Okay, I know the party line about Winmodem support under Linux.
I know it's a bad idea, I know they're junk, etc. However, I've
got a new Sony VAIO with an integrated Conexant (nee Rockwell) HCF
PCI modem that I would like to see work under Linux. (It's the
VAIO PCG-Z505R, the slimline one.)
I know the Lucent winmodems have support in the works; is there any
similar project working for the Rockwell beasts? I'm sure I'm not
the only one (modern laptop users especially!) in this boat. Just
wondering what - if anything - is out there.
Thanks!

Not with PCI. The BIOS does the remapping of devices so they don't
conflict in I/O space range. With PCI, there's no more such things
as "IRQ conflicts" (with OS that have their sh*t together like ours,
anyway), so it's OK if they overlap.

Hi all:
Is there a linux application that will allow the use of all the features
of, say, the 3Com v.90 modems, i.e., data/fax/voicemail/speakerphone?
If not that modem, any other one? I'm using RH 6.1, if it matters...
Thanks in advance.

Lilo needs to be updated to reflect your new configuration. You'll need
to edit the /etc/lilo.conf file and change the boot and root entries
from /dev/hdc to /dev/hde.
boot=/dev/hde
root=/dev/hde1 (or whatever partition you're using)
type 'lilo' at the command line and it will read the new configuration
file and update the boot loader.
For more info, type 'man lilo.conf'

David,
I am considering of purchasing HP970 cse or cxi (what's the
difference?), but am wondering
whether it will give me a good output from my linux. I had HP870 and 890
before. When I used cdj550, output
image color plots are pretty bad. When I used cdj870, the printouts are
much better. What driver
may I use in HP970? Double sided will be nice, but not cruicial. Thanks.

See the following
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/tips/raid/RAID-INDEX.html
which does have a few errors like for example stating that lilo does not
work with root/boot raid unless the boot partition is on a seperate
non-raid partation. If you patch lilo from the raid SRPMS then it will
work with raid 1.
What you want is raid 0 though.
See the following howto which is better.
http://ostenfeld.dk/~jakob/Software-RAID.HOWTO
If you are going to setup raid then the best thing to do is grab the
latest stable kernel 2.2.14 and get the raid patchs from
Download http://people.redhat.com/mingo/raid-patches/raid-2.2.14-B1 and
patch the sources then compile ensuring that you enable raid0.
Or alternatively just use the kerenal that comes with Redhat 6.1 and use
the graphicial install which allows you to set up raid devices.

The Cse/Cxi difference is in the bundled software or 220v/110v; I
forget which. They're the same printer.
Under Linux, the best print modes of the 970 are not supported; HP
will not document this device's flavor of PCL.
Under Linux, the duplexing feature is also not supported. From what I
understand, the latest theory about it involves the driver sending
scan lines from the bottom up for the back of each page. It'll take a
little coding work, once the proper codes are figured out, to do this
under Linux.
In any case, the 970 is a poor choice for Linux use at this time.
Consider the Epson Stylus line (see http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
for Epson support status), or for typical home use the Lexmark Optra
40 (a Postscript inkjet which now goes for $79 at Egghead).

There's no hand-tuned driver for the 970 like there is for the 870.
You can try various cdj drivers, but none supports the variable drop
sizes of the latest "PhotoRET" scheme used, IIRC, on the 970.
> Double sided will be nice, but not cruicial. Thanks.
Unfortunately I don't think any of these does duplex. I'm not aware
of any duplexing inkjets that are fully supported by the usual free
software.

I don't know what alpha software you're using, but the Trident Blade3D
(aka Cyberblade) is supported in recent XFree86 distributions. I'm using
it with XFree86 3.3.6, as delivered with Mandrake 7.0, on a Compaq
notebook without incident. See my web page on the Compaq for details:

Well, it could be that whatever alpha software you're using is the source
of the problem. It's also possible that this is some weird mouse driver
issue, especially if it's a USB mouse. (Linux USB support is still pretty
flakey, although mice should work pretty well by now. Certainly I have no
problems with the USB Logitech Trackman Marble I've got on my iMac.)

I believe there are LocalTalk/Ethernet converter adapters available, but I
don't know a lot about them. Try asking at a Macintosh computer store.
Another possibility would be to track down one of the (very rare) PC
LocalTalk adapters that are supported in Linux. Check the Linux kernel
options for the names of the two or three models that Linux supports.
As to the rest, I don't know if the Mac Classic II is capable of running
any X server software. This thing's got a dinky 9" color screen, IIRC,
which would make using it as an X server excruciating, even if there's
appropriate software. (I know there are X server packages for PPC-based
Macs, but I don't know about 680x0-based ones.)

Subject: PCI Sound card with MIDI?
Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 14:01:07 -0800
Hi,
I'm looking for a sound card for linux that:
a) Is PCI (I'm sick of using isapnp)
b) Can be statically linked into the kernel (I'm sick of modules)
c) Doesn't require ALSA, 4Front, Timidity, etc. in order to work
d) Has onboard MIDI chip and /dev/sequencer support. (This is where most
sound cards under linux are lacking).
I have been using the SB AWE64, which works great, but is an ISA card. I
want to go all PCI if I can.
I know that the support for the SB Live is (slowly) coming around, but
mostly by ALSA and opensource.creative.com. But I would prefer something
that is natively supported in the kernel.
Has anyone had any luck with PCI versions of the ESS chips (Solo, Maestro,
etc)? Especially the MIDI part?
Regards,
Dan Gill
