You know, I was just scanning the newsgroups because I was about to post
about this. My computer does the same thing but upon examining the ring
buffer (w/ dmesg) I get the message:

VFS: Disk change detected on device ide0(3,64)
ATAPI device hdb:
Error: Not ready -- (Sense key=0x02)

repeating over and over. It turns out that if I put a data CD in my CD-RW
drive even w/o mounting, the problem goes away. It is quite annoying. I
have noticed it in Gnome but have not investigaed much further. My CD-RW
is the primary slave w/ my windows hd as primary master and my linux hd as
secondary master and a regular cdrom on sec slave. I only notice this
phenomenon on my CD-RW drive and only after I start X (I've only tried
Gnome). I thought I had the drive/driver set up incorrectly (maybe I do)
so if anyone has any fixes, I'd appreciate it.

One of my machines at work has a Trio 3D. There is a note in the XFree86
documentation about this card. Support is new for this card and does not
support all resolutions and the dot clocks are a little funny. XFree86
documentation has some lines to add to the config file. I have it working
640x480 256 colors and 800x600 16 bit color and 1024x768 24 bit color and
1152x864 16 bit color but 1024x768 16 bit color won't work. Support for this
card is a little flaky but it is possible to get it to work at several
different resolutions.

A gateway is the node in the network chain that is further up than you, which
you send data to and it then tries to route.

for example, on my lan i have four boxes: a linux box, two win98 boxes, and a
win98 laptop. the linux box has two interfaces; eth0 to the lan and eth1 to the
internet. the linux box gives addresses & information via dhcpd on eth0. from
those settings the win98 boxes are told to use the linux box as their gateway.

when a win98 box on the lan sends a packet to the internet, it sends the packet
to the linux box. the linux box then looks at its ipchains rulesets and decides
what to do with the packet. if the packet is accepted, the linux box looks at
its routing tables and decides where to send it. the packet is destined for the
world, so it sends the packet out on eth1, to the linux box's gateway.

perhaps a better definition than my previous one is that a gateway is a node
connecting two networks...?...

hope this helps.

My ~/.xawtv has:

which allows xawtv to control the sound. 'line' may have to be something
else for you, experiment with xmixer to figure it out.

Hi!

I just bought an new sony crx120e rewritable drive, and normally it uses dma. I tried
the normal ide drivers (ali 15x3 chip, kernel 2.3.x, 2.2.12 patched) and the drive
works, but for burning you need the scsi emul, but when I try to mount the drive I get
this after a timeout:

so dma is disabled, until I remove scsi emul.

anyone got dma and scsi emul working? and what do I do wrong?
can I safely burn cd's without this feature?

Thanks,
  John

Just a follow-up if anyone cares.
Now I'm able to run umda mode 2 by replacing the 80 pin cable
with the conventional 40 pin cable, thus forcing the mobo to run
lower mode than umda 4. It's just dumb for the kernel to run
the slowest (and possibly safest) mode when it can't handle
the fast hardware (ie. mobo and drive). why not just run the
second fastest mode ?

Anyway, I'll try Hedrick's kernel patch later on. It might work.

Subject: Trouble with scsi 53c400 need help!
Date: 09 Mar 00 21:32

Hi all,

Sorry of my bad english, it isn't my language.

I have big trouble with my scanner-card for an HP Scanjet IIc.
The scsi controller card is an HP 309, Rev A, C11752-66500
with an ncr 53c400 chip without an a. It isn't a 53c400a!
It is the Card with memory mapped mode. I hav this jumpered
on the address 0xd4000. Other adresses i have probed and giv me
in all times the same errors.

The kernel is 2.2.14.

Have anjone an troubleshooting for my problem?

insmod g_NCR5380 give me an Device or resource busy.
the same i become with parameter
insmod g_NCR5380 ncr_53c400=1 ncr_irq=255

# insmod g_NCR5380 ncr_53c400=1 ncr_irq=255 ncr_addr=0xd4000
With the address parameter I become an Segmentation fault
on all probed addresses (c0000,c4000,... D4000,D8000).

I have probed many kernel configurations with the generic driver
g_NCR5380 an do compiled new.

I have get all hardware oudside of my computer that i not needed
to boot. I have read all info unter /usr/doc/* /usr/src/* an
the same that i found with dejanws.

It is no free interrupt in my system to get another controller inside.
I need someone without interrupt or with interruptsharing to another card.

What can i do to run my scanner under linux with this damned
controller?

thanks
Martin

So, so you have the kernel source installed or not? You can't compile
a driver without the kernel headers.

: I'll take another guess that since you've never seen the modconf menu,
: it must be unique to Corel Linux.

Quite possibly. What does it do? (I was about to say "offer", but
then I realized that I wouldn't be interested in the interface
aspect ...).

Who says so? I am not denying it. I have no proof tha problems do or don't
exist, but from my experience, its not the case, and in fact, as I said, I
have experienced more problems with the BX chipset.

SO what should I believe, my own experience that I know to be true, or
should I believe the unsubtantiated words of another. I am sorry, but its
problems that I have just not seen (be it work or home) if problems do exist
then perhaps its more carbon based than silicon? I know all the professonals
I deal with have no problems.

why, you are the one that produced the Deja information as some kind of
evidence. What was it, oh here it is, regarding a search for bus master
problems;

"
Anyone can go to www.deja.com and do a USENET power search on all: via
busmaster problem, Feb 20 2000, 100 per page. There are 75 returns.
Start reading.

Do a USENET power search on all: intel busmaster problem, Feb 20 2000, 100
per page. There are 34 returns. Considering that Intel outsells VIA
~2:1........
"

I Acknowledged the point you make that intel outsells VIA 2:1, but do you
deny, using your own evidence , that there is proof of problems with intel
bus mastering?, remember, 34 returns...
