First of all, there is a special newsgruup for tape drives which you wil=

probably find very useful.
linux.dev.tape
to use this drive you have to use the device /dev/ht0 and /dev/nht0
later is NOT self-rewinding.
And programs like kbakup or at least taper
try=20
tar cf /dev/nht0 <dir-to-backup>

Why subj does't work ?
What it need else?
As P&P it didn't detected by the system.
IO and IRQ from cat/proc/pci
pnpdump don't see it, of course
(modem works under Y2K)

You don't have to. The ttyS* devices should have mode 660, uucp.uucp , as
long as your "uucp" binary is setUID/setGID uucp.

This is going to sound odd but bare with me.

Im helping out with a volunteer project to convert approx 90 old 486s
that have been donated to the locat YMCA. The aim is to install a
workable version of Linux on these machines to convert them into X
terminals with applications running off a server.

All the machines have ethernet cards of some sort. The machines came
with no documents from the doner, but some had ancient Novell Networking
software running on win 3.0

All of the folks in our project are newbies who are at a loss when it
come to NICs. Finding a driver wouldn't be a prob if we could find out
what sort of cards these are

According to VMware, they do not yet support XFree86 4.0.1. This may be the
source of the problems when running VMware. Does CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE kill
the Xserver?

If you are new to Linux, Turbolinux is probably not the best choice (nor is
this the right group for posting this question...).

I'd recommend Mandrake instead, which comes with a wide variety of desktop
icons in the default install.

Hello,

I consider buying a Terratec Soundsystem DMX Xfire 1024 soundcard, but I
cannot find it (yet?) in the hardware compatibility HOWTO or @ the OSS
website. (But that may just be because I don't know what chip it has).
Does anyone have information for me, or even experience?

when i bought my first pc (386dx with 4megs ram) i would read the
mainboard manual and find this swich, too. it never worked. i tried
and tried to switch the turbo on/off by hitting ctr-alt-+/-. i suppose
one can do that at a certain point in time during startup, but i never
found out (u know how much effort is put into designng
mainboard-manuals ("what the hell does this setting mean? well i'll
look into the manual. ah! 'enabled = feature enabled, disabled =
feature disabled'. hmm very informative..."). i suppose the switching
just doesn't work.. if i am wrong, i'd love to be corrected..

Subject: SCSI problem - AHA 1542
From: janpla <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 03:59:11 -0700

I have an AHA 1542 card that I once got from an old (obviously)
computer. I have got as far as installing it and it's BIOS writes
things when I turn on the PC. The kernel (2.2.14) can see it, but
the things it writes are a bit odd:

Unable to abort command for target 0
Unable to abort command for target 0
Trying DEVICE RESET for target 0
Unable to abort command for target 0
Sent bus reset to scsi host 0
Unable to abort command for target 0

- after which it tells that it has detected a disk sda (This
disk has an actual size, as opposed to what is found later).
Then it goes on to targets 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, finding disks
sdb, etc.up to sdg, all of size 0 MB. The interesting thing is
that I only have 1 disk

After having spent long time on the above procedure - more than
15 mins (?) - it does it all over again, this time apparently
detecting some dimensional data on each device.

The reason it takes so long, I assume, is that it does a lot of
timing out. But do I do to solve this problem? And of course
I can't fdisk any of the devices I seem to have. I have obviously
done something wrong, but what?

/jan

Look at Samba for NT Server functions on a Linux server.
No, you don't have to remove the Win95 box from the NT domain to make it work with
linux...

Don't probe for LUNs on the SCSI devices... Check the card's BIOS
settings... (ctrl-A when it boots up) Make sure everything is as it
should be.

Since it says it's (NE)2100 compatible, you could give the driver for
"AMD Lance and PCnet (AT1500 and NE2100) support" a try.
This driver might come precompiled with your Linux distribution as a
module named lance.o. If not, you'll have to compile it yourself from a
kernel source; in menuconfig this driver has the name of the quoted
decription above.

Hope this helps you out.

I am runing Redhat 6.2 on a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop with an ATI Rage
Mobility - P (8 meg ram) video card. In win98, the card will drive my
external monitor at a resolution of 1600x1200 @ 32 bit color. In linux,
though, it reverts to 8 bit color (I think - the color is fairly poor).
Does anyone know of a hack to work around this?

You may also want to look at the actual chips on the boards and post the
observations, you may find out easier what they rerally are.
