A very common reply on your part. As a matter of fact, it is
verbatim to similar replies you give to others who comment on your
style. Yes, it has no technical content germaine to the group, but it is
posted to avoid more such posts in some lengthy flamefest. That is why I
bothered posting.

I did in fact help out in a recent Rambus vs. SDRAM war. So, I *do*
contribute to this ng. You just jumped in, shooting, scarred by your
life in the .storage group. Ron, I used to silently side with you when
you were right (which, BTW, isn't always, but happens, like for
everyone) in your initial flamefests on that group, but it is obvious to
those who have spent any length of time in that group that you have been
deeply burned by the behavior of others and now immediately resort to
insulting when such isn't called for.

You've gotten farther than I have. I'm a Linux newbie and ran into the
same problem with the 3Com 3C905C.

I was able to find a 3COM driver download for Linux, but was at a loss
to figure out what to do with the file I got. How do you compile it?

Just a guess, but is insmod intended to insert the new driver as an
option under the modconf menus?

Eh? What problem? I've been running 3c905's for years and years. Nice
cards, once the driver settled down at around 0.48c.

Dear me dear me. The same way you compile anything else. Read the
instructions and do what they say. But WHY do you need a new driver?
Isn't the old one good enough?

: Just a guess, but is insmod intended to insert the new driver as an

Eh? Come again? Man insmod, and read the Modules-HOWTO.

I think you need to edit your conf.modules and add the line

  alias eth0 3c59x

If Corel is a debian derivative, then you might have to add this line
in /etc/modultils/* instead. See the instructions there.

Subject: How to supress Extra FormFeed when Printing to a remote Print Server?
Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 14:34:43 -0600

Our users require that a banner page be printed as the first page of each print job so
that they can
identify their printout.

We have set up two print queues, and this was working OK on a Linksys Print Server.
We have changed
the Print Server to a Intel NetportExpress 10/100 so that we could hook-up a serial
line printer in
the same location.

The problem we are now experiencing is that the printer is now ejecting a blank page.

We have tried adding ":sf:", ":ff=:" to the lp0 entry, and creating an input filter
which didn't fix
the problem.

Using ":ff=:" in the first printcap entry, causes the printer to suppress all form
feeds. While
using ":sf:" suppresses the form feed for the header page and the extra form feed.
Creating an
input filter, causes the job to not print and it stays in the queue.

Any ideals as to how we can suppress the extra form feed?

NOTE: Both postscript.cfg & textonly.cfg have *_SEND_EOF set to "NO" on the remote
print queue.

Thanks,
Scot

Based on the info provided, I couldn't find an entry in the database,
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/20000307a.html, try locating the FCC id,
it's printed on the modem, then go back to the database. The fact that
it works under windoze is meaningless for the most part, many windoze
dependent devices exist and will only work with windoze. Try it in DOS,
if it works there it will work with linux.

Can you provide more details about your setup (Xfree revision and config

And what says the Xserver about the chipset? Is it NM2200 or higher?

Ok. Fine. I did. (I had extra time on my hands today, only took me
five minutes...)

Search: author: email address & keyword: "VIA" = 3500 hits
author: email address & keyword: "Intel" = 1800 hits

From this, you extrapolate that John has a some sort of secret VIA
agenda? You've read all these posts and objectively categorized them as
pro-VIA or pro-Intel? You've carefully and dutifully culled and combed
all of his posts? Want to share your interpretation, detailed please,
with this ng of all of John's posts in this context and how this backs
up your accusation?

I don't know John from a hole in the ground, but these accusation
are preposterous.

Wow, and I thought this quick search was a waste of my time. How
much time did you waste, Ron?

Buf if you want to overclock to 133fsb, bx chipset doesn't give you 1/2 agp
divider, that may cause problem with the agp vga card.

I'd say bx is better for people buying 100fsb p3, not overclocking.
via 694x (only should buy 694x now) is good for people buying 133fsb p3 or
550E overclock to 733.

It's a fact that via's udma66 implementation has problem, it doesn't
archieve udma66 performance as intel's 810,820, promise udma66 controller.
(see Tom's hardware newest article about this).
But this is not a big issue, as today's best udma66 hd only has 25M/s
internal transfer rate, so via's udma66 controller can archieve udma33
performance is ok for this. Or buying intel bx mb you only get udma33,
that's fine too.

AGP issue is also not a big deal, even via's agp performance is not good as
intel, that's reasonable, you get what you pay. You can get a via 694x mb at
$90 (tyan trinity 400 from buycom), but good brand bx mb is still at least
$100.
So don't be surpirsed after you buy a via mb and find out its udma66 and agp
performance is not good as intel's.

Any idiot knows that Deja figires that size are meaningless.

Do a real Deja search on:

via chipset
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Feb 15 2000
100 per page

There's 83.

Then do:
intel chipset

Check out gPhoto: http://www.gphoto.org. It supports several Fuji models,
but doesn't specifically mention yours. It could just be that yours is too
new to appear in the supported database, but would work. It's certainly
worth a try.

Another option would be to buy a CF or SmartDisk reader (whichever your
camera uses) and transfer files with it. You'll get the bonus of a
substantial speed boost, particularly if your reader functions as an IDE
device rather than as an external device on a parallel or USB port or
something (some of those may be nasty to configure, too).

Subject: Which portable for easy RH Linux use??
Date: 08 Mar 2000 21:36:45 GMT

Hello,
I am interested in getting a relatively cheap ($1K or less) portable that
will load and run the latest Red Hat Linux distribution without ANY problems.
This means
a reasonably fast machine with decent memory and hard drive that is hardware
compatible with Linux. This means that the CD-Rom will work, the modem will
work, the display will work, and the sound will work.
     Any suggestions? John

Subject: Problems, Intel Management Adapter 100+

Hi,

I'm getting lost when it comes to making my network card work properly
under Red Hat Linux 6.1. The card is an Intel Management Adapter 100+
(seems to be supported in the eepro100 module). The card is working
perfectly under Win95, and it is connected to a 3Com ISDN LANmodem (with
an integrated 4-port hub).

The problem is that the system hangs during booting if the default setup
is used (/etc/conf.modules says just "alias eth0 eepro100 "). Using the
interactive boot option and skipping the network service allows the
system to boot. Using /etc/ifconfig it seems like eth0 is configured
properly (IP 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.224 which are correct
values according to 3Com doc), buth eth0 and lo are down. Attempts at
loading a web page or pinging a machine on the Internet fails
(naturally). When I'm trying to start the network services using

/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network start

or

/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network reload

or

/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network restart

these commands seem to hang. However, it somehow activates the card,
because I'm then allowed to access the Internet. Also, /etc/ifconfig
then reports eth0 to be up and running.

I have also tried adding the IRQ (10) and the I/O address (0xFCC0) to
the /etc/conf.modules file. As a result the system boots without
hanging. However, it reports "Delaying eth0 initialization" and leads to
a non-configured network device. Attempts at starting the network from
the command line then fail.

Naturally, what I want is to boot the machine straight ahead and have
the network up and running by itself. Although having a lot of
programming experience on Linux (and other OS) I'm not that much into
network config issues. Any clues from the crowd? Please cc any replies
to my email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I'm no regular reader of this
newsgroup.

Thanks a lot

Subject: No way to install Linux (Redhat 6.1 or Slackware 7.0) on my computer
Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 22:40:10 +0100

Help !

No way to install Linux (Redhat 6.1 or Slackware 7.0) on my computeur.
It seems that the Hard Disk drive is not recognised or I've a error message
"Impossible to write on your hard drive, protected ?".
My HD drive is an IBM Hard Disk : 371350 DJNA (Deskstar 22GXP)13.5 Go
7200t/mn.
It's partionned with 3 FAT32 partitions C:, D:, E:. I've installed Windows
98 in the first one and I'would like to reserve the second one for Linux,
the third one for user files.
The mother board is an ABIT BE6 II with a Pentium III 500Mhz.

I've made the same installation on my laptop computer Toshiba Satellite
300CDS and all is OK.

Is ther someone who has encountered such a type of problem. Is there any
solution ? Is the problem related to the HD, the Mother Board or the Bios
configuration ?

Thanks for your feedback !

Saverio

I got a Toshiba Satellite. Everything works (now there's Lucent
WinModem support).
