check-in and after the PCI probe the system just reset.

I understand your message. Modem INIT string might be
"ATZ ->AT" and "ATDT ->ATD", I guess. But my external ISDN TA
(manufactured by one of Korean company) woundn't work under
kernel 2.0.36 and 2.2.1.
Unfortunately, it uses what they call "virtual ports" under windows,
say, COM6 and COM7, and linux doesn't know what's com6(ttyS5)
and com7(ttyS6). How can I resolve this problem?

Is there anyone out there could help me out?

Hi,
Using the default kernel which comes with RH 5.2 I can play MP3 files,
but after I upgrade to 2.2.1, I cannot play them. The computer locks up
when I attempt to listen to an MP3 file.
    In both kernels, however, I can `cat meepmeep.au > /dev/audio`, and `cat
meepmeep.au > /dev/dsp` successfully.
I used sndconfig to set up the sound card in 2.0.36, and the sample file
plays correctly.

Any input would greatly be appreciated,

Sorry I didn't realise that there were non-Winmodem PNP cards on sale.
I see a lot of posts from people in various newsgroups who have
bought PNP modems and find they are Windmodems.

Maybe all PCI/PNP modem cards are winmodems?

Yes, but the one you propose is not worth it.

The SIIG card is an SPP with a proprietary buffer. It will speed
up printing to some printers, but won't do anything for PP peripherals
like ZIP drives or HP CD-RW drives.

The Lava PCI Parallel card however, is a PCI EPP card that really does
give a significant speed improvement for PP peripherals, as compared to
ISA ports.

I installed Suse 5.2 on an IDE drive without any problems. I fitted a
big SCSI drive to the PC and tried to install on that. Installation
again went fine but when I try to boot from the SCSI using loadlin, it
fails saying it can't find the root directory to mount !

If I go back to the IDE installation, I can happily mount the SCSI
partitions and I've even tried putting the SCSI /usr partition in the
/etc/fstab file and it still boots fine. The adapter is an AHA152X
compatible and Linux finds it no problem so what have I missed ? Do I
need some sort of extra parameter when booting from the SCSI?
I tried using LILO but that managed to blow my boot disk up !!
After much fiddling I got it back but minus the ability to load the
previous OS (MSDOS6.22) - it just says it can't load it and goes
straight to Win95.
Cheers,

Hi,

I have a problem with Samba and Windows95.

There are two PCs, one running Windows95 (OSR 2), one running SuSE

Linux 6.0.

I wanted to create a network connection between those PCs (both with

3Com Etherlink III ISA (3C509b-Combo)), but there is no chance for me.

I'm not a network guru and hope anybody can answer

me.

Windows Network is configured with TCP/IP, no DNS support and with

IP 192.168.0.98. My Linux server has IP 192.168.0.99.

I tried many times to find a configuration with "smb.conf" to get

the connection running, but nothing happens. On my Windows PC I can see

the Samba server, but connections are not possible.

The call of "smbclient -L host" on my Linux-PC shows correct values.

"Testparm" also tells everything ok.

Each of the PCs can "ping" himself.

What can I do to get the system running ???

Help me, please.

Thanks Karsten

I'm using the same card under RedHat 5.2 and XFree
A few weeks ago it was RedHat 5.1.
RAM is not detected, but I haven't any problems.
You can simply run X86Setup :
# XF86Setup
and say "NO" when you will be asked "use or no existing configuration file?".
Also, you may be asked "is this reconfiguration?" - say "NO".
Always say "No" :-)
After then, the session of configurator will be started and I'm sure that you'll have
640x480 screen without any problem
Choose in menu "card" (press the relevant button)
Don't probe anything
Choose Chip "Mach64", RAMDAC "Internal", don't choose any ClockChip
Press "8M" button for memory and don't forget to configure mouse, display and etc.
Now follow the on-screen instructions and save new config file.........

Fell free to contact me..

Subject: Internal ATAPI zip incompatible?
From: Jeffrey Anderson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sat, 06 Feb 1999 20:55:39 GMT

I've just bought a new computer with an internal OEM NEC ATAPI zip
drive. Under Win98 it works fine, but under linux I find that it
can't read zip disks from other machines. These are disks that I've
used for some time and are known to work in several different drives,
both parallel port and internel IDE. If I repartition and reformat a
zip disk on the new machine, it can use the disk, but then my other
machines can't read it.

The new machine chokes on both ext2 and fat, on /dev/hdb1 and
/dev/hdb4 (using ide-floppy), on /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda4 (using
ide-scsi). The details don't seem to matter. It just can't read the
partition table, or when it does, it can't understand the filesystem.

I've tried under kernel 2.0.36 and 2.2.1, with both ide-floppy and
ide-scsi. Always the same result.

As I said, under Win98 the new drive can read vfat disks from other
machines, so the drive functions.

Any ideas?

At some SCSI cards I know there are problems installing on the last SCSI ids. However
your workaround is nearly complete. However before rebooring from SCSI id 14 you have
to change lilo.conf so it
points to /dev/sde instead of /dev/sdb. And the same with references in /etc/mtab and
/etc/fstab
success!
