Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2000 09:18:19 GMT

Hi,

I'm using RedHat 6.1 and a Yamaha CDR400t to
write CDs. Everything is detected fine, but at a
random (?) interval, it seems the OS (or SCSI
card?) is doing a rescan of the SCSI bus. Of
course, this is disastrous when writing a CDRom.
The problem is I don't have a clue of where this
rescan is forced. Is this a Linux issue, or is
this something my BusLogic card does?
I had no problems writing CDs in Windows NT, 95
or 98..
Thanks a lot for your help!
Tom.

How can I check out my model of sound card under RH 6.0? Another

I may be wrong, but I thought you were supposed to use pcmcia.img if
your network card was a pcmcia card. I believe that bootnet.img is only
for isa/pci network cards.

this might be an obvious question... but did you actually start the ssh
daemon?

The 'authentication error... no further authentication methods available'
suggests your system might have been trying to revert to 'rsh'... and it
wasn't available...

usual way to start sshd (daemon) is to put a script in one of your runlevels
(2 or 3... depending on what's appropriate for your system - I mention this
since SuSE starts in 2... while many others start in 3)

In /etc/rc.d/init.d... maybe an 'sshd' script something like:

#! /bin/sh

case "$1" in
    start)
        echo "starting sshd..."
        /usr/local/sbin/sshd (or whatever is appropriate)
        exit 0
        ;;
esac

----

Then...

chmod +x sshd

ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S90sshd

(or something fairly high... not conflicting with another service starting)

I don't know how to get your screen to turn off (I've been wondering how to
do that myself - though, I think KDE screws things up there - I can't ever
get any monitor to shut off under KDE), but you may simply need to unplug
and plug in the mouse after coming from suspend. At least in my case, if
I've turned off the touch pad (which I do most of the time, because it
annoys me), I always need to plug the mouse in _after_ X starts up, or it
doesn't work.

Good luck,

Im using a HP dj 600 printer under linux. It works fine but only in the
highest resolution and it uses a lot of ink. Is it possible to speed up
the printing process and to reduce the ink lake on the paper? Or do I
have to save the print file on the windows part of the hard drive and
print it out using ghost view?

put in an array.

Personally, I would prefer to have 16x150Mhz Pentiums instead of one
700Mhz Athlon, because a multiprocessor system should be a lot more
stable if done right.
One processor hangs and corrupts its kernel, 15 are still alive, and one
of them restarts the dead one ...

named, inetd, all the *d programs evenly distributed between processors
seems to even out the slowdown in a beter way than one single, but very
powerful processor. I can't think of any mathematical reason why, at
least not now, but I have tried more-than-4-processor systems, and the
performance impact on starting one more task is almost not identifiable,
whereas it can halve the performance on 1-processor systems ...

Hi Karsten!

If you happen to use the aps-filter for printing, then you should check
/etc/apsfilterrc, somewhere you should find something like "quality", maybe
there are even some clever comments on how to use this. Play with this

There's *no*way* it'll do anything at all w/o the CPU!! Many modern
mobos won't boot w/o memory either, not even beep. You simply can't
tell if the mobo's busted unless you have a godo known CPU AND RAM in

Just to follow up. I flashed the BIOS with the latest version and the hard
disk is now seen. I tried this BIOS version when this board was in a Windows
98 computer and I had nothing but problems with them. No mention was made in
the release notes about addressing a hard disk identification fix. Oh well,
now to see what the error message is about when shutting down that was not
there before.

Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address ??? ??? ??? Just

As a follow up, the problem is resolved.
I was using Linux4Win at first, and the 'warm'

not 'give up' it's setting. I am dual booting now and all is well.

As I understand it, as the previous poster said, when you use DirectCD
in this way, it puts a UDF filesystem on the CD. UDF drivers
are *not* part of a standard linux install. So, you have two options. You
could use DirectCD, I *think*, to wrap an ISO9660 (i.e. standard CD)
filesystem around the UDF on the CD-RW disks. Note that this will
prevent further "packet writing" -- you'll have to erase the whole disk
and start over if you want to write more on it. This is probably called
"closing" the disk or some such in DirectCD -- I wouldn't know, I've
never used it. Or you could download and compile the UDF drivers for Linux.

Of course, a third option is to just put the burner on the Linux box and
use xcdroast.

No, you're right. bootnet.img is for ftp/http/nfs installs. The only issue
if whether pcmcia.img has pcmcia cdrom support, but if it didn't, why would

Both drives should have entries in /dev. The CDR should be /dev/hdd and the
DVD should be /dev/hdc. If you go into your /dev directory, I imagine there
will be symlink call /dev/cdrom pointing to one of these.

Just create a new symlink for whichever device doesn't work. Assuming this
is the DVD drive:

To create a symlink, use (as root, in the /dev directory)
    ln -s hdc dvd

You will then have a device called /dev/dvd which is an alias for your dvd
drive. If you then edit /etc/fstab (again as root) and change the reference
to /dev/cdrom to /dev/dvd, that should make your dvd work. Flip this around
if it's the CD-R that doesn't work.

My RH6.1 system has nifty CDROM automounting; I'm not sure if this will work
on the second drive automatically. I suspect not, but my X is broken at the
moment, so I can't check. Any takers?

CDs don't use FAT32. If you are using packet writing software - ie., you can
add & delete files at will, like a big floppy disk - then the CD will be
formatted with the UDF filesystem.

Further, if these are two physical machines, are you sure the CDROM on the
Linux box can read CD-RWs? Many can't.

You could
(1) Network the two machines and skip the CDs altogether - lot of hassle but
brings other benefits
(2) Blank the RW & burn it using you normal CD-R recording software
(probably EZCD Creator), which should make a ISO9660 format CD, as long as
the Linux CD-ROM wil read RW disks.
(3) Use a CD-R disk - a bit desperate, I know
(4) If it's the same machine, simply mount the windows partition & copy the
files directly.
(5) Find out how to make Linux read UDF disks. I imagine this will involve
kernel compilation, but I'm not sure if there's any UDF support under Linux.
Anyone?

http://come.to/cdspeed will show you how fast the CD is. Faster than 24x is
NOT totally a waste, expecially with the TrueX drives mentioned in earlier
posts.

Further to the earlier posts...

Assuming the CD on the Linux box is new (sounds like it), it probably
supports reading CD-RWs. So blank the RW & burn it using EZ CD Creator
instead. That should work.

Or go buy some NICs and network the two machines. Rather a lot of work
though ;o)

Does anyone have or know where to find a good XF86Config file to work with a
G400?

The way my machine's set up at the moment (new installation of Red Hat 6.1)
two of the higher resolution modes don't work properly.

thanks,

Gareth
