In this range, you can build a very good machine
with 128MB ram, 6G of hard drive, and above 300MHz
processor. See

(I will appreciate any comments about that site.)

Right, to the problems...I am a complete newbie. I have never used Linux
before but I have experience of Solaris (only using not configuring). I have
an OPTi 16 PnP soundcard (82C931 chipset, I think) and a Texas Instruments
56k V90 internal modem. Neither of these devices work with Linux. I have
read all the information I can find and none of it was any help (to be frank
I couldn't understand some of them). Any one who can help me please mail me.
Do not write to the newsgroup. please mail me personally. Please make your
suggestions clear and understandable.

Thanks

Hi Guys, I got my LapTop a week ago it's 14.1" Active Matrix screen, and I
found a dead pixel on the upper right hand side. The question is:

This laptop is still under the 30 day return policy, and I would like to
know if it's worth it to return it, and ask for another one, or is it true
that the standard is 3 or 4 dead pixels in a square inch before it's
considered bad?

A co-worker told me that if I should feel lucky for having only one dead
pixel, because chances are that there will be more than one dead pixel if I
exchange the laptop or the screen.

I guess the important question is, WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF GETTING A LAPTOP
THAT IS DEAD PIXEL FREE?

Thank you very much

the TDK Global Networker 3410 is listed in /etc/pcmcia/config in my
RedHat 5.2 distribution, implying there is support out there for your
card....don't know if it's recent, so you might want to check what's

necessary.

Only one?

The InfoWorld Gripe Line columnist, Ed Foster, had a big thing about this
early last year. Some kid saved his quarters for six years or something,
and his dad got all bent out of shape because there were two dead pixels on

Help

I am having problems getting my sound card to work. I am new to Linux so I

Here goes
System
AMD K6-233
Pcchipps 557 mb with on board sound (disabled and confermed disabled)
Cirrus logic 5446 2 mg
Wd hd 1.6 g
24 X cd rom
64 mg ram
Kingston KNE-40 network card
and of 3.5 floppy
Sound blaser 16 model CT2230
According to Creative this sound card is not pnp but the only jumper for
config is for the port addy witch I have set to 220 and useing a diagonstic
program i found the irq and dma and cheecked for conflicts and found none
I have RedHat ver 5.1 installed with 2.0.35 kernel
The problem is the sound config utility will allow me to set this but when
it goes to play the test sample it gives me an error that "an error was
encounterd running the modprobe program"
I have also ran the pnpdump utility and it reports back no pnp cards in the
system.
I had read that cirtian sb16 were inconpatable with Linux is this one of
them ???? Or i just havent dug deep enough ???

It depends upon your X-server. The commercial x-servers, can sometimes use 4
cards at the same time. But often you have to buy speciial cards wich no how
to share interrupts. Like a Matrox millenium. 2 different cards is with some
servers also possible aslong as they don't conflict with each other.

If your kernel or modules support msdos or vfat filesystems
you should be able to simply mount your dos partition in
linux and access the files directly. If you're using long
filenames (eg Win9x's vfat and/or FAT32 filesystems) you
should mount the partition using the vfat option otherwise
you'll only see the truncated 8.3 filenames.

I don't know if it is possible for Windows to see your ext2
partitions, though.

Maybe you could ask chromatic research (origin of MPACT) for

Overall i'd say: If it's only one i wouldn't bother. 3 to 4 per

I've been having a similar problem with my modem using RH 5.1. Every time I
start minicom, it hangs on me. I also have a PnP modem, but I disabled PnP
support in the BIOS, so the settings should remain constant. I believe I
also configured my serial port correctly, using the settings I found in the
Win95 Control Panel.

I looked at the RH web site, and I found that the version of minicom (1.81)
included with RH 5.1 has a bug. This bug should not affect basic modem
operation, but I downloaded minicom 1.82 just to be safe. Even 1.82 is
hanging on me, just in a different way. I can now exit minicom using Ctrl-A
X, where I used to have to kill minicom when I used 1.81.

I don't know if this is much help, but at least you're not the only one
having this problem.

Jonathan;

As was just pointed out you need SCSI support for the ZIP drives. If its a
Zip Plus you need the imm module. One thing to look out for is that SCSI
support has to be loaded first, if it is a module, before loading the Zip
Module. I have progressed to the 2.2.1 kernel, which I've just installed
onto a laptop and have managed to get the Zip to work on the second rebuild
of my kernel. Its very easy to miss something ;).

Now I have to sit down with the PCMCIA docs and see if I can figure out what
needs to be done to get that to work.
