The LINUX operating system has been COMPLETELY
INSTALLED on this computer and it runs great. The system
comes complete with Netscape Communicator, the X Window
System, the gcc C compiler, and lots of other great programs.
This computer is a Dell Pentium 90 system with a 520mb hard
drive and 16mb of RAM. The system INCLUDES A 14-INCH
DELL MONITOR and an ethernet card with AAUI, 10baseT
(twisted pair) and coax connectors.
This computer is in great condition. It was purchased legitimately
from the Boeing Surplus store. Boeing has recently decided that
Pentium 90s are obsolete. Their loss is our gain.
This is a really cheap way to learn more about Linux on a
computer anyone can afford!
This machine is being auctioned off on EBay. To participate
in the auction, please visit:

Thanks for participating!

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
what does PTBL stand for and how is it related to the actual
disk geometry? I checked ide.txt but this didn't make it exactly clear
to me.
I bought a 10GB HD the other day and on booting the kernel shows
2 different CHS values. First: CHS=20928/16/63 and later:
[PTBL] [1313/255/63].
If I understand things correctly the first CHS pair is the actual
disk geometry and PTBL has todo with a translation because the max
value for the number of cylinders as supplies by the BIOS is 1024.
Correct? But then why does the IDE drives use the BIOS information???
greetings,
Peter

simply add the hp850 driver from uli wortmann and recompile
you may need the remove the ^M

A printer driver for the HP670, HP690, HP850, HP855
HP870, HP890, HP1100 and HP1600 color printers.
To be used with the ghostscript printing system.
These drivers are currently not in the official distrib.
Please report all problems to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 19:55:20 +0100
Hi,
I installed the 2.2.1 kernel on my PC, and now my Dynalink
ISDN adapter is not working anymore. It worked flawlessly
on the 2.0.36 kernel. I complied the HiSax drives as a module,
as stated in the docs, but when I try to load the module, the
driver tries 3 times to see the card and then fails. I didn't
change anything in the isapnp.conf file and if I boot the
2.0.36 kernel, everything works again.
Thanks,
Dennis.

Hi all,
I'm investigating some alternatives for a lab imaging application, and
I'd like to find out whether there is any support for the Kodak DCS
series of professional digital cameras (e.g. DCS 315) under linux. Some
of the cameras have SCSI interfaces, but most of the newer ones have
firewire. Has anyone had any success getting them to work under linux.
For this application it will be necessary to be able to control the
camera as well as download images.
Any advice welcome.

The driver that ships with RH5.2 is just lame... there was a
post to USENET about two months ago quoting the author of the drivers
as saying they weren't very good, and recommending 2.2.x. ALSA is a
good option as well.

I had a similar problem with RH5.2. I solved it (eventually) by setting
the jumpers on my modem to 'hardwire' the IRQ and I/O settings. My
modem has a pnp jumper setting (like yours) which I disabled.
I disabled COM2 in my computers BIOS and set the modem jumpers to make
it sit in the vacant COM2 position (I also ensured that the IRQ's and
other settings had no conflicts with other devices).
Hope this helps - best of luck

Is there any particular reason that your modem is on /dev/ttyS2? I assume you are
aware that
it is sharing IRQ 4 with /dev/ttyS0? What is on /dev/ttyS0?

You might try setting spd_hi or spd_vhi, although I shouldn't think spd_normal would

Is that extra blank line really in your printcap? If so, then you don't have an input
filter
defined for lp. There must be no whitespace after the backslashes and no blank lines
in a
printcap entry. If these entries were automatically generated by the apsfilter
install process
then you should report it as a bug to the apsfilter maintainer. If you made these
entries
yourself then you should re-read the section of the printing Howto called "The Sytax
of
/etc/printcap", and the following:
3.9 An `/etc/printcap' gotcha
=============================
Two `/etc/printcap' files can look identical and yet one works and
the other doesn't.
See if `lpc stat' reports a printer called ` :'. The last character
on a continued line must be a backslash. If there are whitespace
characters after the backslash then it doesn't register the next line
as a continuation.

Subject: Ensoniq setup problem
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 03:16:04 GMT
I am a Linux newbie and am having difficulty configuring my sound
card. The machine is an old Gateway P5-133. The sound card is an OEM
Ensoniq Soundscape 16bit ISA PnP. I don't know the exact
model...maybe someone could tell me how to determine the model of the
card.
Anyway, I have installed RedHat 5.2. I ran sndconfig and it detects
my sound card and sees all the correct interrupts, dma settings, etc.
Everything looks fine. When it tries to play the sample sound,
however, I get the following error.
ISAPNP Error
LD setting verify failed, this may not be a problem. Try adding
(VERIFYLD N) to the top of your script.
Error occurred executing request 'LD 3' on or around line 166 ---
further action aborted.
I don't really know how to interpret this. Any ideas/suggestions?

Sounds like I've got the exact same setup. My NICs are Netgear model FA310TX.
The hub doesn't care what OS you're using so that shouldn't be a problem. I
don't know about any other Netgear models, but the FA310TX works just
beautifully. Linux recognizes the chipset in the NIC as a DEC Tulip
(something to keep in mind if you want to recompile a kernel) It will probably
be best to use TCP/IP as your networking protocol . All I use samba for is
accessing the printer on my windoze 98 box, so I'm afraid I can't be too much
help there. I'm still trying to RTFM :o) (I'm not sure what you mean by
"straight network them together'. If you're talking about using netbeui I'll
stick my neck out and say heck no. ) If you want to "share" directories on
your linux box or access any shares in the windoze box you will just have to
learn samba. Sorry. Look for docs and other resources for that at

Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 16:35:43 -0700
I'm pretty stumped on this one, maybe someone here has some ideas.
The system:
Pentium 100
Redhat Linux 5.2
Kernal 2.2.1 (freshly upgraded)
Intel 82371 family IDE controller, 2 hard drives, one generic IDE/ATAPI
CD-ROM.
Using autofs to automount the CD on /mnt/cdrom.
When I try to play a music CD (usually I use kscd, but I've had similar
troubles with other CD players as well, I'll put a disk in the tray &
close it, but kscd just sits there saying "Ejected." I can work around
the problem by looking at /mnt/cdrom, at that point autofs kicks in and
tries to mount the CD. It errors out of course, since it's a music CD,
but after that, I can start kscd & play my music CD just fine. When I
use data CDs, autofs automounts the CDs without problems, but every time
I change music CDs, I have to go through the ritual of mounting the CD,
watching the drive spin up, wait for the can't mount this CD error, then
start up kscd to play my music.
Any way to get the CD player to behave itself?

I don't know about CRU, but www.mylex.com is a good one. DAC960PG 4 meg cache
faor about $480 at www.shopper.com. I haven't run it in Linux box yet, but
the support is supposedly good, and they are FAST under Netware.

right, so why not have a significant-sized buffer? cdrecord does,
and lets you set it to pretty much whatever you want.

Subject: ide-scsi emulation for ATAPI cd writing problem
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 02:08:54 -0600
Hello,
I am trying to get CD writing to work properly under Linux and I am
having some problems. I know you have to use scsi emulation so I
recompiled my kernel without IDE ATAPI CD support and with both
generic scsi, and scsi CD modules. However when I try to load the
scsi modules I get the following message:
scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi : 1 host.
Vendor: MITSUMI Model: CR-2801TE Rev: 1.07
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
scsi0 channel 0 : resetting for second half of retries.
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
aborting command due to timeout : pid 2,
scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 1 Request Sense 20 00 00 10 00
Then the window freezes and I can only kill the process. If I do
a lsmod the scsi-ide module is loaded but unitialized. I am running
kernel 2.2.1 with Redhat 5.1 with a Mitsumi 2801 CDR. Any help would
be appreciated.
Thanks!
Ryan
