For some time I have wondered how much spare power I've got in my
box. How would you measure this on a Linux-only system. I suppose
you have to do more than measure the AC current as there are some
different DC voltages that all have to suffice.

Now I've got a Celeron 400, 3 IDE disks, 2 SCSI disks, 1 CD-ROM and 1
CD-RW. Everything is at most a year old. My power supply gives me
300W. How many disks would you let me add?

Anyone care to recommend 8- or 16-port multiport serial boards for supporting a
bank of modems with PPP on Red Hat 6.1? Your experience is appreciated.

If this topic has been discussed in depth recently, please point me to the
thread.

Get a clue. Most DMMs (Digital Multimeters) take that into account for you!
When you push the little "AC" button, a .707 factor is automatically figured
in! Of course, if your "AC" is not a TRUE sine wave, this correction may be
in error, and you would need to use a "True RMS" DMM. But, as I said in my
original post, that doesn't apply here.

And as for the apparent power nonsense, ALL OF THE LOADS IN A NORMAL
PC ARE DC! Very little imaginary power (V-I phase differential) is present,
if any. There are no large inductors to speak of, since most modern PC power
supplier are actually switching buck converters driven from direct
rectification of the AC line. Some cheaper power supplies do contain
transformers to handle line voltage changes, but those transformers are fairly
non-reactive.

Have you ever used a multimeter? Do you know how a direct rectification
switching buck converter power supply works? Have you ever tried to measure
the V-I phase differential in a PC power supply? I have. I know what I'm
talking about.

My original reply was not designed to impress anyone with my knowledge, but
merely to provide a minimal explanation to enable the original poster to
measure the power consumed by his system, and make sense of the numbers.

What was your reply intended to do? Prove that you're taking your first EE
class?

Subject: Linux crashes after cooling problem
Date: 29 Feb 2000 09:07:57 GMT

I'm having a strange problem with linux crashing on my pc: when I
run midnight commander in console login mode, open a file in it's native
editor, scroll down, then scroll all the way up untill I "hit the top
of the screen", it gets stuck. Nothing works anymore, no F10, no alternate
login, no ctrl+alt+del. It just doesn't move. Other problems occur with
netscape under x: sometimes it just slows to a crawl, where you have to
wait five minutes until your keystrokes get responded to (literally five
minutes), until netscape just crashes. Sometimes it just gets completely
stuck, not responding at all. The reason I think this is a hardware
problem is that it all started occurring after I experienced some cooling
problems, the cpu cooling unit had gotten detached from the cpu. I must
have run the thing for a while without cooling until I discovered the
problem when installing a new nic. I've installed a new cooling unit,
which works fine, but the problems remain. Did I blow out my cpu, or
is there another explanation?
The system I use is an old Pentium 90, if that helps. I also tried
reinstalling win95 on my other partition, and the installation crashes
too, so that makes me think the os is not the problem.

What error message was it? Were you running it as root?

What kernel do you have? It should be a 2.2.x kernel (2.3.x didn't work for
me) and it should have oss sound support compiled as a module. If you have
the original kernel of your distribution, this should be the case.
First, become root.
"lsmod" should tell you if the sound modules were loaded (look for au8830
and soundlow, or was it soundcore?). If it isn't, do a "depmod -vav". This
will give you a list of existing modules for your kernel version. The au8830
module (and also the other sound module) should be there. If it is, try
loading it with "modprobe au8830" (I hope this is the correct name..). If
you see no error message and still don't have sound, perhaps "dmesg" will
tell you something.

Hi,

I'm looking for information on the current status
(supported/unsupported) for two PIII mainboards:

- SuperMicro PIIIDM3 (or PIIIDM6)
- Tyan S1834 Tiger 133

Are there any known problems with these boards ?
(configuration would be something like
 2x700PIII, GeForce DDR, 768Mb - 1Gb RAM)

Thanks,

Stefan

Hi
I think you should first install Win98 and then Linux, then LILO not
the other way round. It worked for me. And make shure to make the
/boot partition below 1024 cyl. If you don't want to buy Partition

Anyone know of a driver for the Apple
Quicktake 100 (its a fairly old B&W

I need only tp get the images onto the PC,
the software that it comes with is Windows
and I don`t have this, (could manage Dosemu though)

gphoto has support for the QuickTake150, is this

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Here is Dell's answer to my problem:

At this time Redhat will only install with a single or dual channel
PERC 2 card (PERC II and PERC 2/SC). These PERC cards are AMI based
controllers and the PERC 2 (4 Channel) controller is an Adaptec based
RAID Controller. Adaptec plans on adding drivers for the PERC 2 card
sometime mid to late March. This would explain the difficulties you
are having during the install process. The only option you would have
at this time would be to use the HDs off the onboard AIC 7890 SCSI
controller. There is one note about using the onboard controller and
that is once you install with the drives on the onboard controller
they would have to be reinstalled once they are attached to the PERC
card. If you have any other questions please let us know.

Thanks for Contacting Dell,
Joseph

Hallo Stefan,

English:

- As far as I can tell only generic support for the new ATA66
controller. I.e. no UDMA66.

- 2.3.x apparently boots, but I haven't found anyone who kann confirm
2.2.x is o.k.

- The brand-new test in C't shows pretty poor memory sub-system
performance. No better than or worse than a decent 440BX dual board.

In short, other than allowing recent FSB133 PIII's to be used the board
buys you next to nothing under Linux over a recent 440BX or 440GX dual
board.

Deutsch:

I habe genau diese Frage erforscht. Leider war die Antwort nicht
optimal.

o Soviel ich heraus finden kann gibt es kein support for fuer den neuen
EIDE controller. Also, is (bestenfalls "generic" PCI controller da.
Also kein UDMA66.

o Linux in der 2.3.x versionen soll laufen aber 2.2.x weiss mann nicht
so recht.

Subject: Re: Printer Problems

Since you are running RH linux, you can configure printing under
X windows using printtool. printtool is useful since it will tell
you if it can find your parallel port. If no parallel port is
detected - that is your first problem. This will involve either
inserting the modules using insmod or recompiling the kernel
to include printer support - see Kernel-HOWTO.

If your parallel port is configured ok, you can test directly the
printer by typing as root 'cat fred.txt > /dev/lp0' where fred.txt
is any ascii text file. This will send the file directly to the
printer, avoiding any configuration files. This assumes the printer
is connected to the first printer port. If this does not work,
either the port is not setup properly or check the cable. The
Printing-HOWTO is a good source for ideas.

If that works ok, the problem will probably lie with either the file
/etc/printcap or the associated print filter file, probably located
in /var/spool/lpd/lp. Check out the page
http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi
to see if you can find your printer there and how to set it up.

You could also download pdq printing software, since this is easier to
get working than lpd. http://feynman.tam.uiuc.edu/pdq/

I still don't know how to send them, but I have some more information
-- I got desperate and hooked the printer up to a windows box, and
installed the driver, and a windows program that understands
postscript, and I have now printed something almost correct. So then

And also some postscript:

just before it finally gets to the header of the original document:
