something about it if you have a problem.

The ES 1868 works fine on my Dual Pentium II SMP and K6-350 on Debian 2.1 with
Linux 2.2.14. It's a setup problem with some other distributions. You can try
this setup utility to fix the problems. http://204.216.187.141/setpnp.html.

Subject: SB PCI128 and Red Hat Linux - Problems
From: Manuif <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 12:17:22 -0800
I have installed Red Hat Linux with the kernel version 2.2.14.
Everything seems to work fine, except my Soundblaster PCI128.
During the boot procedure the system prints the following error:
Sound device or resource busy.
I have already used the tool "sndconfig" which selected the
"es1371"-module automatically. But the error remains. If I select
a SB Pro or SB the program sndconfig aborts with the message
"segmentation fault".
So I edited the file modules.config as printed below:
..
alias sound es1371
options es1371 io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1 dma16=9 mpu_io=0x330
..
I used the settings of my autoexec.bat SB PCI entry. After
editing the file modules.config the error message has changed to:
invalid paramter io
If I delete the part "irq=7" of the line in my modules.config I
get another message:
invalid parameter dma.
Does anyone know how to get my SB PCI128 run under Linux?
Thank you in advance for your answer,
Manuel.
PS: I have an ASUS P3B-F motherboard.

Any Redhat variant should be able to successfully deal
with an isa pnp sound card by just running sndconfig.

Even with the PNP stuffs configured. The Redhack kernel does not work properly

Who said that? I've heard only good things about adaptec card and never

They've become a defacto standard and have about the best support and

Actually, Windows users don't know Linux but Linux users know Windows.
I still need Windows for
1. Multi-file downloads with Outlook Express.
2. Some web sites that won't work right with Netscape on Linux
3. Acrobat files (Acrobat Reader no longer work on my linux with glibc
2.0)
4. Lots of CAD/CAM tools.
I hate Windows, but I don't have any choice until the rest of the world
catch up with Linux.
