I have mounted the CDROM and brought up the CD player in both Gnome and
KDE. The counter goes up on the player but I get no sound. CD ROM is a
Creative 48X. For those tech support people out there, yes the volume is
turned up :)

Works fine under Win98. Any thoughts on what the problem might be. I am
somewhat new to Linux so I know enough to be dangerous.

Buy a cheap(ish) symmetrical 3-button mouse (like Logtech). Remap the
buttons (dead easy, look in XF86Config and gpm).

Make it fit your left hand with some plastic granules that soften in hot
water (DIY stores sell these) or epoxy putty, or even play-do.

Keith.

I've tried both boards.

I had problems with DMA (irq timeout, DMA disabled messages in logfile)

The Asus board has been problem free.

Subject: Changing from Internal Modem to External Modem
Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2000 22:01:28 GMT

Hi folks. I've just found out the internal modem in my newly-created
Linux box is a WinModem, and won't work with Linux. Fine, cool, it's a
14.4 K and I wanted to get a faster one anyways. So, I'm about to buy
an External Modem (as from my reading, just about any External modem is
supported by Linux) and use it.

As I am extremely new to Linux, I have a question for which an answer
would be greatly appreciated.

Do I need to rebuild my kernel to remove support for the old, internal
modem before I pull it out of the PC? I looked at the options in my
menuconfig settings, and I didn't see anything for Modems. So, I'm
guessing no. But I'm sure a linux guru out there could confirm or deny
this for me...

Currently, my plan of attack is:

1) Login as root, and remove my /dev/modem symbolic link (the external
modem will not use the same port as the internal modem).
2) Shutdown and halt my system.
3) Pull out the old, unusable modem.
4) Connect the new, shining, linux-happy external modem to the Serial
port, and plugging it in.
5) Start up my box, logging in as root and creating /dev/modem as a
symbolic link to the correct /dev/ttySn device.
6) Wave to the cheering crowd, smell one of the roses thrown to my feet
and bow gracefully.

So, except for #6, is this all I need to do? If I'm seriously missing
something, I'd appreciate a forewarning. :)

Other details: it's a 486 box (revived from the dead) and I'm running
Red Hat 6.0 on it.

Thanks!
Ed

Here is a related question: I want to be able to connect MIDI cables from
my SB128 to my MIDI-capable Radio Shack music keyboard. After
loading all the SB128 stuff that I can, 'sndstat' shows this entry:

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices:
0: ES1371

Now, when I use one of the Linux MIDI players (that apparently want to
talk to /dev/midi), I would expect that this would get sent to my music
keyboard, but all my attempts so far to do that have failed.

Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks

Mine didn't work at first either.. but then I think it it started working
after I setup some sound card stuff in conf.modules. Id explain exactly

if you do an 'lsmod' does it list sound card modules as being loaded?

Nope-- sorry guys, that .RPM is for the controller-based (hardware) PCI
modem, not for PCI Winmodems. If you think you have the hardware modem,
please read http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/3cp5610.txt for setup

Two possible hitches:
1) Some Packard Bell machines behave strangely when the modem is
removed. OTOH, I don't think they used winmodems the those machines.

B) If you have on-board COM ports, be sure to reenable the corresponding
port in your BIOS so that you can use COM2 or whatever the 14.4K modem
   was claiming. Ditto for a multi-I/O card-- jumper-enabled COM2.

Have fun!

The server through which I'm composing and sending this message runs on a
300-MHz K6-2...has been since I upgraded my main workstation to a 450-MHz
K6-III a couple of weeks ago. I had also run Linux on the workstation when
it had the K6-2, and when it had a 200-MHz K6 before that. The very first
computer on which I installed Linux used an Am386SXL-25 (kernel version was
0.99pl14). That's four different AMD processors (had a couple of Cyrix
processors in between, too), and Linux has run like a champ on all of 'em.
(Well, I haven't tried it with the K6-III yet (that box has only Win98 on it
right now), but I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work.)

You should always recompile foreign modules to match your kernel. If you are RPM

I've installed rh 6.1 on a AcceleRaid 250 with a 3 drive raid 5 setup
and I had no problems. I believe the 1100 uses the same driver. Note
that the DAC drivers is not SCSI, but block. It's been a while, but
I don't remember doing anything special except setting up the raid
before installing and installing a small boot partion first.

Subject: Problem with Conner CFS540A IDE disk at Boot on 2.2.14
Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2000 20:25:50 -0500

Good day,

I have been working on Converting from 2.0.35 to 2.2.14 in order to support
greater than 16MB of Storage on my Compaq P.C.

During my testing of 2.2.14, I've noticed that some of my error messages appear
to be Hard Drive related.

I then noticed a strange difference in the /var/log/messages file between these
two Releases:

1. On 2.0.35, approximately 40 lines after the Boot, I get the following
     message:
     hda: Conner Peripherals 540 MB - CFS540A, 516MB w/64kB Cache,
             CHS=1596/13/51
This all looks correct to me.

2. On 2.2.14, at the same place in the Log, I only get the following message:
     hda: 233MB, CHS=720/13/51

Not only is the Cylinder number wrong, but I also feel that since none of the
descriptive information is displayed, the Kernel may not be recognizing my true
Hardware and instead is using some type of defaulted IDE Driver.

Would someone be able to tell my why I'm not getting the same information
in both Systems?
Could someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong when chosing a Kernel
Option that is causing this problem?

Thanking you very much if you can help me in solving this problem.

I have a strong feeling that if this problem is fixed then probably my Storage
problems will be fixed also.

Yours truly,

Frank Krauss

I have an AWE 64 that I (finally) got fully working (yay!)
now I'm using sfxload to throw patch files into the MIDI
memory (a pitiful 512k by default - I'm thinking of upping
it, but that's prolly gonna be the subject of a later thread...)
anyhow... I have a couple of 512k patch files I can use fine
I d/loaded a 4MB patch file and remember reading *somewhere*
that it's possible to use a larger patch file, by swapping in
only the instruments that you are actually using...
is this true? or do I remember completely wrong?

Fuzzy

hmm... now where can I get some more memory for my card instead...

Subject: Upgrading SCSI cards on Mandrake 7?
Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 02:06:10 GMT

Hi,

Does anyone know how to go about upgrading a SCSI card in Linux? I had
the Zip zoom ISA (adaptec 152x) and now have an adaptec 2903b (aic7850)
PCI.

Mandrake 7, on boot, detected the loss of the old card and the install
of the new. I made the mistake of saying keep the settings for the old
card... now can't figure out how to get it to quit trying to find it.
It detects the new one and ignores it... so I can't use the zip drive or
scanner. I switched the hardware back to the old setup, then to the
new again, just to see if it would allow me to remove the old card
setup, no luck.

I've edited /etc/conf.modules per the few things I could find on the
web, to no avail. Anyone know where Mandrake stores the information so
I can update it by hand?

BTW, the hardware all works fine; I have a dual boot with Win95 and both
the zip and scanner run fine.

On another note, if you don't have a PS/2 mouse, don't 'upgrade' to
Mandrake 7... it can't detect anything else. Pretty major bug.

Thanks,

Vanye
