Subject: Dell QuietKey, XF86Setup, and spurious backquotes
Date: Sun, 07 Feb 1999 10:54:10 -0500
Several people have observed the appearance of spurious backquote (`)
characters
when using XFree86 with the Dell QuietKey keyboard. Does anyone know of
a solution which does not entail replacing the keyboard?
I have only observed the problem under X . The problem does not occur
either under Linux when X is not running, or under Windows 95. The
keyboard
does occasionally lock up under Windows 95, though I have never observed
this
under Linux.
The backquote appears frequently enough so that I need to pay attention
to it, but it does not appear at regular intervals.
I am using RedHat 5.2 (the Macmillan distribution), on a Dell GXa.
I used XF86Setup to set XkbModel equal to "microsoft", "pc101", "pc104",
and "dell101" in /etc/X11/XF86Config -- none of these settings
eliminated the problem,
or even changed the frequency with which the backquote appeared. The
Dell
QuietKey has 104 keys; the device manager under Windows 95 describes it
as "microsoft natural".
I wrote to Dell -- their reply was that they knew nothing about RedHat.
I would be grateful for any help on this!

Date: Sun, 07 Feb 1999 16:30:40 GMT
My experiences... at the bottom is the reason I will never buy cheap
net-cards again:
Got a Linux running as a router between 100TX, 10baseT (still working on
this) and cable modem... The cards break down as:
1. Cable-modem: 3Com 3c900 - PCI 10baseT. Works great! Uses the 3c59x
"Boomerang/Vortex" driver. $42
2. 100TX: 3Com 3c905b - PCI 10/100. $49. Works great.
3. 10baseT - 3c509b - ISA, $29. Can't get it to work in Linux.
The fastest machine in the house has a DECnet (Linksys) 10/100 PCI card
that has no bus-mastering or I/O offloading (like the 3c905c Parallel
Tasking cards have). This machine also has the highest ping time when
connecting to our server. The two 233mmx's running 3c905b's are in the
10-15ms range whereas the PII/350 with the Linksys is in the 33-40ms range.
I haven't tried swapping cards yet, but considering that all machines are
running Win98, voodoo and 128 megs ram, I'm pretty sure the cheap network
card is the culprit. Based on this I wouldn't reccommend buying cheap cards
to try and save a couple $$'s.
Just my $0.02 - take it for what it's worth!

As stated, the switches are really expensive... not really sure a full switch
is better than a hub for small networks, as switches only prevent collisions
on busy nets.
Anyway, I found an IBM ISA 10/100TX adapter on www.ebay.com for $24. Works
great in anything but Linux, however, so stay away from it if that's what
you're planning on using it for.

Subject: Help! PS/2 and ESS 8179 (Sound Blaster) driver conflict on Sony Vaio 737
Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 16:37:08 +0000
Hi all,
I have a problem with a conflict between the sound system and the mouse
driver on my Sony Vaio PCG 737.
The problem is this ..
When the sound drivers are installed (They function beautifully) and the ps/2
mouse driver is BEING USED (ie something reading /dev/psaux) a ticking sound
comes from the audio system for each mouse tick generated. The buttons also
generate the same sound.
History.
Machine came with Windoze 98 installed. All is great (apart from the
OS). The hardware works fine. No Noise. At all!
Install Redhat 5.1. No problems everything working fine (So I thought.
Little did I suspect. I later found out the noise was present but very quiet.)
Neomagic XBF driver superb, KDE great, mp3's sound wonderful under
x11amp. Enlightenment and GNOME fabulous, etc etc.
Linux 2.2.1 kernel turns up. Installed it, Configured it Make(ed) it.
All works fine except a noticeable noise from the speakers on mouse movement. I
checked the config. I checked the BIOS settings. I enabled/disabled PnP in the
BIOS. I moved the io/irq/dma settings in the bios/os. Still the same. I go back
to 2.0.35. Well I'll be damned, the noise is there but quiet.
OK so I check the kernel sb driver. It does not have a 1879 but all
sorts of other drivers which are close.
The track pad is correctly recognised as a PS2 mouse
and the Sound system works beautifully as a Sound Blaster compatible. It is in
fact an Ensoniq ESS 1879 which has 16 bit support. The config is this.
io=0x220
irq=5
dma=1
dma16=5
mpu_io=320
buffer size 65536
I have, I believe tried all variations of the configuration but the problem
persists.
The sound does not emit when a program is not using the mouse port. Nor does it
emit until the sb driver is loaded.
ie .. At the console
insmod sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=5 dma16=1 mpu_io=0x320
cat < /dev/psaux ( I was originally using gpm -t ps2. Same effect)
stroke the mousepad, there is the noise. Sounds like a fluttering sound
CNTRL-C
stroke the mousepad, quiet.
rmmod sb
cat < /dev/psaux
stroke the mouse pad.. all is quiet.
If I try a proper MS PS/2 Mouse in the AUX port, it still generates the noise,
but much quieter. The track pad which works at the same time generates the
louder noise.
Did I break anything? Install windoze again on a spare disk. All is fine!!
ANY IDEAS ANYONE???
I would much appreciate some feedback.
I am, at the moment about to try the OSS-Linux commercial driver. It failed to
install with the 2.2.1 kernel. I will try it against 2.0.35 or 2.0.36.
Incidentaly, 2.0.36 behaves the same as 2.0.35 with my sound problem.
Regards,
Ian

Even though I=B4ve got a differnet mother-board (DFI .., AGP Matrox G200,=
AHA2940 - disks, dds1-dc, cdrom) Kernel paging errors occure sometimes
upon loading of the bttv driver.
Did you try other FSB clock rates?
With my K6-2 400 it is impossible to compile the kernel with FSB 100MHz
(no go at 400, 350, 300 - errors: sig 11 - sig 6). Kernel compile is
ok at any FSB 95Mhz rate. (428, 380, 333). But now I=B4ve some trouble
compiling the QT library (sig 11 :-(( at 95 MHz FSB). Perhaps its a good
idea to replace the processor. Mine has production lable (below voltage
infos) A 9849 EPFW.

Subject: irqtune and RH 5.1?
Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 15:12:18 -0500
Hi,
After investing so much time in trying to find out why my ppp is so slow
on my RH 5.1 installation, I have finally discovered irqtune. I decided
to try it and see whether the problem lies in the irq priority of my
modem (/dev/ttyS3 or /dev/cua3). I successfully installed irqtune, ran
it - and to my dismay received the following output:
/usr/local/irqtune> /sbin/irqtune -V
irqtune: setting system IRQ priority to 3/14
irqtune: loading /sbin/irqtune_mod.o (irqtune_mod)
irqtune: unloading /sbin/irqtune_mod.o (irqtune_mod)
I00/P05: 17515082 timer
I01/P06: 14 keyboard
I02/P07: 0 cascade
I08/P09: 1 + rtc
I10/P11: 217149 NE2000
I13/P14: 1 math error
I14/P07: 94641 + ide0
irqtune: complete
If you examine this list closely, you'll see that IRQ3 and IRQ4 are not
there... But I know that I have both COM3 and COM4 (and disabled COM1
and COM2) in my machine! where are their IRQs? Why didn't irqtune
discover them?
Oh, and by the way, I did run the following:
/home/daniel> setserial -a /dev/ttyS3
/dev/ttyS3, Line 3, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 3000, closing_wait2: infinte
Flags: spd_vhi
Which tells me that the system DOES associate IRQ3 with /dev/ttyS3...
But irqtune can't find it... does it mean pppd can't find it either? if
so, it can explain why my ppp is so slow... but even with that knowledge
I have no clue how to make it find it... (I didn't have this problem on
RedHat 4.2)
I would appreciate any help explaining this mystery and returning irq3
and irq4 to the system.
Thanks,
Daniel

Fujiplay is a program to control Fujifilm digital cameras under
Unix/Linux. It allows you to download pictures, upload pictures, and
delete them. You can also "press the shutter" from the computer.
It has been tested with a MX-700 under Linux but should work with many
other Fuji models, and almost every Unix. The previous version (1.23)
was more than six months old...
Fujiplay (source only) can be found at
http://topo.math.u-psud.fr/~bousch/fujiplay.html
Recent improvements in 1.30:
* Portability fixes
* New debugging features
* Possibility to select any baudrate (bypassing autodetection)
* Longer timeouts, to accomodate slower cameras
* The commands to recharge the flash and take a picture are now
separate, as their combination caused problems on the MX-500.
* New options to setdate, for local time and arbitrary dates
* Documentation of all known MX-700 commands.

Subject: Re: XWindows on a 16MB TNT :( no go.
I missed the original thread on this message, Did the 16MB tnt card
work for X Windows or not? And I was also wondering if anyone has
played with using a virtual display with a 16 MB card. How big can it
get?
Thanks
Bryan Starbuck

Uhm, weiss nicht ob das was aus macht, aber in man lilo.conf steht
"append", nicht "Append". Also, besser klein schreiben.

The HOWTO for this sequence is in /usr/doc/HOTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader
I use it with NT4.0, Win98, Win95, Solaris, SCO, & RedHatLinux5.2...
It works with EVERYTHING so you shouldnt have a problem.
