Subject: Diamond Stelth III S540 32 Mb under Linux
Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 19:12:59 -0600
Hi
I'm trying to install Linux on my computer,
but i'm having problems with graphics card.
What I get now is 400x600 resolution.
My card (Diamond Stelth III S540 32MB, Savage 4) is not on the list (i'm
using RedHat 5.2).
I checked list of supported card for newer versions (I checked both RedHat
and Corel), but the card isn't on the list.
The question is:
is there any version of Linux (actually X) that supports this card, or
patch (or something like that).
Thanx in advance

Should I worry?

Doesn't look like you tried very hard, then. Did you have a look at

It's a Rockwell chipset software modem (host-controller family). Your
modem is incomplete without its Windows software or functional equivalent,
and I'm afraid there is no functional equivalent for other OSes. Sorry :(

The PIII motherboard (Asus P3B-F)is based on Intel 440BX chipset; the

I intend to use only SCSI peripherals where possible.
Which one do you think is more stable (from a server or workstation point

Some of Dell's competitors offer hardware modems as an option. For
example, Micron offers an upgrade to a PCI hardware modem (currently. the
3Com/USR 3CP2976) from the standard winmodem (probably a 3Com 5699) for
$31.
As far as I'm concerned, that $31 well spent on a $1500+ system, even for
Windoze.

Yes, it works with Linux. The easiest way to set it up is to use the
jumpers on the modem card to disable Plug and Play and set the address
conventionally (see the Modem-HOWTO at www.linuxdoc.org).
BTW, the name is FM56-ITU/2, and it is very popular among Linux users for
both its price and performance.

I had the opposite problem.... all I got was the panning and the only size
that would fit the screen was 1280 x 1024... but what you can do is go into
Xconfigurator and do a custom install and select all the screen sizes that
you want to run....

XFree 3.3.5 and 3.3.6 both support the card (At least, as packaged from Redhat.
) If you have access and are willing to reinstall again, try installing RH 6.1
which will support your card out of the box. If not, you can download the
Redhat XFree 3.3.6 source RPMS and build 3.3.6, which will work, but is a 39
meg download. (Or maybe it's 35.. it's still large at 28.8 if you are slow
like me.)

I would certainly like to know the answer to our common problem. You
can check my posting for a lot of things I tried and checked, but I
presume that, even though we have different hardware, the issue is with
the kernel and the loading mechanism. I remember reading something about
the low level drivers having to be loaded first. Unfortunately, I boot my
computer from the first scsi controller (a 2940UW) and so by the time I try
to load the 2d scsi controller driver (1542CF) the high level SCSI modules
are already loaded. Catch 22? I'm not convinced that this loading order
is that critical, but if it is, how do I tell the kernel/boot process to load
the 2 low level drivers *before* the high-level ones and be sure that
the boot isn't going to hang? When I did set it up to load the second driver
at boot time, it hung. Additional bit of info. Nothing gets written to
the system log files, dmesg doesn't have anything related to this after the
^c.

Subject: Re: Problems with D-Link 530TX
Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 02:56:23 GMT
Brian,
I had a similar problem with my D-Link DE220 card when I initially
installed RH 6.1
on my system. I ended up going to DLink's site and downloading from their
driver
database. In this package is a setup program that you run from DOS. I
formatted a
disk with system files only and I then unpacked the downloaded file onto the
disk.
Once that was done, I rebooted using that disk (the RH machine) and entered
the
'setup' program. From there, you can tell it to be PnP (which I do NOT have
enabled),
or you can specify everything from irq to i/o. I used irq 3, and 0x320 for
the i/o range.
That having been accomplished, since there wasn't dlink de-220 support in
the kernel
(as a module or compiled), I used 'ne', set the irq and the address range
and it worked
like a charm.
Here's the site for your download:
http://www.dlink.com/tech/drivers/
Hope this helps. =)

Use Fips which is a freeware program, running in DOS, and then
partition your disk in to 8GB and 5GB. If you are using LILO as
bootmanager, make sure the 5GB partition starts below Cylinder
1024.
Another way is to use Partition Magic. A Windows program and
much more userfriendly than Fips.

That's a known problem. The easiest fix (that I've found) is to go to
SuSe's ftp site and grab the sis.rpm file (I believe it's changed names,
so you may have to hunt around a bit). I'm running their driver, and
it's snappy and bug-free. With some tweaking of the XF86Config file,
you can make your config work, but it will still be slow.

MS might not port their stuff to linux, but then they port it to MacOS.
Anyway the way I see it Corel appear to be heading towards developing wine
so hopefully in a year or two almost all windows apps will run seamlessly on
linux.
(Or is that just wishful thinking on my part and i'll be stuck having to
have two machines forever)
Also if the proposed Corel-Inprise merger goes ahead then MS will own
something like 5% of corel, which could be interesting.
